The Olympics is a sporting event watched by people all over the world. On average, over two hundred countries have at least one participant for a specific Olympic gathering. Although many of these countries do not get any medals, the Olympic games is a global event that attracts immense attention. A It would only make sense for the most popular sports in the world should be a part of this mega sporting stage. Almost every sport in the top twenty-five most popular sports in the world are included in the Olympic games and have been for years upon years. Of the top twelve most popular sports, only one has not been an Olympic sport for an extended period of time. Golf had not been a part of the Olympics since 1904 until the most recent Olympics, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Many people still do not believe golf should be a part of the Olympics even though it is one of the most popular sports worldwide. The golf industry is a large and limitless industry due to golf major global popularity. Needless to say, golf is an Olympic worthy sport and should remain in the Olympics for years and years to come.

yet simple sport the produces memorable moments for both the player and the spectators. The ability for golf to provide iconic moments is a reason why people gravitate to the sport. You truly do not have to be a high quality golfer or even a golfer at all to appreciate the spectacularly beautiful and mystifying shots occasionally hit by the best of the best. These said shots create dramatic and exciting moments for the sports world Golf has been the catalyst for two of the top twenty most iconic and memorable moments in sports history according (Sports Moments.) This proves that golf is a sport capable of huge historical moments. The opportunity for these iconic moments is what draw people to watch. With the heightened stage of the Olympics, the potential for a historical sports moment is much greater. The heightened Olympic stage has already propelled a few sports moments into the top twenty most iconic in history. Without the Olympic stage, these moments would not have been as memorable. For instance, “The Miracle on Ice” is one of the most iconic and memorable moments in sports history. This moment is an Olympic moment. If that specific USA hockey team had beaten the USSR in a simple international tournament, the USA victory would not be near as famous and now commonly known as “The Miracle on Ice.” The chances are high that a least one more golf moment would be in the top twenty most memorable sports moments in history if golf had been in the Olympics from 1908-2012. There have already been a few moments that, with the significance of the Olympics, would have been memorable moments in the history of sports. Unfortunately, those moments did not occur in the Olympics and are easily forgotten by most sports fans. The Olympics bring more viewers and the helps to make a memorable moment. More people watching results in a more commonly known event. Golf also deserves to be an Olympic sport because the golf industry Is on an upward trend. Approximately 2.2 million people took up the game of golf in 2015. That is the second highest yearly total behind the 2.4 million year, the peak of Tiger Woods’s popularity (Heitner.) The television viewership ratings were also up in 2015. There was a single day of a single tournament that about 14 million people watched some of the tournament. On Sunday of the 2015 Masters, 14 million people viewed the CBS telecast. The Masters Tournament usually acquires the largest number of viewers among all professional golf tournaments. The 2016 Olympic golf tournament received the second-most viewers of all professional golf tournaments in 2016. It was second only to the 2016 Masters. The 2016 Olympic golf tournament topped three of the four major tournament on the PGA schedule. The three non-Masters major tournaments were the British Open, U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. Those three tournaments are placed in the same category as the Masters. It is amazing that, after a 112 year break from the Olympics, the Olympic golf tournament received such high viewer ratings even though the final round of the tournament was not extremely eventful. Despite the high television rating, many people could make the argument that golf is not exciting enough to be an olympic sport. For three of the four days of a golf tournament, watching is not exciting for non-golfers. It is only until the fourth and final day that the magic could possibly, not probably, occur. People that do not play golf do not get the same enjoyment out of watching golf. If you do not play golf, you probably do not fully appreciate the difficulty of certain shots the professionals appear to make effortlessly. The argument could be made that only one day of the entire tournament is worth watching to majority of people. All the other times are far too boring to be a part of the sacred Olympic games and that is reason enough to exclude golf from the Olympics. Some say that golf would cause the Olympics to be far less exciting than it would be without golf. Even though golf can be boring at times, it still gets a high number of viewers. This may be in part to the lack of a main sporting event during the middle of the day. Many of the most popular Olympic events are held in the late evening or even at night. This allows the people that would not normally watch golf to tune in because of the desire to watch an Olympic event no matter which event it is. Even more non-golfers watch the coverage on the final day because they are curious who will go home with the medals and how the medal situation will play out. Not every Olympic golf tournament will end in a dramatic and thrilling way, but over time, there is bond to be one that spikes a person’s interest for golf. Those years that do end in an exciting way will, by far, outweigh the years were the ending seems anticlimactic. The exciting moments in golf are so engaging that you can feel the energy and tension of the situation just by watching the coverage. Experiencing one of these exciting moments is a very invigorating feeling. Many people watch golf because of the chance to witness the greatness and empowerment of these events. The lead up to the end of a tournament and the unpredictability of golf. It is very nerve racking to understand that a player could be playing the best golf of his or her life and end up losing the entire tournament on the last hole. There are very few sports where the results can be completely altered until the final shot goes into the hole. The build up to the end off the tournament is one reason why golf is globally popular.
Golf’s worldwide popularity is also due to the nature of the game. The game of golf is one of the only sports you can be terrible at and still enjoy. This allows more people to play and enjoy the game. If you had to be good to have fun, only the people with the natural ability to play would be involved in the game. Enjoying golf is not the only reason to be involved in the game. Golf can reach you through charity as well. Compared to all other professional sports, the professional golf tours donate more to charity by huge margins. About 2 billion dollars have been donated through the PGA tour. As comparison, the NFL has donated approximately 370 million dollars in the last 40 years and the NFL’s charitable donations is one of the closest to the PGA
(DiMeglio.) Golf has been the catalyst for the helping of many communities worldwide. The generosity and vast expanse of the golf industry is worthy of being rewarded. The reward of being involved in the summer Olympics is exceedingly deserved. The golf industry’s rise in popularity will insure the olympic experience for many people will improve due the addition of golf. The enjoyment and understanding of olympic golf is easy for the vast majority of people. This enjoyment and recognition of the tournament’s magnitude will have a positive result on the Olympics. The number of viewers of the Olympics will only increase with golf in the mix. Golf is a sport worthy of a place in the Olympic games and should remain in the Olympics for as long as the Olympics exists.
The agency I chose to do is the Hillandale golf course, which is located in Durham North Carolina. The reason why I chose to do my project on Hillandale golf course because since the beginning of the semester I have been traveling over to the golf course twice a week for a class learning the rules and the way the game of golf is played. Hillandale golf course is named the “Granddaddy golf course of Durham/ Research Triangle golf”. Hillandale was donated to the Durham area back in 1911 through the philanthropic interests of long-time Durham resident John Sprunt Hill. Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell originally designed the course. Donald Ross had designed the first 9 holes and Perry Maxwell came up with the last 9 holes. Since 1960 over 1.7 million rounds of golf have been played that being an average of 45,000 yearly. This public golf course provides a challenge from each level of players in the game of golf. In 1960, the Hillandale Golf Course was moved to its current location in Durham and was redesigned by George Cobb, who is also the designer of the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mr. Callaway had once stated, “ We feel we have been extremely fortunate in our success as a company so much so that we would like to give something back to the community that helped make us so successful.” Therefore in 1993, they have donated $1 million. They were established with the mission to improve the community where Callaway Golf employees work and live. This was the same year that has signed an amateur golfer at the time, Annika Sorenstam, as a staff professional.
...ip. Today, the USGA membership exceeds 5,500 clubs throughout the United States. Golf, being one of the oldest of today’s modern sports, thrives in popularity continuing to entice young and old, male and female, rich and poor players.
Dodgeball was born over 200 years ago in Africa, where they used rocks to throw at each other and worked together as a team. The game is still played today and uses the same aspect of teamwork, but foam balls are used instead of rocks. Many people think that dodgeball is still too violent and shouldn’t exist. Dodgeball should not be banned in schools because it has health benefits, offers a challenge, and lets students look forward to going to school.
Golf is a very fun activity which is played by many all around the world. But a big concern about golf is, is golf really a sport? Many people say yes but also, many people say no. I am here to tell you why I think golf is a sport.
Olympics fans are missing the fastest paced sport in the world. I think NASCAR should be one of the sports in the olympics. The following will help me get my point across: competitiveness, popularity, and that it is fast-paced.
As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate. For young teens whose only transportation is a skateboard, they can only travel so far, and skateparks are not close enough. To eliminate the amount of skateboarders in heavily populated areas, I propose that cities invest more money into building skateparks so skateboarders have a safe place to practice the sport.
“Golf is the fastest growing competitive sport in the United States today” (Fossum 87). This game is rapidly growing In the United States, but is also a very expensive game to play. Today, it is a $25 billion business in the United States. (Dobrian). Golf is a game of dedication and patience that has a very interesting history. There are three main parts when it comes to the history of golf and how it can about. The creator of golf along with its origin, the advancement in equipment over the years, and the first golfers and courses are all major things in the history of the game.
Football, one of the most popular sports in the U.S., is also the most dangerous; it holds an astounding half a million injuries nationally due to the sheer violence and brute strength used against another player in the sport, and, although it is believed that these injuries can be prevented, there is nothing stopping another player from recklessly hurting another except their will-power, this is why football should be banned from high schools.
Imagine the sun bursting through the trees for the first time of the new day, the smell of freshly cut grass still potent to your nose as you tee the ball up for a round of golf in the cool mist of a spring morning. "That is what brings you back every time, the smell of the air, the coolness of the whether and the beautiful surroundings that make every shot enjoyable." (Suess, PI) This is the game of golf in its finest and most exquisite time to many people and many people it has touched in its long history. Golf is a lifestyle and not just games to people that are avid in playing. The game of golf has a history that is rich in technological advances and personal accomplishments, which through time has shown to shape the sport into what it has become today.
Golf. A sport that started out with just a wooden stick and ball, is now a very well know game by many people all around the globe. The sport that also just started out as a way to mess around has become a job for some of the people and is making some golfers millions of dollars each year. A sport that many people spend their whole lives playing or watching used to not be exactly what is today. Even though golf is a very well known sport now, golf has been around for hundreds of years and is played by people all over the world. The sport of golf has been dated all the way back to years before 1,000 and has kept growing exponentially ever since. According to the International Golf Federation, they have 144 different countries a part of the organization, leaving out 51. The game of golf is played at many different levels all the way from junior tournaments, all the way to professional events. The evolution of the sport of golf is made up of a couple main things. These two main things are how golf got its start, and what has changed about the game.
According to sports, golf become more popular in our society, many people are practice it and other play golf as a hobby. This research will be about golf and the negative affect that cause to society in past or even today. Golfing aims a lot of discrimination among women, it provided racism and the cost of this sport creates tension between social classes.
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have been affected by sports in their bank accounts. Tax increases for funding a new stadium, golf course and even school programs have hurt the middle class Americans. Sports have taken control of small communities and soon will take control of society
This year a player from the Philadelphia Eagles, Chris Long, donated his entire base salary, one million dollars, to educational charities. This is only one story out of the thousands of players in professional sports. Not only do these athletes help their community but they also give great hope and motivation to others who want to become athletes as well. Everyone always says that the chances of someone becoming a professional athlete are slim. The players who have made it to professional teams are living proof that anything is possible if you put your mind to
(Laughter.) The older I got, it became more for business too. I'm in the medical industry, so a lot of doctors, they want to go golfing, can't take them golfing. It's a social thing. People are always at golf tournaments, charity events. They're guy friends and even boyfriends. I remember begging a boyfriend, “Please, let me go golfing with you.” “You're going to hate this.” I did it first. “This is so boring. You guys are mad the whole time.” But then once you learn, you get better, you're like, “Okay, I get it.”
