Payton played her whole school soccer game and felt exhausted on her way home. By the time she arrived at her house, she still had to finish her math, science, and social studies homework she was assigned. Payton rushed to finish all of this homework she was bombarded with, while not caring about how it turned out. She was shoving her dinner down her mouth as the sun started to set and it kept getting later in the night. She opened her math textbook and started studying for her math test tomorrow which determines the majority of her grade. Now, it was eleven o'clock and pitch dark outside. Payton is delighted when she sees her bed and falls fast asleep. It is now early in the morning, the bus comes in thirty minutes. Payton hears her mom …show more content…
Most students have a hard time coming to school, maybe it is because they don’t like learning, or maybe because it is boring. Or, is the student’s hatred toward school because it starts way too early in the morning. According to the Scientific American podcast, it states, “After the delayed start, the percentage of students who said they got at least eight hours of sleep a night jumped from about 16 to 55 percent. Class attendance improved, and there were fewer visits to the health center for fatigue-related complaints. Plus, the number of students who said they felt unhappy, depressed, annoyed or irritated dropped significantly.” This clearly demonstrates that student’s attitudes changed toward the idea of going to school after the school time was delayed. You can say this because after the delay in school time started, the attendance went up which means that students wanted to show up at school. Students also felt that they were not as depressed as when the middle school starting time was earlier. You may be thinking that if the school time is delayed, children may start staying up later at night. This is not really true because going to school is a lot of work and it also requires a lot of homework to be done. Most students are tired by the end of school, and even more tired after they are done with all of their homework. Children will definitely want to go to bed early to get a full night's rest, this is because students will take advantage of this since school starts early in the morning. Even if they do go to bed late, it would probably be because of after school activities and a lot of homework, not because the children wanted to stay up late on purpose. In addition, if the students go to bed late, they will still get a better amount of sleep because the middle school starting
This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their school starts later. Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before.
Allowing students to sleep more by starting school later would benefit them in a multitude of ways and keep them from feeling enervated. According to the online article, A Wake-Up Call on High-School Starting Times, “...troubled kids often get caught up in a distress cycle in which too little sleep causes them to experience anxiety and inner turmoil, which, in turn, cause them to lose more sleep. In the worst
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
In the two articles, “High Schools Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens” by Michelle Trudeau and “High Schools Will Keep Starting Too Early. Here’s why” by Dan Weissman. Each author uses different evidence to support his or her claim about school starting times. According to “High School Starting Later to Help Sleepy Teens”, most teenagers are not getting the proper rest at night and is causing a severe consequence to their everyday experiences. Students need sleep because it can prevent a child from falling asleep in class and helping the child focus. “students reported less depression when there was a later starting time.”
Sleep deprivation for students in school can affect mood, health, ability to pay attention, deal with stress, and retain information, but that's not even everything that is affected. Students are not getting enough sleep to sustain them. As a result of waking up too early for school, students do not function properly. Due to students being tired in the morning, they would learn more in classrooms if school started later.
Most high school teens and middle school teens don't get enough sleep, you are supposed to have 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night. Teachers and other educational people know this but they don't do anything to stop it. It is a scientific fact that teens learn more efficiently when they are well rested. Teenagers won't fall asleep later so they are continually losing sleep. There may be many causes why this is harmful in school relations but it is also dangerous in general, if students are too tired or over powered that can cause some dangerous side effects for example: getting in car accidents, alcohol, and cigarettes just so they can stay up longer.
Sleep is extremely important to all of us, but students and teens aren't getting enough of it and it’s a problem. When teenage students are tired, that increases obesity, illness, anxiety, and depression. No parent or teacher wants their kids to have those qualifications so that's one of the reasons why school should start later.
High school classes should begin later in the day an end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks. Class should start later, Look at how students react in the morning when teachers try to teach there first class at seven in the morning. Having class later will also help kids stay up and not go to sleep in class. First you never know what A student had to do the night before. One time i was doing a project and it was due the next day I stay up all night doing the project. the time i got done with it was four o'clock in the morning, and schools starts at seven there is no way any person can go off of two and a half hours of sleep and expect to be there and be 100 percent active. Therefore, Students do not work
Schools starting later will allow students’ brains to wake up fully. In the opinion of Donn Dexter he believes “high school students are reported to be excessively sleepy, resulting in decreased academic performance, increased psycho-social problems and increased risk of morbidity and mortality from accidents. Early school start times have been noted to contribute
In the morning I turn my alarm clock off and fall back asleep then I realize I was late for school I believe that middle school should start later. No one wants to wake up at 6:00 in the morning, students will be more awake in school, it will be less stressful for students in the morning. That is three reasons why we should not wake up at 6:00.
87 percent of high school teens are not getting the sleep that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Because, school starts at an early time, the time for sleep is compressed to a point where their minds and bodies are not ready to be awake (Richter, Ruthann). Due to having cell phones teens are staying up later, after doing homework to check their social media account, talk to family members, and to catch up on the new they missed out on in school or while doing homework. With the academic stress that is put on to teenagers in this modern world that has so much to offer and not enough time to seek it all, many come home from various practices and jobs just to do four to five hours of homework from advanced classes or even extra work from level classes that are required in all schools. The school should reduce the amount of homework given every night
It is no secret that schools start quite early in the morning. In fact, 75% of schools in the United States start at 8:30 a.m. or earlier. This may benefit children who participate in many after school activities, or help busy parents who drop their children off before going to work. However, early start times are the reason why 70% of high schoolers get less than 7 hours of sleep a night. Although early start times benefit busy parents and children who participate in extracurriculars, I believe schools should start later to cut down the amount of teen driving accidents, ensure students are getting enough sleep, and to boost academic performance.
Doesn't it suck waking up early every week day and you have to go to school. What if school started at a later time, that'd give you plenty of time to wake up and get ready for school. If you had more time in the morning to get up then you would not be tired at school and focus better. Also, it would help there be less depressed teens. Finally, you could do homework in the morning if you procrastinated.
Did you know that sleeping might help battle cancer (Source H) ? I didn't know until now. Many parents and students are aware that they (the students) are not getting enough sleep and that it affects their health. Some schools are pushing their school hours farther in order to help solve the sleep deprivation conflict. I qualify this solution up to the point if schools start no later than 8:30 am in the morning.
Should high schools classes begin later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students natural sleep clock? Some people may think high school classes should begin later in the day and end later in the day, But me personally I think the high school hours going to sleep early in result of waking up early and leaving school early is fine as it is. I strongly disagree on the fact that high school classes should start late and end late. Personally like really who would want to start school late and leave I know for a fact I don't want to be in school majority of my day. Some Kids that is in high school may have an Occupation that they would need to be able to attend and give 110 percent, Because that was a commitment that they gave there boss But Leaving school late already
