The various media platforms and reporting interests at UC Berkeley provide students with myriad paths to take. For me, narrative writing and investigative reporting best fit my future goals. I have experience with both in academic and professional settings, and I know that at the Master’s degree will give me the tools to take the next step. I am excited about the curriculum, connections, and experiences that the program will provide me. Long-form narrative writing is becoming less of a focus in media, and that is a shame. The best stories, the most impactful stories, and the most meaningful stories take a long time to produce. The payoff is not immediate, but the result of these stories is often significant. I will learn how to build a narrative and edit the final product. I will have the chance to write about the environment or politics. All of these experiences will be spent in small classes with practicing journalists who can teach the nuances of the craft. The two-year program is a commitment, but I will be rewarded by my coursework, my Master’s project, and my writing experience. Only then will I be ready to enter the professional world and tell the stories that cannot be ignored. I hope that I will also couple my narrative writing skills with work for the Investigative Reporting Program. This would provide me the chance to take my knowledge from class and apply it to real-world projects with tangible impacts. I will also have the ability to produce content in different mediums and expand my capabilities as a journalist. Why do I want to go to Brophy? It is quite simple actually, I want to go to Brophy because I believe the school and staff will give me the best chances of achieving my goals in life. Also, I want to go because when I attended the school during a shadow day I felt that I belonged there and that my personality fit right into what the school expects and wants in its students. Finally, I want to go to Brophy because I do not think that there is another high school in Arizona that is quite like it, from the school’s athletics to its academics and staff. In conclusion, I want to go to Brophy because the school is unique and matches my personality, giving me the best chances of going anywhere in life, while enjoying it.

When speaker Brené Brown was about to give a talk, the event coordinator struggled with calling her a “researcher,” saying that people might not want to come because they would think she was “boring and irrelevant.” Instead, she wanted to call her a “storyteller” since she thought Brene´Brown’s story-telling abilities were a highpoint. Brown’s academic insecurity was not satisfied in simply being called a “storyteller.” She decided her qualitative research was, in actuality, collecting stories and concluded, stories, were “data with a soul.” She then embraced the title “Researcher-Story-teller,” which combined her unique abilities (Brown, 2010). As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Transitioning from writing five paragraph essays to a five page paper was definitely a challenge. In writing 121, we spent our time reading, discussing and analyzing complex stories in particular Heart of Darkness. We analyzed not only Joseph Conrad’s novel; but also, Anton Chekhov’s short stories on characterization. After reading these short stories from Chekhov, we wrote our 100 minute timed write; in addition, I wrote my best other essay about poverty. This class has given me a glimpse of the writing expected of in college. Although it posed challenges for me, it has helped me improve my skills as a writer.

Although it has only been 2 weeks that I have been attending in this writing course, I have already expanded my knowledge greatly and gained plenty of courage in a very little time period. I am not an avid reader, nor do I ever bother to take my own time to go out and pick up or buy a book, but throughout the weeks, I have been assigned to read a new article every week, and each article has made me realize the power and potential reading has to a single person. How it can change someone’s life drastically. I mostly enjoyed reading “The Importance of the Act of Reading” by Paulo Freire, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, and “All Writing is Autobiography” by Donald M. Murray.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
