Now that the people all around the world connected to the internet, a lot of discourse community has sprung up online, in school, church or temples, and offices. For those who don't know much about speech community; it's where people who have common goals meet and uses their intelligence to achieve these aims. I would like to prove that I successfully joined the student council in my high school. Furthermore, I would like to explain how I joined the student council by using ethos, logos, and pathos. I always had a dream to be on the student council because a survey in Indian Times showed that my high school student council was of a paramount status. Even though the requirements to join the committee were comfortable, paradoxically, it was backbreaking. …show more content…
I had two awards in Math Olympiads, won the national basketball championship in 2014, runner-up in 100m and 200m race at a national level and winning the programming competition gave a boost on my credibility. I had finished my core java, ethical hacking, Website management, and CCNA which looks good on my resume. On several occasions, I have helped out my school regarding its website management. Also, I assisted the school in securing its server to any potential hack. Since I was ten years old, I saw my dad's method of managing his company. The key factor of any business is that you know people that acknowledge other people. I was friends with my school owners, the HOD of physics, and the head of secondary education, which helped me for a good recommendation for a seat on the student council. So it's settled, that I had maintained an alliance with all the luminaries of the school. However, I cannot be elected by them; I have to go through an
In the article “The Concept of Discourse Community” John Swales touches a few very important main ideas about what discourse community really is. I found it to be refreshing that he is able to express his feelings how he does in this article. Swales talks about discourse community and how our world today really isn 't that good at being apart of them. He discusses the six qualities or characteristics of being apart of a discourse community. You have to be active in communicating and wanting to be apart of that community and if you 're not that type of person than maybe it 's not your thing.
After attending Admitted Students Day in April, I knew Boston University, and more specifically Questrom, was the place for me. Several friendly, caring, and intelligent Dean’s Hosts came up to me and offered me tours, advice, or asked if I had any questions. The Dean’s Hosts made me feel extremely comfortable and gave me a better perspective on what Questrom is all about. Ever since that day, I knew that I wanted to be a Dean’s Host because the Dean’s Hosts helped me realize that this is where I belong, and I want to do the same for others. When I started college in September, I immediately asked about how to become a Dean’s Host because I want to be able to introduce others to everything Questrom has to offer, like the Dean’s Hosts did for me. Being a Dean’s Host is a great networking opportunity as Dean’s Hosts get to meet past alumni as well as distinguished guest speakers.
A community is to help and support each other to be successful. Everyone is involved in a certain community regardless of anything. A community I am commit with is CAMP from CSUMB which stands for College Assistance Migrant Program. My community is a federally funded program that assists first year freshmen who have a migrant background and students whose parents are seasonal farmworkers. CAMP assist their students with many useful services such as with a grant of up to 1,200 dollars. My community is very important to me for the reason they are guiding me to be successful while encouraging me to graduate from college. In my community we tend to communicate really often such as in the article "Learning to Serve" by Toni Mirabelli. As in the article, my community also communicates by using various literacy such as writing, reading , and speaking.
I have been in this school since kindergarden. I have been here long enough to see our school win the state title for football and I”ve also seen our school locked down. There is the good and the ugly in every story, and what side you choose to pick will make your life easier or a very long road to glory.
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...
There are countless types of discourse communities that I want to become a member of sometime in life. In the end, Chili’s follows under the six characteristics of Swales. If opening my own restaurant or becoming a server at a restaurant doesn’t work out for me I’d like to maybe try harder to join a nursing school or an organization that conducts community service. They’re both discourse communities if you look carefully at the way they communicate with one another.
As put by Jen Waak in regarding the human need for community, “By surrounding yourself with others working toward a similar goal, you’ll get...yourself a bit further than you would have done on your own,” (Waak). By being able to see and participate in these different communities centered around different objectives, the goal becomes easier to achieve and bonds the group into something more through trying to reach it. This new unit is called a discourse community and is defined by John Swales as containing six specific characteristics: having a common goal, showing intercommunication and using lexis, having participation within the group, being defined by genres of texts, and having members with areas of expertise for the community. When looking
Why I desire to be an Alpha man, a question that rolls around my thoughts since being invited to an informational. Out of all the organizations that exist from college fraternities to masonic lodges that cater to those of my cultural background the Alpha’s have always stood out as special, important and significant. In today’s society the romantic notion of college educated black man has almost no appeal unless affiliated with sports. Yet there is a storm brewing under the current of business, philosophy and science that will erupt and captivate the audience of this technological generation as it moves forward; and the vibrant and committed voices that represent Alpha Phi Alpha will have to ring true for the legacy to continue. This train that is approaching will require men of different experiences and stories to lead, shape and design new avenues to guide the
My academic performance excels my grade level. I enjoyed past experiences with speaking in front of others by participating in student council at Brookside Elementary in the 4th and 5th grades. I have had experience updating other students about things that are happening around campus. I will always be on time for our meetings and go to every one. I will always remember to bring my best ideas so that ASB can be a thing others will enjoy. I am a responsible, organized person that likes to contribute my ideas. Some things that I can bring to ASB are a positive outlook on ideas, creative and fun ideas, motivation, quality, leadership and hard work. To be in ASB, I know that you need to respect others and have good communication with my peers. I believe I excel in these two categories, and I will put forth my best effort to make MCMS a better school. I can contribute positive character traits as well as being an example to others. I would be very excited if I could be part of ASB next
My discourse community is the joplin crusaders I think this is a good discourse community because I think it pretty much gives the definition of what a discourse community is. Wikipedia defines a discourse community as a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. Linguist John Swales defined discourse communities as "groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. I think that the joplin crusaders have all of these characteristics to be a good discourse community to talk about in this essay.

Voluntary associations of conversation are needed in a community, but people do not participate enough in religious affiliations, fraternal organizations, or in communal gatherings (Driskel, Bateman, and Lyon). Communal conversation serves very important purposes: it engages the members of that community and gives members an opportunity to express ideas that could benefit that community. By coming together, residents can talk of ways to better the community and use those ways to unite the community as a whole. Open exchanges of ideas in a community contribute to the success of it by formulating ideas that can overcome challenges, decide how the society should be presented, and explore into both shared and different values of the
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups. Recently, I stepped up to be the leader of the fundraising committee for our ...
