Why I want to be a counselor?

The beginning
I believe the decisions we make early in our lives impacts our futures vastly. Even as a little girl I knew that whatever career choice I chose I wanted to be able to directly impact others. That desire sets me on the path to mental health counseling.
Why I want to be a counselor
While attending undergrad, my major changed numerous times pulling me in different avenues, however that desire that burned in me never wavered. I began my undergraduate studies as a Biology student. At the time I wanted to be a pediatrician. The more classes I took the more I knew this career field was not fulfilling. I then changed my major to early childhood education with the hopes of fulfillment, because of my love for children.

After interning at an elementary school and helping with lesson plans I knew rather quickly that being a teacher was a career path I did not want to pursue. Still not quite knowing what I wanted to do with my life I changed my major to criminal justice.
The change of my major also brought on a difference in curriculum which included psychology courses. At first, I was irritated at the amount of general education courses that needed to be completed before fulfilling the criminal justice degree requirements. I took my first psychology class in the fall of 2010 and from that point on I was captivated. I took more psychology classes ranging from developmental psychology to the psychology of personality. I began taking so many psychology classes as an elective, that I added psychology as my minor.
The different psychology courses began to pique my interest. It was intriguing to understand how the mind actually works. It was amazing to learn about the different theoretical approaches to counseling, because I always thought counseling was the act of telling someone
how to fix their problems. I was fascinated in what made people tick. I wanted to learn everything I could about why people act the way that they do. I wanted to work in a career field that would help me acquire the skills needed to understand human
behavior. I worked at the Department of Juvenile Justice as a Correctional Officer, where I saw my fair share of strange and uncommon human behaviors throughout the years I was employed there. I would often ask the juveniles why they behaved in the manners in which they behaved, and why they chose to commit the crimes in which they committed. I would ask these questions due to my curiosity about human behaviors and why humans behaved in such uncommon ways. The most common answer I got from both the female and male juveniles was their home life was not the greatest. They would state I had to take care of myself because my mother and or father was on drugs, so they had to do whatever was necessary to survive. I remember thinking to myself no parent is behaving in the various ways that these children state. Once I left the Department of Juvenile Justice I became employed with the Department of Social Services as a Foster Care Case manager where my views changed drastically. I was able to see the family in its entirety not just the minor child(ren). I began to understand how the family dynamics influences behaviors in each family member differently. This key component helped me to understand the behaviors of my clients and their reaction that often lead to impulsive destructive behaviors. “Family systems perspective holds that individuals are best understood through assessing the interactions between and among family members. The development and behavior of one family member is inextricably interconnected with others in the family” (Corey, 201, p.404).
When I entered college at LSU, in the fall of 2009, I was undecided in my major. I did this purposefully because I wanted to give myself the opportunity to have one full year to try out a variety of classes and truly allow myself to find my passion. It was during my second semester at LSU that I took KIN 2500, a human anatomy course, and felt the feeling I had been hoping I would fe...
From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.
My passion for people continued through high school, as I stayed involved with youth group. After high school, I continued my education at Azusa Pacific University. I entered into the University undeclared, but I had been strongly considering Social Work as my major due in part to my experiences. Once I made the decision to move forward and select Social Work as my major, everything clicked and I felt as though I was right where I was supposed to be.
If I was to become a probation officer, one thing I would want to be is efficient, and successful. There would be several things I would try to focalize my attention on; supervision in communities, and its importance. Probation officers have very complex, and hard job; but if done with the right intentions, and the will to help people you can help change people’s lives.
Several years, colleges, and majors later I found myself still without a gut-felt direction. On a whim I decided to go to EMT school. It was there that I was finally introduced to the healthcare field and loved it at once. After finishing the program I worked the 911 system and also took a job as a patient care technician in a pediatric emergency department. I quickly saw that the hospital setting was where I wanted to be and that I had to become a nurse. That I did, and haven't left the emergency department since!
When I first started college I was a psychology major. The more psychology related classes I took the more I realized that it was not what I wanted to major in. I took a social work class just to see how I would like it and I love it ! Every time I went to class I felt like I could make a difference and help others. Even though I could of made a difference by helping others by getting a psychology degree, I realized that my true passion was to be a social worker.
When I began my studies at the University of Northern Iowa, I had an interest in the field of psychology, but I was not yet sure that I wanted to pursue a career in that area. The classes that I consequently took and the professors that taught them solidified my desire to receive a degree in psychology.
In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students.
1. As I grew up, I never really knew what career path I wanted to take. The thought that scared me was that whatever I did decide to choose, it was going to be what I would do for the rest of my life. When my freshman year in college came around, I majored in nursing. However, I never was fully certain that nursing was something that I truly wanted to pursue. I felt like the only reason I chose nursing to begin with was because my mother is a nurse. I thought about it for a while and realized that I shouldn’t choose nursing as my major just because my mother is a nurse, instead, I needed to choose a major because I have a real compassion and desire for it.
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience. With the aid of many advising sessions I gained a clearer picture of my passions, which as I had come to realize, were what I truly wanted to work towards. Among my interests is Global Health -- in particular, I wish to learn more

A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Counseling helps clients understand and clarify their views on life and learn to reach their goals through making wise choices. In most counseling situations, the client is experiencing personal issues such as low self-esteem,
My advisor will be Dana Gohmann. I am planning on getting a BS in Psychology. I will be required to take a math and several science courses for this degree – on top of all the courses required for my psychology degree. However, I do have about forty-two credit hours of electives. I plan on taking advantage of this and will take a wide variety of classes. I really want to take two semesters of ASL (American Sign Language) at UL. I also want to learn how to play the guitar for a semester or two, as well as take more psychology classes that are not required in my major. By doing this I will still be able to explore, pursue, and enjoy some of my hobbies as well as rule out which parts of psychology interest me and which parts bored me to death. On top of getting a major in Psychology, I think I want to get a minor in pre-expressive therapy. A lot of my psychology class will overlap with some of the classes that I need to take to get my minor in pre-expressive
Since high school, I wanted to be a juvenile criminal psychologist and in college I pursued my degrees because I thought these degrees would send me down this path. It was not until my first semester of senior year that I realized I should have been in the social work program the whole time. My final semester, I took a social work class for the first time and realized it was exactly what I was looking for in the programs I was currently
Most of my life has been focused on my career. I never really thought about my life outside of high school until my junior year. It was not until this year that I realized all the things that were involved with my career interests. Although I am very committed to my career choices. I have chosen to major in elementary education and minor in photography.
