When growing up, it seemed the one subject that I dreaded the most was English. I hated to read because books assigned for book reports always seemed boring to me, therefore giving me no real motivation to understand the content and write a good report, thus making writing more of chore than a learning experience. Of course, when considering my return to school, the thought of having to research and write countless essays became a big fear of mine. However, after much deliberation, I realized that I possessed one crucial tool that I did not have all those years ago in high school: motivation. So, the question is, “Why do I want to improve my writing skills?”.

writing ability to their overall communication skills (Robar, 1998). As I am sure most of my fellow classmates would agree, the main reason people go back to school after so many years is to better themselves through their careers. Employers feel that even though a potential candidate for advancement may be very knowledgeable of their job, the ability to write and relay information to others is a key necessity, especially in upper management positions. This important link of communication is extremely significant in not only demonstrating a person’s ability to convey information, but also in signifying the self confidence required of managers and company leaders. A key hurdle for many people becoming good writers is their writing apprehension or writing anxiety.
In a 2013 article written by Deanna Mascle, it is stated that there are 4 different sources to writing apprehension (Mascle, 2013). The first source is Performance, or Mastery experience, which is described as “active engagement in the art of writing” (Mascle, 2013, p. 220) and is remedied by writing with purpose and not just necessity, as in the essays we will write for this and future courses. Vicarious experience and Social Persuasion are described as comparing ones writing to their peers for comparison, as well as building confidence from others feedback, as in our Discussion assignments. Finally, there is Physiological or Affective State, which is determined by a person’s feelings or emotions affecting their writing apprehension. One of the ways to address this source can be by relieving stress through writing down these feelings and anxieties in a journal, which will also be implemented in this course. I feel these methods can also be beneficial not only to adult learners, but also learners at the high school
level. As mentioned earlier in this essay, I dreaded the task of writing when I was in high school and unfortunately, I see that my son is probably following that same path. A 2017 study by Camacho and Alves states that many children do not possess strong writing skills, despite its importance today. This study found that children with positive reinforcement and encouragement from their parents developed far better writing skills than ones that did not and solely relied on the teacher. By demonstrating how important these skills are, not only in school but in life in general, I hope to inspire him to concentrate more on developing his own writing. I feel this can also be accomplished by using a positive attitude towards my assignments to better demonstrate the writing is not a burden and should not be approached as such. The fact that I never finished college when I was younger has always stuck in the back of my mind. Like any journey in life, the one that I have chosen to venture by returning to school will have its ups and downs. Thus far, the journey has been very fulfilling as I feel I have already learned a tremendous amount in a very short time. But I feel that the rewards at the end of it all will be worth the anxiety and sleepless nights that are to come. But the reward of advancement in my company and providing a better life for my family or inspiring my son to focus more on his own studies for his own future are not what I look most forward to. The reward of being able to say at the end of it all that I did it and having the confidence that comes with being a good writer is what I am mostly focused on.
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
I have studied English since I was a grade seven, but the curriculum in my middle school and high school years, mainly focuses on reading and speaking components of language skills, with a little focus on writing. As a result, I never felt confident with any piece that I was asked to write. Writing has been a hurdle for me to succeed in college since most of the courses in college requires one or the other way writing skill. Consequently, I have decided to work on my writing skills, and have started working on it; even before, I started taking this English 101 class. I used to use a various educational material which I thought might help me to meet my writing goal. Some of the materials which I was using includes: TOEFL educational materials, You Tube resources, and various novels. All of these resources have helped me to polish my writing skills. Furthermore, after I started taking this class, I have learned to enjoy writing. I have made it a point to communicate my own thoughts and feelings as opposed to simply summarize the thoughts of famous writers and authors before me. This class builds up my confidence in my own writing and for that I am highly appreciative.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. This competence is influential to society because it is very useful as a tool for cognitive thinking, self-expression, and bountiful forms of creativity.
