My career goals is to start my career as a Medical Assistant working in a medical office. I would like to learn every aspect of the job before specializing in one area. My second career goal is to work in a hospital setting where I can get experience working with patients in that type of setting. After I have gained some experience in the medical arena I plan to continue working with cardiac patients. Medical assistants perform routine clerical and clinical duties in order to maintain efficiency in offices of physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists, and others. medical assistants have both medical and administrative duties. They report directly to an office manager or physician. Those that work in large offices are usually specialize in a certain area. Some of the responsibilities in a medical office include: greeting patients, answering the phone, keeping medical records, completing insurance forms, handling correspondence, making appointments, setting up hospital admission, laboratory services, and managing billing. Medical assistants that are hired to work in a hospital are assigned to work in a specific unit of the hospital. This will allow the MA to specialize and focus on providing the type of care and assistance required by those patients. Some hospitals will provide on the job training for MA working in a specific area. Medical assistants who work in a hospital will often be responsible for helping patients with ADLs (activities of daily living), which include bathing, grooming and toileting needs. They may also assist in transporting the patients from one location in the hospital to another. Some hospitals may allow MA the responsibility for administering medications, treatments and procedures. Medical assistants can also be hired at a hospital to conduct clerical and care coordinator duties. Medical assistants can work with cardiologist in their office doing general MA duties as well as electrocardiography and may be trained in Holter monitor and stress testing procedures. With the increases of people with heart disease it is estimated that the demand for cardiology technicians will increase yearly. Some additional course work may be required after graduation from medical assisting school. The duties I would like are the clinical portion of the medical assistant. I would like doing the administrative part, but that doesn’t interest me as much as the clinical area. I would like to work in a hospital, but refrain from that because of the bathing, grooming and toileting needs. I dislike the fact that we have to teach the patient activities of daily living but would like the care coordinator duties. Care coordinator duties involve discussing the patient’s discharge orders to ensure the patient understands them. Medical assistants must present themselves to the public as neat, well groomed, and polite. They must make patients feel comfortable and follow all instructions from the physician. They must have great communication skills and be a good listener. They must also keep medical information private and confidential. Must be organized, self-controlled and nonjudgmental. Of all the personal characteristics traits the most important one to me is great communication skills and being neat and well groomed. I feel this is important because we are representing the medical community as well as the medical office. If a patient comes into the office and see an assistant with a dirty uniform, they are likely to think that the office has unsanitary practices. Good communication with your patients will help you to help them with their illness. A medical assistant career training involves attending a vocational technical school, junior or four year college.
One year is required to obtain a diploma or certificate through post-secondary programs and 2 years to obtain an associate’s degree. The program covers a variety of areas such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, typing and transcription, record keeping, accounting and insurance processing. They also teach laboratory methods, procedures in diagnosing, medicine and drug related principles, administration or medicine, and basic first aid. They must also study practice for offices, communication with patients, health laws and ethics. An internship is necessary to complete for individuals in accredited programs to receive useful experience in healthcare facilities, like offices and hospitals. Most offices prefer formal training, but it’s not mandatory. However on the job training is becoming progressively outdated. Medical assistants aren’t licensed but can become certified by passing a national examination that ensures adequate certification and competency. The Certified Medical Assistant credential is presented by the American Association of Medical Assistants. Registered Medical Assistant credential is presented by American Medical Technologists. Medical assistant students can also continue their education earning an associate or/and a bachelors in health science. The type of work environment a medical assistant works in will vary depending on their role. Medical assistants working in a physician’s offices generally work fulltime, which is usually when the office open to closing. But some overtime may be expected if the physician needs someone to assist with a patient. As with any job there would be a certain amount of stress. Dealing with people is always a difficult task, dealing with sick patients or patients who are concerned with their health is every harder. My environment would be stressful and I would have no problem dealing with it. Medical assistants make anywhere from $25,000 to 34, 999 annually. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $21, 080 and the top 10 percent earned more than $41,570. Medical assistants can expect to receive other bonuses and benefits that can add as much a $15,000 to their overall earnings. These benefits include social security, retirement plans, healthcare insurance, disability benefits, pension, and paid time off. The well trained medical assistant will make at least 15% over their annual salary. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists medical assisting as one of the occupations expected to see the fastest growth over the next decade. Employment opportunities in this field are expected to grow by at least 34% through 2018. The outlook is even brighter for Certified Medical Assistants, with job prospects that are considered excellent.
A Physician Assistant (PA) practices medicine with a national and state license. They are authorized to prescribe medicine in all the fifty states (What is a PA? para. 1). Physician Assistants’ responsibilities vary on the state laws, the practice setting, and their experience. They can perform procedures, get medical histories, conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications, order and interpret laboratory tests, and assist in surgeries and counseling (What is a PA? para. 3) PA’s can care for about eighty percent of patient conditions (Vorvick & Zieve para. 2).
As a medical assistant, you will spend most of your day interacting with patients from all types of life. There will never be one type of patient, they will always be different. You will need to be helpful to physicians, nurses, all medical staff and patients. You will need to be able to communicate with your patients, co-workers, and other medical professionals.
