While working towards my gals there has been a lot of medical issues in my family. When I was a little girl my mother was in a car accident quite badly. It affected us financially for a while. Fast forward a couple years and my mother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. My mothers heart was functioning at 10% I was 13 years old facing this all practically alone while waiting for my older siblings to reach the hospital. My mother like myself is a fighter. We fought through these contemporary issues together. Then after graduating high school, my mother and I as well got in another car accident this time together. We both suffered many injuries, both still dealing with the after math daily. In addition, my grandfather and a couple other family members have passed away in a brief time frame. These medical expensive drained us financially, psychically and mentally. I took a semester off from college and change my school of choice landing me where I am today at Seminole state college. I am now working full time and going to school full time while paying out of pocket for all my college expenses. I continue to battle with pains while doing. my homework, sitting in class. I am emotionally drained whether it be from stress or just being overwhelmed. I continue to ry and help my friends and family whenever needed. I have been awarded the honor to be in the honors program at Seminole State College and presidents certificate.
I firmly believe that I would be a perfect fit for the Psychiatry residency because of my dedication, experience , passion, knowledge and excellent interpersonal skills. Your residency offers many experiences, which I am looking for in a program including a variety of rotation opportunities, teaching and research experience, and a challenging environment where I can advance my skills as a Psychiatrist. I am confident that my diverse background in medicine coupled with extensive field experience in public health and clinical research will enable me to succeed in the program and excel in my career as a
“To study the abnormal is the best way to study the normal” (William James). Psychiatrists never give up on any of their patients and always help anyone who asks for it. Psychiatrists have a never ending work schedule. Sometimes their patients call them even without an appointment because they are really struggling and they have to go talk to them. Psychiatrists also have to get at least eight years of school and an additional three or more years of an internship (“Career Information Center” 142- 43) . Psychiatrist must also have good communication skills. If they do not then their patient will feel like they do not care about them and they are not listening and the psychiatrists will be putting even more pain and pressure on them (Social Skills Training) . Even though psychiatrists must go through many years of school and training, all of their hard work is pays off knowing that they help people every day.
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.
She was not able to cope with how much her life had been altered and the resources were not available to help her with everyday tasks. At that time, physicians prescribed cortisone for the pain and suggested Ben Gay for the relief of joint pain. Anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications would have helped her cope with all of the changes happening to her and the family. Physicians not only need to treat the patient with the life-altering illness but the patient’s emotional health as well. Over the years, my mother has learned how to cope with her illness and now accepts the fact that she will not be able to walk again.
I don’t always have the answers but, I do what it takes to understand a situation more so that I am able to get the answers. I believe that my purpose is to help people understand their life a little better and speak great over their lives. I would mostly like to help children out so that I am able to help them understand their feelings. Children are usually more vulnerable than anyone else in the world. Becoming a practitioner scholar in this field means learning about different mental illness so that I am better prepared when I encounter different patients.
For the longest time I was unsure, and apprehensive about what profession I wanted to pursue. The medical field particularly intrigued me, from physical therapy to therapeutic recreation. However, occupational therapy is what caught my attention originating from my grandfather.
Psychiatry is a medical field that deals with the diagnoses, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. The FDA is constantly approving drugs for psychiatrists to use that are supposed to help with in their practice. For example, Michael Levin-Epstein, who wrote the article “A New Way to Deliver Psychiatric Meds: Drugs for ADHD and Major Depression Now Can Be Delivered with Skin Patches,” shows how pharmacotherapy is continually being advanced by new ideas and approaches. However, Psychiatric drugs are not always the answer. Prescriptions are not a good remedy when it comes to the overcoming of a mental illnesses, because there is not enough information regarding the effects of the drugs, pharmaceutical companies are driven by profits,
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
It is no secret that our country is seriously lacking when it comes to managing the mental health issues of its citizens. Not only are mental health services expensive and not covered by many types of insurance, but mental health care providers are not always easy to find. To this end I have developed a career goal that is not something I see coming with a specific job title or one that I can see reaching without the help of others. My career goal is to use my background in both information technology and psychology to benefit those in need and to expand mental health care services into communities that are currently lacking easy access to the services.

As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
There are hundreds of different careers in the medical field ranging from neurosurgeons to nurse practitioners. Psychiatry deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional ailments. The main purpose of a psychiatrist is to help people coop with issues and stress in their environment that make it difficult to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle. It is the psychiatrist’s job to ensure the patient can maintain a healthy attitude and continue to provide for themselves. A Psychiatrist may choose to specialize in many sub classes of mental health including children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, addiction, and pain management. While requiring an intense and difficult education, the occupation in psychiatry is one that offers meaningful, fulfilling work and a high-end salary.
I intend to make a positive impact in society by studying nursing and becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners receive advanced training on top of their RN in order to diagnose, treat, and counsel patients. I know that quality medical treatment for mental illness is important through personal experience. I have struggled with clinical depression and an anxiety disorder throughout high school, and for me, medication was a necessity.
While in school, Mom didn’t have it to easy. Not only did she raise a daughter and take care of a husband, she had to deal with numerous setbacks. These included such things as my father suffering a heart attack and going on to have a triple by-pass, she herself went through an emergency surgery, which sat her a semester behind, and her father also suffered a heart attack. Mom not only dealt with these setbacks but she had the everyday task of things like cooking dinner, cleaning the house and raising a family. I don’t know how she managed it all, but somehow she did.
Ever since I can remember, I have always dreamt of a career in medicine. I have always had a passion of saving others people's lives. Being a doctor is meant for me because I love taking the time throughout my day to make a difference in people's lives. I am willing to further my education for an extended amount of time just to fulfill my dreams of becoming a doctor. Others want to become a doctor because of money or prestige, I want to become a doctor to help the people that are ill. My grandmother, who has been suffering from Cancer for 3 years is recovering from therapy. Even though, she experiences skin problems frequently, the doctors are still doing everything in their power to help her recover. Her hair have started to grow back and she is back to her normal self. This is one of the reasons why I want to be a doctor. When one is a doctor, people look up to that individual when they are at their weakest point. When they have no one else a doctor helps maintain a sense of hope for the patient and his or her family. I will be honored to say that I will be the person people turn t...
