Becoming a business expert or a doctor was what my parents wished for me from an early age. My father constantly emphasized the importance of these professions in that besides being financially rewarding, they are prestigious. However, little did they know that my interests were in a different field. I became extremely interested in world history during my elementary and high school education. Among the events that fascinated me in the study of world history include the colonization of African states, slavery, and Trans-Atlantic Trade. I would always pose questions to my teacher to elaborate on areas that were not clear to me. Indeed, I had an insatiable curiosity for knowledge about global happenings especially those that took place in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Unknown to me, this curiosity is what would lay the foundation for my interest in my intended major: International Relations.
Though I am originally from Asia, I have been exposed to diverse multicultural environments that have significantly shaped my worldview. Moreover, I am an adventurous person who likes visiting new places for leisure and also to learn. Having been born and brought up in Asia, I was exposed to diverse religions and cultures. Moreover, my high school is an international school where most of my classmates come from either embassy or UN-affiliate backgrounds. These incredible opportunities have substantially nurtured my social skills. I have indeed developed a strong enthusiasm for communicating and sharing with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Besides, I am passionate about life and meeting new people and interacting with them is something I cherish.

In his short article “World History as a Way of Thinking” Eric Lane Martin, “…argue[s] that the most important things the field of world history has to offer the researcher, teacher, student, and general public are the conceptual tools required for understanding complex global processes and problems.” Anyone who follows the evening news or shops at Wal-mart, has encountered the processes and problems Martin speaks of. Our modern society puts pressure on a variety of citizens to grapple with and attempt to understand issues on a scale that moves beyond the local and national. History has long been a tool utilized by scholars, politicians and citizens to help them put current day happenings into context. That context has allowed for a deeper understanding of the present day. In an era when the issues cross national and regional boundaries the need for a different scale of history has become apparent. World history has emerged as a relatively new discipline within academia that is attempting to provide the context for large-scale processes and problems. As the field has grown a variety of authors, some historians, some from other fields, have attempted to write a history of the world. With such a daunting task how can we define success? How can we analyze the history that provides a true global perspective on processes and problems we face? By taking Martin’s two key characteristics of world history, one, it is defined by the kinds of questions it asks and two, it is defined by the problem-solving techniques it uses, we can analyze texts purporting to be world history and access their utility in providing context for the global processes and problems we face today.
Learning history has given me a new perspective on the World today. I have learned how WWI and WWII shaped how the world is today – from the visions of the modern to the three-world order to globalization.
In such a multicultural world, being knowledgeable and understanding of not only your cultural background, but that of others is essential. Building my awareness on cultures different from my own, and how it shapes an individual’s identity, will foster my personal and professional development. Subsequently, I conducted a cultural interview with an individual whose cultural background differed from my own. Several similarities and differences between our cultures were apparent in the interview, specifically in the areas of race, ethnicity, language, values, and worldview.
Living with different kinds of cultures around you is also very knowledgeable to many people. One could learn a lot about someone’s background or country just by interacting or spending some time with them. For example, you can learn about different foods, clothing, fashion, and the kind of lifestyles others might have. Living together helps keeps us in harmony and peace. If we didn’t get along or maybe even share some of the ideas we wouldn’t be such a diverse community. Knowing and underst...
In an increasingly globalized society, people from around the world are being connected like never before. Culture clash, one consequence of this increased connectivity, is when people from different backgrounds who have opposing basic beliefs and customs come into contact. This is usually thought to be an inevitable barrier when meeting people from a culture which is not one’s own. However, I believe that being open minded and flexible can overcome culture clash. People from different backgrounds tend to conflict on basic understandings, but this can be overcome due to mutual understanding of each other beliefs and culture.
Doing this allows the individual to be aware of why and how culture affect their lives and the way they interact with others from differing cultures (Quappe & Cantatore, 2003). It is this awareness that enables individuals to develop cultural intelligence, which is the understanding of how individual culture may be construed by others and how to adapt behaviours in order to improve communication. An understanding of both these concepts allows individuals to develop strategies to implement to avoid miscommunication between themselves and people of differing cultures. The development of both cultural self-awareness and cultural intelligence is integral to efficient and acceptable cross-cultural communication (Brislin, Worthley & Macnab,
I built upon my cross-cultural experiences as I befriended exchange students from Belgium, Japan, and Korea. Each time, the friendships enriched my appreciation and understanding of not only my own culture, but the very concept of culture. What falls under the cultural blanket can vary from person to person, and I found it to be very interesting that while one person could claim lan...

The five regions illustrate Yale’s attempt to diversify the narrow track of history that signified major requirements. Now students in the Global track will touch on 5 major continents, rather than a majority history of the “West.” Even though the reforms created a wider course range, the track does not explain how these five geographic regions can give students a “well-rounded overview of historical themes and approaches.” There is no justification on why the Middle East and Africa are put in the same geographic region. A student can fulfill the Global track without taking a course in the Middle East by simply taking a course on Africa and vice versa.

Communication is a necessary part of our lives. It helps us build good relationships and achieve much success in society.
