There is an innumerable amount of reasons why I am choosing environmental science as my major as I enter my freshman year of college. As long as I can recall, I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of nature, while learning new factors of the ecosystems. I was not always certain of what I wanted my career to be, but I was sure I wanted to help others. I strongly believe that studying environmental science at Niagara University will prepare me to not only help communities, animals, and the ecosystem, but also allow me to discover new information while enjoying and protecting the beautiful environment in which Earth provides.

The University of Miami is a top ranked private university in the United States, and while very diverse, it was not an easy task to find a student who fit the profile of a first generation college student whose parents were born and raised in the United States. After a long search, I came across a girl I’ll call Sarah. Sarah is attending the University of Miami on a scholarship to run on the schools Division I girls cross country and track team. Sarah attended high school in a large suburb just outside of Chicago, Illinois where she ran cross country and track before being recruited to UM. As a member of the university’s environmental club called the “Green Team,” Sarah has used her passion for a clean environment to inspire her to study environmental engineering while here in her first year of studies. I was recently accepted into the Exploratory Studies college at NC State, and am beyond excited to hopefully continue my academic career at NC State University. Although I am currently undecided on my major, I've shown the most interest in math and science related subjects, and hope to pursue similar avenues of study at State through the Exploratory Studies program. I am interested in exploring different career paths that I may have not yet considered, and believe that this program will provide me with the resources necessary to truly discover what I want to do for the rest of my life. Although I currently do not have any specific career objectives, I am confident that I will leave NC State prepared to build a successful career, regardless of my eventual major. I am excited at how much NC State and the Exploratory Studies college has to offer, and hope to eventually graduate with the experience and knowledge to begin a professional career.
Ever since I was a little kid I loved the performing arts and I never thought that I would eventually fall in love with science . After an intense and challenging year of Chemistry my sophomore year, I was hesitant and nervous in signing up for my junior year science class. Toward the end of my sophomore year my chemistry teacher, Mr. Bowditch, told me he thought I would do well in Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I was in a state of disbelief because I was struggling trying to get a C in Chemistry and I was thinking how was I supposed to take AP Environmental Science class. After a conversation with my parents, they had persuaded me to sign up and we agreed if i didn't like it or it was too hard I would be able to drop the class.
Similarly, I will continue my explorations outside of the classroom to enrich the quality of my time at college as well as those around me. Between classes, I see myself with new friends, but it is hard to predict what I will be up to. Investigating the area is definitely one of the first things I would do if I attend Boulder. Besides this, I will participate in clubs on campus and volunteer to the community. These are two factors of my life that I intend to carry with me in college because they have been a crucial part in my personal development, and I find it my responsibility to remain devoted to the rest of the world. Now back to the academic side, I chose to major in chemical engineering so that I can conduct research and apply my knowledge in a way that will benefit society and the planet. With this as my primary career goal, I do not take the decision of a college lightly, for it feels as if my life has prepared me for this calling. When I decided to attend Northern Arizona University and be a Lumberjack, it was initially due to its reputation as the best teachers college in Arizona, but ironically, I have never been an education major, or taken any education courses. Education was an overcrowded field, so I entertained the idea of being a Computer Science major. Ha! That lasted less than a month before I knew that was going to fail.
My purpose and goals in attending college is to make something of my life. It is a good thing. No one wants to be a nobody. But sometimes it takes time in order for one to realize this. & nbsp; Upon graduation from high school, I, like the majority of others high school graduates, had no clue what direction my life was heading or even what I wanted to become.

Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. I am attending college for several different reasons. One reason is to further my education. I hate feeling like I don’t know something, I like being the person everyone comes to for information. Also, because I want to be better prepared for my major, I want to be better then the next person with the job credentials. I want to major in Social Work and Criminology. I dream to be a counselor or an clinical service social worker. I want to help people who need someone there for them someone who can guide them or even just talk too. I feel in some type of way I am setting an example for my parents and my brother that they too can go back to school. Lastly is simply because I love school. I love knowing more and more each day. As it is commonly stated, an environmentally active student from the University of Connecticut-Stamford comments, “The first step toward solving a problem is admitting there is one” (Lanslots). In the area of environmental awareness, the solution must be executed on both an individual and a corporate level. Aldo Leopold states, “A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke he is writing his signature on the face of the land” (73). Similarly we must realize that every action we take has an intended or unintended consequence upon our earth. Each step towards the conservation effort adds a signature to the plea to save our earth. As an up and coming chemistry scholar, it is important to raise awareness of the state of our environment and to recognize the strategies that can be taken as a member of a university, a citizen of the United States, and a future member of the corporate world to ensure a better environment and maintain resources for the future generations to live in this land.
I often find myself pondering how we can coexist with the environment. Because of the amount of advancement we have had as a society, there is no way we could return to the caveman days and live off the land. So we must find a way for our new society to fit in with the rest of the world. This is the reason I decided to become an environmental engineer. I chose AP Environmental as my favorite school subject because it has opened my eyes to how our planet is being mistreated, but it also shows us how to nourish it back to health. He would have the class participate many times in class and would make sure we went on various field trips to broaden our perspective on the class. I do not know what they do in criminal justice but do enjoy watching “48 Hours” it is a TV show about detectives solving homicides. To me it is very interesting to see how they solve these murders with little evidence or nothing. I know there are some murders that can go unsolved for years.
