Gunshots, Fire, bombs, all flying in the sky. Men in uniform are scattering for shelter. It seemed all to simple for General Grant, “Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike at him as hard as you can and as often as you can, and keep moving on.” This mindset resulted in one of the most bloodiest war of all time, the Civil war. Grant pursued with this idea in mind, sending thousands of men in attack. Although coming with great force to Virginia, both Lee and Grant faced great loss of men. Would the fighting ever end? If both sides are just leaning back and forth at each other, will there ever be a greater force to knock the other over? A successful win for the Sherman, indeed. Quickly after this win they rushed off to send a marching army to Savannah, threatening them of any possible win in the war. With holding a deep breath, everyone heard of how they completely destroyed all things that seemed of value. Nothing was left, it seemed that all hope for them to win faded. Lost hope, lost dreams. But with thrill the south rejoiced in this, could it be possible? Could the Confederacy have won? But on April 1, 1865 the Union forces broke into the Confederate lines in order to take over the city. Only 2 days later, they marched to Richmond. They surrounded Lee’s army, putting them in a helpless position. Lee proclaimed, “There is nothing left for me to do but go see General Grant, and I would rather die a thousand deaths.” With envy in his eyes, he forced himself over to the village of Appomattox Court House. The Union general was there, coated with mud and a disgracefully crumpled uniform. Seeing the circumstances, it’s truly amazing how the Union managed to win. Even though the Union general was covered and dirt, and Lee was in a nice clean uniform, the side to succeed was the one covered in dirt.
