Why Go to College to Get More Knowledge?
I have known since I was young that I was to go to college. It was sort of a predetermined idea for me by my parents, drilled into my head at a young age. There was hardly ever a point in time in which I considered not going. As I begun to ponder the idea of college, feelings of excitement built up inside. I dreamt of the brick buildings atop a perfectly landscaped lawn. I pictured the very campus on which I would take my first breath of independence. I anticipated the ability to gain knowledge without unnecessary high school drama plaguing my learning experience. Most importantly I look forward to furthering my education and investigating into different career paths.
The most obvious reason as to why I adhered to my parent’s demands is because most every career in one of my desired job fields requires a college

education. I have been considering pursuing a career in the medical field for as long as I can recollect. If I decide to take action on this dream of mine, a college education is a must, and a lengthy one at that. Although it is possible to land a job without a college education, my classmates, as well as myself, seem to believe that without a college education, success in the working world is near impossible.
I have become passionate about attending college simply because I have discovered the true purpose of a college education.

College is more than meets the eye. It isn’t all about brick buildings, a pretty landscape and a heavy workload. College is discovering more about who a student is as an individual and which career path would allow them to make their best possible contribution to society. Many are unsure of the field they would like to enter until they reach college. As a sophomore in high school, I am still unsure as to whether I should go into the medical field or major in English and play it by ear from there. I have proven to show more proficiency in English than in math or science throughout the course of my academic life. However, entering the medical field has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I am unsure of English related careers. I am positive that attending college will allow me to investigate further into this matter. Attending college will allow me to discover new subject matter that intrigues me and sparks a great

interest.
As I grew older, another deciding factor in going to college was allowing myself to truly experience learning and make that my primary focus. Since entering the public school system at age five, I’ve found that school has an overwhelming social aspect that, at times, can take away from the reason why students attend. School has become more than just education. Cliques, bullying and the overwhelming desire to fit in have made it difficult to appreciate the value of school and education. In college, students aren’t required to eat lunch with one another, which takes away immensely from the social aspect. Students also are not forced to congregate in an area for a non-academic purpose. Taking away from this social aspect decreases the pressure that many high school students are under to fit in, which allows students to divert more of their attention to their studies.
As I look into my future, I look forward to what awaits me at college. I can’t wait to meet new people, enroll in interesting and seemingly more relevant classes, and to take the first step to becoming an independent adult. I am grateful to have finally learned that college is more than brick buildings and hours of work. It’s about independence, tenacity and the knowledge that will follow one outside of the campus and into the world.
