“I wanted to escape Small Town U.S.A. To dismiss the boundaries, to explore. My life experience came from watching movies, TV, and reading books and magazines. When your culture comes from watching TV everyday, you're bombarded with images of things that seem cool, places that seem interesting, people who have jobs and careers and opportunities” (Trent Reznor). The previous quote describes what television means to so many Americans. In a culture like ours, mostly every way we communicate is through cell phones, computers, tablets, and radios. One interesting way is the television. The following paragraphs describe the positive and negative effects of the technology known as television on our past and present.
A man named Paul Gottlieb Nipkow
was a student in a German university. In 1884, he patented the idea of a electromechanical television system. It included a rotating scanning disk with thirty holes, called a Nipkow disk (Bird 1). Almost forty years later, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird created an image with detail to make out a human face (Bird 2). This was a huge step in the television world. In 1928, General Electric sold an experimental electro-mechanical television station. It was called the W2XB. A thirteen inch tall Felix the Cat was one of the first broadcasted images. Later that year, the television receiver was created. Then on September 11th of that year, the first live TV broadcast was produced (Bird 2). With those few years in the beginning completed, the most productive were yet to come. The Golden Age of the television was between the years 1948 and 1960 (Bird 3). According to Bird, those twelve years were filled with many shows we call "classics" now. Those include I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke. But for the TV people, the shows known as "dramatic anthology programs" are the best. Westinghouse Studio One and Kraft Television Theatre (Bird 3). The reason so many purple in the world today love watching TV on the couch with a bag of chips is because of those years. After so many years of creating new things for the television, like recorders, VCR's, DVD's, soaps, and sitcoms, the world has been forever changed. With just the touch of a button (on the remote), you can watch up to 1,000 channels. Most televisions come in high definition, so it seems as though you are actually there. There are so many ways that the television has helped the world. Those ways include: mass media broadcasts for weather or crime, the latest sports games in your own living room, your favorite romantic comedy on the movie channel, and just plain funny shows. There are few negative aspects to the television. Those include: false media broadcasts, inappropriate movie scenes for young eyes to see, and negative encouragements for all ages. Other than those, the television is a very important aspect to life and a fulfillment for the needs of people who do not enjoy the outdoors. The information above described why the television is one of the best ideas in technology. For as long as anyone in this generation can remember, it is one of the only ways to get mass media broadcasts. Also, it is the only way to watch Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family every Tuesday night at eight.
Presently 98% of the households in the United States have one or more televisions in them. What once was regarded as a luxury item has become a staple appliance of the American household. Gone are the days of the three channel black and white programming of the early years; that has been replaced by digital flat screen televisions connected to satellite programming capable of receiving thousands of channels from around the world. Although televisions and television programming today differ from those of the telescreens in Orwell’s 1984, we are beginning to realize that the effects of television viewing may be the same as those of the telescreens.
Television technology has been a controversial issue since its debut in the early 1940s. In order to fully understand any controversial issue, one must be presented with both the pro and the con sides of the issue. One must understand and be able to argue both sides of the issue in order to become a successful and well-educated person. Being a member of the pro-technological society, one is well educated on the pro side of this issue. That is, the positive effects that television technology has on society: Television's entertainment value, the ability to get "up to the minute" news coverage from around the world, and the uses of television as an educational tool. In order to understand the con side of this issue, one can look at the work Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, by Jerry Mander. This work provides four strong arguments against the television technology and gives reasons why the technology should be eradicated. Through the study of this work, one can become better equipped to argue the con side of the issue, thus becoming a well-educated member of society, conscious of the effects that television has on him/her.
Television is the most popular electronic appliance in the world. Being the most popular electronic appliance, it has had great impacts to many individuals in society. Television viewing comes with a myriad of positive effects of television. However, it has a number of negative effects especially in children that are of concern to society. Television viewing can have effects on people’s behavior. It also has a number of impacts in the fields of education, morals and health.
I’ve finally made it. When you first land here the immediate difference is all around you whizzing around you creating a sense of life. It 's a sense that you rarely have in a small town it 's bigger I can’t quite obtain a hold of it. It moves fast all through the night and during the day. It peaks in all of my senses to create a brand new sense of the life of the city.
Television is one of the greatest inventions to ever be created, or is it? As a child I always thought television was great. Television was amusing and brought entertainment to the comfort of households. Although, over the years, I’ve learned that television does more harm than good to people’s lives. Television teaches young children bad habits and family values are weakened by peoples’ interest in television.
The television is an invention that without a doubt changed the world. Televisions have been available for the public to own since the early ‘40s. Like every invention the Television’s popularity started off slow. At the end of World War Two about 8,000 households owned a television. At this point in time televisions were all black and white, small, and had no more than a few channels to choose from. The programming consisted of entertainment and there was little focus on news. One of the main reasons for this was that with the technology they were not able to broadcast up to date news programs.
Television. Most Americans today cannot imagine life without it. It is how we relax, laugh, learn, and stay up to date on current events. The inventors of television may not have realized the impact of combining sound with moving pictures. For the first time in the history of the world we were and are able to peek into the lives of people we will never meet and visit places we will never go. It has even changed the way we communicate with each other in our everyday lives! Who has not heard or used the phrase coined by the sitcom, Seinfield, “…not that there’s anything wrong with that….”? This analysis will first examine the origins of television and the evolution of television technology throughout the years. Next, it will examine the current trends within the industry, and how our government has shaped these trends, the companies that are involved in the industry, and finally, the future of television in the new sub-age of the Information Age, the Digital Age.
For the last couple of centuries each generation had their won media that affects their thinking. Books, newspapers and magazines were the first type of media from the late 15th century. Magnetic tapes, cassettes and CDs followed that in the late 19th century. Then, people had the Cinema, the radio and finally we end up with the Television from the 50’s until this moment. Television had it all. This means that TV is producing all of the kinds of media that were in the form of CDs, gramophone records and cassettes etc. Back in the old days, the TV was just for the purpose of entertainment and news without any involvement in any ideologies. Furthermore, TV nowadays is the main source of societies’ entertainment and education sometimes. Nonetheless, with capitalism everything has changed. The most important change was the way that enterprises and governments lead it. Suddenly, huge campaigns started to emerge more than TV’s programs. A campaign could be for products or government issues to draw the public minds to it. Thus, of course, more and more people starts realizing that TV is not the only way to enhance their lives. Thus, nowadays, watching Television is not beneficial for the long time run because it is providing its audiences mostly with everything that would change nothing or mislead their lives.
Like many modern Americans I prefer to spend my free time just relaxing and catching up on my favorite television shows, until the day I wondered to myself, does watching too much television have a negative effect on people? After finding many excellent sources I have learned that watching excess amounts of television has a number of negative effects that I will discuss. Television has been proven to have negative effects on people’s physical health, intelligence and physiologic health. I will also discuss the repercussions of television in productivity and in modern social lives.
Television, called TV for short, is found in most of the homes across America and most people consider it a necessity for their life. It was made popular in the ‘50 and without doubt, the television has had an incredible influence on the lives of Americans and on our culture as a whole. It has been a fixture in most homes since it’s debut, and according to In Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Psychology, it is said that that 90 per cent of homes in “many western societies” have it (In Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Psychology). It has connected our nation and the world unlike most other inventions before it.
Television is a very important part of today’s society. Without the invention of television, the world would be without many wonders, such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Here Comes Honey BooBoo, and Jersey Shore. More importantly, daily news, breaking updates, mass information, and quality programming would unaccessible to thousands, if not millions, of people. Television has changed the way information is spread and changed the way the world experiences entertainment. Although much has changed throughout the history of the television, the main point has stayed the same. Whether a person’s first experience with a TV was a small black and white box with very few channels or an LCD or Plasma flat screen with thousands of channels, it has impacted the lives of millions all over the developed world and especially in the United States. With all the advances and changes made to the original television design, it is obvious that the first one had enough of a societal and technological impact to last for a long time.
In the beginning television was a luxury. Many use to think watching television was something to prepare for. Watching television was more like an event. People who had television in their home invited others over to enjoy the television with them. They also wanted to show off that they could afford a television set. Back in the day television was a place for a family to spend time together and bond around the television set and dinner, work, and school. Television as a whole: sparks socialization, influences how we cook and eat, shapes and mirrors our values, can make us more violent, increasing obesity, have an effect on a marriage and family, destroy a body image, increases acceptance of the Gay community, and may increase or decline quality time depending on the situation.
In present day’s technologically advanced society, Television plays a major role in people’s lives. It not only provides entertainment and relaxation but also establishes a link between us and the rest of the World. Television also keeps us aware of news and of essential information such as weather updates. But, according to the A.C. Nielsen Co, the total amount of Television watched annually in America reaches an astounding amount of 250 billion hours with only 32% of it being informational. Considering the detrimental effects of Television, which has outnumbered its benefits, I assertively agree that Television has a bad influence on people and you will too after finishing this essay.
Television and technology has grown tremendously over the years; therefore, the TV models have advanced over the years. John L. Baird was the first person to invent television in September 7, 1927. He was a famous scientist of Scotland; he demonstrated his invention at the Royal Institute of Great Britain in 1926. It was not fully developed till the late 1940s. The invention of TV made an enormous effect on many Americans. Right after television was invented not many Americans had one because they were pricy and they couldn’t afford one. The numbers of TVs sold, went up in 1929, Bard sold several hundred TVs because only the wealthy could afford one. 98 % of U.S homes had one per house and spent an average of more than seven hours a day, in the late 1990s. The invention of television can be a benefit or harm to Americans because there’s some good educational shows and some shows that are not good. For instance, Discovery, History, Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) channels are some good educational shows because it helps us understand and have knowledge of the World. However, there are some shows that are not good for kids and adults are: The Jersey Shore, 16&Pregant, The Real World, Jesses and Hannah Montanna. Several of shows have a lot of violence and affects young kids the most. Lawrence mentions, “Television can affect learning and school performance if it cuts into the time kids need for activities crucial to healthy mental and physical development.” TV can be an advantage and disadvantage because it is distraction, learning tool, Economic Advantage.
Improvement in technologies has an impact on human lives. The consequence of television has improved nowadays. Television has both the negative and positive impacts. The negative consequences are more when compared to positive. Watching television for prolonged time causes many impacts on the human and their health. It has a significant impact on young people than adults because they are the people who watch TV more. Commentator of television state that TV grabs much of our free time hence there won’t be time for other activities like reading, exercising, family conversations, going out with friends, etc. Channels and technologies have increased in greater level in the television. That affects the children and distracts
