Gun law in australia essay
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
Australian school teachers should absolutely NOT, under any circumstances have access to any sort of firearm at school.
Recent talks in parliament have brought of the concerns of student’s safety by allowing teachers at school to carry a firearm in case of an event that puts them, the teacher, or the students in danger such as an armed attacker. in this piece I will show you why guns should not be in the hands of untrained teachers on school premises.
Over in the United States of America, with in the first 23 weeks, there was 24 school shootings. That averages 1 attack per week where students lose their life. While in Australia, there has not been a mass shooting or school attack since 1996. That’s over two decades where schools have been safe because of Australia safe gun laws. So there is absolutely no need for teachers to have a firearm in class to “protect” the students.

For a teacher, or anyone, to handle a firearm safely they must be trained very well and know how to use a gun very well.
This will cost lots of time and money that could be spent on better things such as better education for the students. If an attack was in place and the teach was unqualified to handle a gun, or might not be the best shot, they could put a student’s life at even more risk. If the accidently shoot and kill a student because the accidently misfire the gun, not only would the student’s family be grieving, the teacher could be charged with lots of things like manslaughter, meaning they would lose their job and go to jail, which is not good for the teacher at
all. I the US students that are involved in school shoot ups can obtain their weapons very easily just by going into their parent’s room or even walking down to the local Walmart where you can by a .22 rifle/pistol and all you need to show is your driver’s licence. If teachers have handguns or any sort of firearm, it will make access to these powerful weapon 20 times easier to obtain. You might say “it will be in a gun case with a lock that needs a key to get in”. They could easily get the key from you as it must be close if the gun needs to be effective enough to stop an attacker quickly. These students could then attack the students of the school and could cause a mass shooting. If an attack was in place on a school in Australia, there are special teams of trained Police officers and tactical SWAT teams to stop the attack from happening. The students inside the classrooms would be in lockdown reducing the risk of a casualty. Teachers don’t need firearms, there job is to teach not to “protect” the students. In Australia, there is absolutely NO reason at all for teachers to carry any sort of firearm at school. This would only cause more problems than it will stop, giving students easy access to powerful weapons and teachers a chance to “pick off” the naughty kids in their class if they snap.
Arming teachers is deranged. Many teachers or potential teachers may shy away from their dreams or future plans of being a teacher with forcing him/her to carry guns and police student’s.
Not only will it be expensive, but it will be time consuming. The average gun safety class offered by the National Rifle Association is “six hours long, with 11 students, and costs $130” (Yamane 5). Using President Trump’s data-less statistic, let’s say that 10% of teachers in a particular district are eligible to receive gun safety training. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, on average, “there are 254 teachers in a district in Texas” (NCES). Rounding down, that means that 25 teachers in a district would receive the training. About $3250 of money would be spent on gun safety. That is money that could be used in other ways. Another aspect of gun safety training is the time commitment. As stated above, the typical gun safety course is six hours long. Personally, I would not be comfortable with only six hours of gun safety. I do not think that six hours is enough time to train teachers how to defend
In America there is 89 firearms per 100 people (Moore) so it is safe to say most people will come in contact with a firearm in their life time. But when you do will you know how to handle the situation? Guns can be deadly when abused and used incorrectly. There is a way to reduce the unnecessary deaths. Firearm safety is the important piece in reducing the deaths and firearm abuse and it should be made mandatory in schools.
When I was in elementary school, I never feared of having an intruder enter my school, nor did we ever prepare for a tragedy such as that. It was not until recent years that school shootings became more of a common and feared issue. As a future educator, it is a terrifying thought that my classroom could be invaded and it would be my responsibility to protect my students. Even with the number of school shootings rising every day, our government has yet to make it legal for teachers in every state and every school to carry a gun in the classroom. This essay will review and analyze the opinions of multiple scholars and their input on the issue of teachers carrying weapons in the classroom and protecting the safety of students. It will discuss
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
Another reason teachers should not be able to carry guns is because it would be very hazardous; Kids would feel unsafe with guns easily accessible. Having a gun in the classroom would create tension and make it to focus. If teachers accepted firearms then a child could get their hands on it. According to Corbett from Slate magazine, “If a gun finds its way into a teacher’s desk, briefcase, or purse. A child will get his hand on it.” If the gun was easil...
... a high school student, I don’t take much stock in the safety codes and drills in place to keep students safe in the event of a shooting. I would feel much safer knowing my teacher has the ability to protect the class, rather than hide and lock the door. An educator is responsible for the students in their class. They are responsible for their education and their safety while the children are in their classroom. The safety of fifteen or more students would be much more easily secured by one person if that person was armed. Promoting teachers to arm themselves also prevents school shootings; criminals don’t attack a victim that can fight back. At least 60% of school attacks would be prevented with an armed faculty warning sign. School faculty members should be armed to secure the safety of the countries students, and in hand prevent the majority of potential shootings.
In “Vulnerable Schools Need Protection: Guns, Training For Teachers may be the answer”, published in a 2008 edition of the Chicago Tribune, David McGrath argues that some teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for protection. First, McGrath states that if a random psychotic gunman were searching for someplace to attack, his classroom would make an easy target. He feels that if he was trained and armed, his class would not be trapped without a chance of survival because he would be able to defend against the gunman. Sec...
School shootings are still happening and we have to put a stop to it. We need to have these teachers prepared and ready to fight. Students to deserve to have their lives out to rest knowing something could have been done that’s why we need to have these teachers armed. This is a cold world if someone enters a school with a weapon teachers need to have their weapon ready too for the sack of their children. A school is a fun place to learn but to also keep safe. This is why teachers should be armed.
There's a problem in America. Children, defenseless are being shot one by one. They go to their school and the schools are a gun free zone. The shooters take advantage of it and take the children's lives. Teachers should be able to carry a handgun to protect their children. This is very important, to all teachers and students for their safety. Shooters wouldn't come in the school knowing that the teacher had a gun. Students would feel way safer. There would be a lot of safety that would go into this.there are a lot of facts that can help us make the decision.
I have discussed this argument with several people and most of them are against teachers carrying guns while teaching. One main concern that I have heard is, “what if the teacher is having a bad day”, or “what if they decide to take it out on the students? And then I remind them that teacher’s go through a very rigid background investigation and are trusted individuals! We must trust our teachers and their judgment. If we feel comfortable enough with these teachers to send our kids to them five days a week, f...
About forty years ago, teachers used to say that the worst problems in their schools were students chewing gum and talking during class. Wouldn't it be wonderful if those were still the biggest problems? Unfortunately, teachers now are struggling with many deaths of their students and maybe even their own children. The numbers of teenagers’ deaths increase everyday from gun violence. Students, particularly boys, who carry guns, are more likely to be involved in drug activity according to The Children Data Bank and more likely to have committed crimes with weapons. Likewise, girls who carried guns were more likely to report feeling threatened. Therefore, stricter law for gun control will lessen the insecurity of a person when holding a gun and prevent further unnecessary death.
Allowing teachers to carry guns could help lower school shootings. “While some believe tighter gun controls are the answer, others believe the best solution comes in giving more people — like teachers and administrators — more training and more access to firearms that can save lives as well as take them away” (Evensen guns and teachers). “Our organization
Today, youth like myself are allowed to pursue education and get jobs when they are willing. When the youth do end up getting their first jobs, we have limited hours. However, this wasn't so in 1905. Florence Kelley's famous speech in 1905 is based on the laws of child labor. Florence Kelley is a social activist for children and women.
What would you do if you were in a school shooting? Students at schools fear the worst after what happened in Florida. We should not enact more gun control laws as it will probably make it worse and people will find ways around the laws. Gun control laws should not be enacted, because shootings would most likely still occur even if enact more laws, and people have ways of obtaining more weapons, and the crime rate would still exist and may even gradually increase. We should not enact more gun control laws because shootings would most likely still occur.
