Career Position
My career aspirations relating to the field of counseling are to become an expertise in the field of counseling. In addition, becoming part of a schools administration team to assist in supporting the public school system, our school administrations, and our teachers to guide our youth in solid counsel socially, personally and academically.

Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. During this time period students are exploring their interests, moving deeply into their studies, taking on more responsibilities, and trying to find their personal identities. Most importantly, this is a time where students turn from their parents and seek advice and approval from their peers. Because many adolescents are emotionally sensitive and vulnerable during this stage of development, their heavy reliance on peers for acceptance and approval makes them more susceptible to emotional damage. School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. Counselors have large shoes to fill. They not only administer assessments, but are also involved in group counseling, individual counseling, and have to plan and implement comprehensive school guidance programs. A counselor must know and be competent in all realms of their position. School counselors work with all children, including children with disabilities in various settings within the school (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 449). As stated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school counseling services must be made available to all students in special education programs as part of their right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (Bowen & Glenn, 1998; Clark, 1998). School counselors are to take on this role in the educational and personal-social well being of students in special education programs. Federal law does require that children, who receive special education services, and do not display appropriate behavior have a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) team (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005) p 449). This team constructs a BIP. Since counselors should be active on the FBA team, there is a need here that must be addressed because this article defines a lack of knowledge present with practicing counselors. With that, counselors do receive relevant training throughout their program. There are only so many classes and hours of instruction that the pre-counselors receive. The curriculum that is generated encompasses what counselors need, but could their be a few gaps and missing pieces? Overall, this first practicum experience has been a learning process. Going into this semester I had zero background working in a school system or with students. Over the course of the semester, I have found myself discovering myself as a school counselor. I believe that I underestimated the amount of work that goes into being a successful school counselor as well as the process that it will take to become a school counselor. I’m the mother of three daughters, my youngest child who’s still in high school insisted that I do my practicum and internship in a school district outside of our county. For the last fifteen years I’v worked in the social service field and I’m looking forward to changing careers.
The Counseling Theory and Practice course has exposed me to various theories and approaches counselors’ use. Learning about the different goals, key concepts, relationships, and techniques has given me insight into the various ways counselors work with students. Furthermore, it has encouraged me to begin to think about my own theoretical framework and which theories resonate with me. As a counselor it is important that I select theories that are in line with both my values and beliefs so that I can more effectively support my students needs. As I progress as a school counselor I will likely develop an integrated theoretical approach to counseling. There are many parts and pieces that I can pull from different counseling theories to tailor an approach well suited for myself. In this paper I discuss three theories with research and how I plan to implement the techniques as a counselor.
My future career goals consist of first, attaining a bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. Upon graduation with a bachelor’s degree, I plan to go back to school to obtain a master’s degree in either school counseling or marriage and family counseling. With a master’s degree under my belt I then want to pursue a career as a school guidance counselor or a marriage and family therapist. This class has continually proven to be extremely beneficial on my journey to becoming a guidance counselor or marriage and family therapist.
The most challenging yet compelling leadership position I had held during my high school years is for sure the one of a counselor at the Camp, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math that are applied to kids by various activities throughout the day at a summer camp. Before I was given a chance to mentor the campers, I had to make sure to finish an online leadership training by a professional coaching and training organization, so then I could complete my hands on Internship experience. This training prepared me on my roles, responsibilities, but also gave a lot of helpful information and leadership tips. This has strengthened my professional school counselor identity because I have been able to see and feel the intrinsic reward of being a school counselor. Although I know there will be times when there will not be successes, these successes have provided me with the ability to take on more of a leadership role. For instance, I have continued to support the middle school transition through the needs assessment and have spoken up in meetings regarding accelerations and retentions based on the information I have about the students.
