A career or a job? I choose to have a career, something that I would wake up every morning with a smile on my face. I want to SERVE! Service above self is greater than any job. When people think of “serve” they think I want to be a social worker. Yes the role of a social worker is to serve but why do other professions think they don’t serve? Every career serves people in various ways, so if one says that those who serve people are the poor average ones they are wrong. I am pursuing my education to be a Speech Pathologist and Audiologist, this has been my dream ever since I worked with special adults with speech impairments. I want to make a difference around the world, to strengthen other speech pathologists to voluntarily travel and assist …show more content…
I want to help those who are willing and have the potential to be educated by providing financial assistance to students who are US-Citizen and non-US Citizens but struggling to pay for education. My obstacle for many scholarships has been "Are You a U.S Citizen?” I am aspiring to prevent other incoming students into the college from the frustration of eligibility as a result of the fact that, there are many talented and bright minds in the world and I do not want this college to lose out on them. How will I be able to accomplish my dream by just being a Speech Pathologist? Truth be told, I know it will not be an easy task. My goal is to put myself out there in the world, while in college the best place for one to be is out your dorms and connecting with people in the same or different field as you. I say this because connecting with engineers, musicians, artist, nutritionist and scientist is a wonderful collaboration of a team of leaders who will improve the hearing and speech of our fellow ones. I will be doing research with engineers on how to build robotic elements to draw the kid’s attention to learn, research on many other experiments that will make my those kids be as normal as any other child they meet. This is what drives my
"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." I can hear one of my grandmother's highly regarded quotes resonating inside my head. Apprehension consumed me when I entered college as an undecided major. Unexpectedly that all changed a few weeks into my first semester. My grandmother had a stroke which ultimately affected her speech and was in dire need of a Speech Pathologist. This is what initially sparked my interest in this field. I was determined on working with the geriatric population because of the experience and attachment I endured with my grandmother. However, the irrefutable fact that this is my passion became evident when I started working as an Assistant Teacher at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech.
One of the proudest accomplishments of my life was earning my high school diploma, despite all the hard work that led me where I am today was well worth it. Many people would expect me to say I am coming to college to better myself as a person or to continue my education. The truth is I want to change a life in my community, make my parents proud of their daughter and start a tradition in my family.
Social Workers main objectives are to work for Social Justice, and invoke positive changes for future generations. Social work as I have come to know it is a helping profession on many levels. Social work is not concentrated on only one specific area of need, but targets many areas on a larger scale with vast opportunities in the field. As Hick (2006) states
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
According to the National Association of Social Work (NASW), Social work is defined as, “The professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal.” As such to pursue a career as a Social worker one must contain some key values. Such values include: one must be able to provide help, resources, and benefits to people so that they can achieve their maximum potential in life, they must also uphold that all citizens should be treated equally despite their socioeconomic background. In addition, they have to be willing to maintain trustworthiness and sound adherence to moral ideals, value the dynamic reciprocal interactions
Service is the idea of chosen life path for every social worker. Generally, every job that aimed on the common good is service, however, some professions uses this word in its high, spiritual sense. Service for social worker is not only the act of help or assistance; it is also the possibility and duty to serve people.
The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people. Particular attention is paid to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. Social work is a profession based on enhancing the capacity of people to participate in society and enhancing the capacity of society to include all people in it. Social workers address problems related to social, political, and economic
Their job is to mend situations best way possible. Most people believe social workers are horrible because how they are portrayed. They are always seen taking someone’s child(ren) with a parent fighting to keep them. It does not help that social media gets involved making matters worse just so that they can receive a bigger audience. An individual does not see many things on social media about all the good things social workers do for others. I feel as though if individuals were more open minded they will be able to see the good deed that is accomplished all the time. In order to want change there has to be individuals working for that change, instead of just talking about
My Career The career field I chose is to be a firefighter. The reason why I want to be a firefighter is because they help people and prevent fires from spreading. I’ve always wanted to help people everywhere, because I don’t like it whenever there is an accident and some people die and lose their loved ones, people talking crap about them and just talking and pointing the cameras in their face watching them cry. I want to help people and make a difference and help protect people’s lives, and be someone people recognize when I walk by them.
Social workers are concerned with social problems such as world hunger, domestic violence, child abuse, adequate benefits for veterans and much more. The profession of social work is necessary because without it, there would not be people dedicated to helping other individuals in our world. To dedicate your profession and life to one specific problem in regards to the social work field, is something very few have the will to do. Therefore, social workers are necessary to keep the social justice system afloat. Social workers must have educational background in social work, in order to be familiar with the types of settings they will be exposed to. Social workers must embody excellent social skills, as well as communication skills. Being able
When they are in need we must do everything in our power to make a change. Sometimes this involve advocating for them to see a change in social problems. The definition of a social worker states that they are trained person that carries out work with the aim of alleviating conditions of those in need (12). This often calls the need for social justice. After learning about social workers throughout history, I realize there’s multiple ways to help those in need (11). They’ve been able to implement social welfare for the public.
My understanding about the social work profession is one that works with a diverse group of people to better their well-being in all aspects. Social workers requires: responsibility, passion, and knowledge. The social worker has to understand their own personal cultural values, beliefs, and appreciate the multicultural identities of different people. The profession of social worker requires a lot of skills because they have different tasks and responsibilities. They are aware of social policies and programs for the diverse clients advocating.
Many individuals from communities have devoted their time and efforts to do social work, a lot of these volunteers did their practice in churches before it was recognised as a profession. It was through social investigation and attempts to understand family situations that social work began to develop a profession. A lot of people such as teachers or lawyers believe that what they do is also ‘social work’ that is why social work is a very broad context. Social work is more than just ‘doing good’ and
Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. Social workers serve an essential role to the functioning of our society, as they are committed and dedicated to increasing the quality of life for underprivileged community members. I fully intend on actively contributing to this endeavor, as I believe social workers have the responsibility to ensure that all community members have their needs met and the opportunity to
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
