My brother once told me, “If you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe then you’ll be successful.” We all want to impact or change the world one way or another, but some do not want it bad enough. Everyone wants success but it is easier to sit on the couch and watch TV or fall asleep than finish an assignment. The point is that in life there are a lot of things we think we want, but do not try hard enough due to comfort and ease. However, I am proud to be an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) student because we are pushed to the edge. IBDP eliminates those who cannot put up with the pressure or quantity of assignments. It has preoccupied me with anything but laziness. My goal is to become a happy, strong, independent woman who is able to achieve the IB Diploma, and major in Education or psychology in a prestigious university. The Programme has positively influenced my fellow classmates and me by providing the future of our community with a higher level education and caring young individuals. For example, the Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) project creates a better and more peaceful world through the voluntarily service of its candidates. A definitive part of my individuality is my level of intelligence. I’ve always been encouraged and driven to challenge my intellect through various opportunities in my community. Although my endeavors whether academic or artistic have provided both beneficial and detrimental outcomes in my life, I’ve been able to gain the greatest amount of esteem from my commitment to voluntary civic service. In the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program as a part of eligibility for diploma status, candidates are required to submit 200 CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) hours performing duties that meet the criteria for each category. At first I viewed the task as your stereo-typical student with disdain and contempt for the seemingly daunting tasks. However, I never expected to have gained a true introspect and regard from my experiences in service. The community should encourage continued community service from college students that receive scholarships and or some type of financial aid to volunteer, with the existing programs. This could increase the amount of people available to these after school and summer programs, while saving the city some money. This could prove to be a major step in continuing to improve the city and make it a desired place to live and prosper.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
Most people throughout the world strive for success in each task they take on, and along with this, many reasons contribute to why they succeed or not. If a person does not succeed, they may automatically blame themselves because of their level of strength. Others may blame themselves for not having enough knowledge about what they are trying to succeed at. The real reason that people may not succeed, however, is their lack of determination and happiness throughout his/her journey that is demonstrated in the book Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell.
I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
My parents would often tell me, “We want you to be success.” They mean “successful,” but by striving to become a structural engineer, I strive not just to become successful but become a success. In their love for family, my parents have spent time and energy into unlocking the potential they saw in me. I would like to inspire people by building structures no one believed was possible and, by doing so, unlock the potential in others.

By capitalizing on your strengths, you shift your focus on what makes you good at a certain skill and can use these to further yourself in success. Following this lesson, the third idea presented introduces the idea that “It’s not about you.” When you first think about this, it appears contradictory. If we focus on making our own plan and mastering our strengths to achieve success, shouldn’t success be for an individual? While the notion does appear odd, the idea becomes more clear once explained. Your purpose on the Earth is to make a difference and to better the people around you. We achieve success by improving the chance of opportunity to others. While it first appears as though success is individual, it actually dives deeper. The fourth lesson presented “persistence trumps talent” is essential for college students. We might not be as good at our passions as another individual in our field who is born with the talent. However, through persistence, we achieve success because we focus more on what we want to do to make ourselves successful. The fifth idea is
One way to ensure a civically engaged population is to nurture and promote amongst youth and teenagers the value of participating in one’s community, with the hope that involvement will continue into adulthood. Most school districts in Arizona do not require students to volunteer as a graduation requirement. Those that do, necessitate a number of hours to be completed and logged individually; for example, Deer Valley Unified School District in Maricopa County requires eight hours of volunteering during a student’s senior year. Of course any opportunity for one to help society should be applauded – however, this particular process negates cooperative long-term attachment to a beneficial project and does not incorporate knowledge learned in class, or apply meaning in a real-life context. The implementation of Service-learning programs into public school curriculum would uphold useful skills associated with community involvement and citizenship, as well as address problems in real settings rather than do repetitious tasks in seclusion.
A number of facilitators helped this department achieve these accomplishments. Mini-grants available on campus funded the faculty-partnership luncheon. In addition, four faculty members were awarded mini-grants to develop service-learning components in their courses. Departmental leadership has been a very strong advocate for service-learning. Recognition from discipline enhanced the image of this department on campus when the discipline newsletter highlighted the advances in service-learning in the department. The Office of Community Service-learning was helpful in training and assisting faculty interested in developing service-learning components in their courses. The campus generally recognizes service-learning and provides awards for those involved in service-learning. Two such campus awards have been given to members of the department studied.
As much as this class has grown together, every one of us has also grown as a unique individual. We have found our talents and interests. These interests have drawn us to different activities and in turn helped shape our lives. Some of us have excelled academically while others have helped improve Summer High School by participating in activities such as Link Crew or ASB. Some of us acted in plays while others shared their musical talents by singing in the choir or performing with our outstanding band. Many of us have preferred to be involved in community service with a group like KEY Club. In addition to these school activities, many of us have invested time in jobs and other community activities.
In addition, we are planning an upcoming backpacking retreat with our alumni leaders. We will continue to gather data and outcomes for future evaluations to document our work towards positive youth development. • For the upcoming school year, we will have the support of two UCLA MSW students who will assist with potential projects including: grant development, facilitating transfer workshops, strengthening community partnerships, coordinating monthly outings, and supporting case management needs. • After the success of our third annual resource fairs at Camp Gonzales and Camp Miller, the alumni program is looking forward to strengthening existing partnerships with community based organizations through quarterly networking
...ineering with first-class honours is my ultimate academic goal. After that, I am planning to further my study in PhD and make a research about the microstructure. It is easy to set the target but to achieve it need a lot of work and sacrifice the time and money. Strategic planning and full preparation needed to make the dream come to reality. I always tell myself that I have a potential to reach the target, and it is not impossible for me. To motivate me, I do read articles about the successful people as it may give me an inspiration and encourage me to be like them or even more.
This further fulfills the idea of being a “successful” person. Success should be measured by your own standards, not others. What makes your life successful and happy will not be the same for others, as theirs won’t be the dame for you. Being successful, and educated, all really revolve around how you view yourself, and what you choose to do and make with your life and the circumstances you’ve been given and have taken control of it.
