Firefighting is a career that can make you feel proud and accomplished, and it is a career in which I have a lot of respect for. In order to be a firefighter you must be in shape, prepared, experienced, and ready to deal with your job emotionally as well as physically. I chose to be a firefighter because I want to be able to help others and make them feel safe to live in their communities. After visiting some actual fire departments, I realized as a firefighter you certainly have a lot to be proud of. While going through training, I began to realize this is a career that is can be emotionally overwhelming. You must be able to cope with mental stress, and stay prepared at all times. Just the fact that you don’t know what you are going to encounter throughout one day can be stressful. Knowing this you must learn how to deal with your emotions, whether it’s through group therapy or just relaxing after work. People are going to depend on you when they’re in a dangerous situation and you must be strong and help them when they are in need. To help others you must also be physically and menta...

Why do I want to be an area officer? While these words are not exactly the same as previous essay prompts I have been given, they all share the same idea; “Why do I want to be a leader”? Looking back at my old responses they are all focused on similar concepts; I wanted to be a leader because of the friendships, traveling and meeting new people, building better leadership skills, learning how to better communicate with people, and acquiring life skills, such as patience, teamwork, organization, and dedication. While all of these things have some importance, they should never be the reason someone wants to be a leader. When I wrote these I thinking about how to better myself, rather than how to help others. I was thinking selfishly. At the time I didn’t know what it truly meant to be a leader, to be willing to sacrifice myself for others. Even while I am still young and have much to learn, I finally understand why I want to be a leader and what a true leader should look like. I would like the opportunity to serve as a 2014-2015 Area Officer, so that I can better serve the FFA, my fellow members, and ultimately my world.
Finding your calling in life can be one of the hardest things to do, for some it is obvious from a young age on what you want to do. For example, my mom has gone on a spree of jobs in her life and she has only recently found something that she actually wants to do. My dad on the other hand knew from a young age what he wanted to do, he liked to tinker and straight after he got out of highschool he knew that he wanted to be a mechanic, and he has stuck with that career path for more than 30 years now. I am currently undecided on what I want to do for the rest of my life, however one of the careers that I am looking at is a law enforcement officer.
Firefighters are more than friends. You can't fight fires with friends. To fight fires you need a brotherhood. The men and women of the fire service across the globe consider each other family, this is one of the grand traditions of the fire department. Firefighters are constantly looking out for one another, thinking about the things they do and how it may affect the other’s lives and safety. Life safety is of the highest priority in the business of fire rescue. To achieve a safety standard there are many tasks that fire personnel are expected to carry out, for both a personal and a team related purpose. One of these tasks is the daily inspection of the fire apparatus upon arrival to the fire station. This task is with most certainty the most essential process that fire personnel are responsible for in order to get through the shift safely and efficiently.

“Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters” (Brillstein & Reitman, 1984). In 1984, a very popular comedy movie “Ghostbusters” hit the big screen and this one quote from the movie seemed to stick in everyone’s head. The question that seems to be posed when there is a crisis or emergency situation today would be “Who you gonna call? The fire department”. In today’s society fire departments have become the “catch-all” for every kind of emergency. Don’t you agree? Fire is still a big part of the fire service, “in 2015, every twenty-three seconds a fire department was responding to a fire” (NFPA (Ed.). , 2015). However, the fire service has evolved from just “putting the wet stuff on the red stuff” mentality to a profession
Having spoken to Officer Brietzke at length about law enforcement, I am pretty sure that is the direction I will go with my career is firefighting, not law enforcement. Many aspects of both careers are similar, and my education so far has been in Emergency Management which can go both ways. For instance, I totally understand the adrenaline rush from dealing with an emergency and helping people because that is the same thing in the fire department. I have changed my main firehouse because the one closest to my home does not receive many fire calls. I went searching for the action, which I have found where I am now. Also, the perseverance he mentioned is exactly the same for career firefighters. I have been going through the hiring process

In my history class we did a project called dream-a-dream. In this project we had to type a couple of paragraphs about what we wanted to be in the future and we had to find pictures in magazines . I chose a firefighter or a professional baseball player. I chose firefighter because I get to save people from fires and maybe their house too, also I heard that firefighters get paid a lot. I chose to be a baseball player because I have been playing this sport for nine years and I am actually really good at the sport. My favorite position to play is pitcher because all of the attention is on me. The teacher told us to type about what you wanted to be in the future, find some pictures on what you want to be, and have it done with in 2 weeks. The expectation was to have it done neatly and when he said it was due. This assignment relates to an alien project I did in science. It relates only because it was a project. The point of this assignment was to know what you want to be in the future. For an A on the assignment you had to finish it on time, and do it neatly.
What should we do in life? That always seems to be the question. Life is not guaranteed to be easy, never turning out the exact way that we want it to. A lot of people work hard to achieve their dreams of making a massive amount of money and having more than a seven percent return on their 401k plan. Truth is, life is not about the amount of money that we have saved up, it is about what we do to make a difference and how we will make our lifetime worth it. Something that people should set into place is a plan for their future. A plan that would help not only directs their path in life, but the paths of those around them too.
It requires a great deal of strength, not only physically but emotionally as well. There is a great deal of physical work involved, such as lifting patients and equipment. You are on your feet most of of the day, and there is little patience for idle hands. Patients will often require much patience, and excellent people skills are a must. There will also be situations that will pull on the heart strings, however, we are there to do a job, and to do it to the greatest of our ability. Yes, I was aware of most of these requirements, but I don’t believe that I understood them to the fullest detail, and I probably won’t, unless I experience them first-hand. Fortunately, now, I have been educated on expecting such circumstances, and will be better equipped to handle them when such situations
