Why Homework Is Bad

669 Words2 Pages

Even though homework helps by having teens do things on there own, getting work done, and helps them learn on their own, homework puts a lot of stress on teens and doesn’t improve learning. Homework gives kids unnecessary stress and makes them tired, which leads to lack of sleep. Teenagers who did not get enough sleep are more likely to develop insulin resistance , which is similar to type 2 diabetes. Things like anxiety, depression, and irritability are all associated with lack of sleep. When a student uses sleep time to study more than usual, he or she will have more trouble understanding what is being taught in class and more likely to struggle on an assignment or a test the next day. Staying up late doesn’t not help performance and actually worsens it. Some research shows that short sleeping can make children obese, can cause car accidents, which causes death in teenagers, depression, anxiety, and irritability. (www.teenink.com) The National Sleep Foundation has done research showing that is is better to move school start times to later. In the study it has shown less tardies, less kids being absent, lower levels of depression, and lower levels of car accidents in teens. Less sleep can also lead to acne or other skin problems and can cause your to forget simple things like due dates, numbers, homework, and even names. (www.sleepfoundation.org) The typical teenager needs about 8.5-9 hours of sleep per night. Kids and teens are usually in school for about 6.5-7 hours per day and most high schools start between 7-8 a.m and end between 2-3 pm. (www.netdoctor.co.uk) Many students do extracurriculars for a few hours after school which means a lot of them cannot do their homework until after dinner. Most teens only get about 6.9-7.... ... middle of paper ... ...h for school the next morning." Children and teens are more pressured to perform harder now than 20 years ago when fewer people went to university and there was less competition for places. Finding a university is actually a lot harder now. Dr. Donaldson also said, " Spending too much time struggling with homework can harm your child's health, worrying about whether they can do it can make them nervous, anxious and lacking in confidence, and deprives them proper rest after school." (www.scilearn.com) Homework causes kids to start cheating and plagiarizing because they either can't or they just don’t want too or they're afraid of not doing well and so they copy someone else's homework. Also, homework can also lead to kids not having a good childhood because of how many hours they use doing homework instead of playing outside, having a personal life, and having fun.
