The various media platforms and reporting interests at UC Berkeley provide students with myriad paths to take. For me, narrative writing and investigative reporting best fit my future goals. I have experience with both in academic and professional settings, and I know that at the Master’s degree will give me the tools to take the next step. I am excited about the curriculum, connections, and experiences that the program will provide me. Long-form narrative writing is becoming less of a focus in media, and that is a shame. The best stories, the most impactful stories, and the most meaningful stories take a long time to produce. The payoff is not immediate, but the result of these stories is often significant. I will learn how to build a narrative and edit the final product. I will have the chance to write about the environment or politics. All of these experiences will be spent in small classes with practicing journalists who can teach the nuances of the craft. The two-year program is a commitment, but I will be rewarded by my coursework, my Master’s project, and my writing experience. Only then will I be ready to enter the professional world and tell the stories that cannot be ignored. I hope that I will also couple my narrative writing skills with work for the Investigative Reporting Program. This would provide me the chance to take my knowledge from class and apply it to real-world projects with tangible impacts. I will also have the ability to produce content in different mediums and expand my capabilities as a journalist.
