My career goals is to start my career as a Medical Assistant working in a medical office. I would like to learn every aspect of the job before specializing in one area. My second career goal is to work in a hospital setting where I can get experience working with patients in that type of setting. After I have gained some experience in the medical arena I plan to continue working with cardiac patients. Medical assistants perform routine clerical and clinical duties in order to maintain efficiency in offices of physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists, and others. One year is required to obtain a diploma or certificate through post-secondary programs and 2 years to obtain an associate’s degree. The program covers a variety of areas such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, typing and transcription, record keeping, accounting and insurance processing. They also teach laboratory methods, procedures in diagnosing, medicine and drug related principles, administration or medicine, and basic first aid. They must also study practice for offices, communication with patients, health laws and ethics. An internship is necessary to complete for individuals in accredited programs to receive useful experience in healthcare facilities, like offices and hospitals. Most offices prefer formal training, but it’s not mandatory. However on the job training is becoming progressively outdated. Medical assistants aren’t licensed but can become certified by passing a national examination that ensures adequate certification and competency. The Certified Medical Assistant credential is presented by the American Association of Medical Assistants. Registered Medical Assistant credential is presented by American Medical Technologists. Medical assistant students can also continue their education earning an associate or/and a bachelors in health science. The type of work environment a medical assistant works in will vary depending on their role. Medical assistants working in a physician’s offices generally work fulltime, which is usually when the office open to closing. But some overtime may be expected if the physician needs someone to assist with a patient.
