Why did English men come to North America? There are several reasons why the Englishmen came to North America. I think the most important reason they decided to come settle in North America is they finally wanted to have their own freedom. Freedom was a big thing at this time. They knew if they came over here they would have more freedom and have more opportunities. I guess they got tired of it and decided it was time to make a change. By them having more freedom they could experience more and now they could possibly make their own decisions. The Englishmen came to North America in desire for gold, wealth, and other ways to make money to be rich. By them moving here they felt like this was a great money making opportunity. One of the biggest
money makers was growing sugars on islands of North American Coast. This was very profitable at the time. English felt like this could help them get more money. They were really just trying to get rich any possible way they could at this point in time they really didn’t care how they did it. Englishmen also came to North America because of religious freedom. The puritans were Protestants who did not agree with Anglican Church. The puritans wanted to change the church to it more Holy. They felt that their religion was the only true one and they felt like everyone should just go with the flow and follow there lead. They basically just wanted everyone to be apart of what they had. They thought it was the best thing to do. By the Englishmen coming to North America they felt like it was time for them to start owning their own land and doing what they wanted to with it. Owing land was a big thing at this time. The demand for certain raw material like wood could put many slaves out of a job then the land owner suddenly decided it was more profitable to raise sheep. England’s unstable economy led to poverty. In my point of view this is why Englishmen came to North America. They came here to experience a new life. They realized it was time to view the world at a different point of view. Englishmen just wanted something new that was gone benefit them.
The colonists that traveled to America came for many reasons. Once the colonies were established, economic, political, and religious systems were implemented. The Puritan and New England colonies, Massachusetts and Connecticut, had some similarities and differences.
In the early eighteenth century consumer goods flooded American markets, the colonists needed to sell what they produced in order to purchase British goods that were beyond their ability to manufacture and therefore made them feel more a part of the British "empire of goods".
The English Settlement in the New World was largely the result of the Age of Exploration. The English started emigrated to the New World around the early 1600s; they settles in regions including the New England and the Chesapeake region and by the 18th century these two regions had developed their own society. These two regions had developed different political, economic and social system in their regions. The political differences were due to who governs the colony. The economic differences were due to the motives of the settlement. The social differences were due to the people who settled there, while the New England emigrated as a family, the Chesapeake emigrated with mostly male.
When one looks back on the history of the British settlers in the Americas, there are many differences and similarities between those who settled up north in the New England colonies and those who settled down south. There are also differences in the way the north and south lived their lives, did their jobs, what their economic system was like and how the labor force was set up. Among these many differences there are some similarities as well. Those who left England sought religious and political freedom, as well as governmental and economic stability.
British colonists were outcasts and religious misfits who came to the new world to escape persecution and social ills. Britain saw the colonies as a place to send dissidents and ne’er do wells. English colonists were not agents of the crown but settlers looking for land to start anew. The British government’s main interest in America was to protect their colonists and allow them to produce goods, specifically lumber, cotton, and tobacco. As a consequence, Native...
It was the age of discovery that first provoked intrigue and curiosity of new lands, particularly the Americas, and how the Europeans could expand to fit their society within the borders of this unknown and unexplored land. By the 1580s, more had been learned about the Americas, but any colonization until this point had not even been attempted. And so it was the English, under Queen Elizabeth I's rule, that were issued to establish a colony along the east coast of North America. However, when this great accomplishment was finally made in 1587, it was not long founded until its ultimate fate ended in the disappearance of the colony three years later, instantly creating one of the greatest American mysteries that will ever be.
Although the English were not the first Europeans to explore or colonize North America, their settlements along the Eastern seaboard became the thirteen colonies that later formed the United States. England relied on private trading companies to establish a presence in North America. Two of these groups, the Virginia Company was the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. “ The Jamestown colony was modeled after a military expedition, transplanting about 100 hardy Englishmen into the Virginia…”(Smith 3). And the voyage of the Mayflower, bringing people to Plymouth, Massachusetts.” ...1620-1647 describes this journey and provides a glimpse of the settler's life in what became New England.” (Bradford 5). Jamestown and Plymouth
Some settlers came for jobs and others came because either the king was going to give them money. For example “ les Filles du Roi”. “Les files du roi” were approximately 800-900 young french single woman aged 15-30 who came by themselves or were recruited by the king because there were barely any woman and the king wanted to keep populating New France. The woman themselves would find a man and see if she would get along, if so they would get married and the king would pay them to have large families. Another example some settlers also came because of their intrests in North America such as wanting to trade for spices, skills, and jewels. Settlers that were men also came bcause they needed a job or needed to make a living off of something. In the 1400`s european contries tried to find new water routs to asia which led them to the finding of the Americans.
Most of the first settlers in America came from England and considered themselves to be Englishmen. At first they relied on their mother country for money, supplies and protection. As the colony became larger and more populous, people gradually started feeling as if they were a separate nation. By the eve of the Revolution the patriotism has built up to such an extent, that the colonists believed America was self-sufficient enough to exist as independent unit from England.
The colonists immigrated to the New World in search of religious freedom. Their entire early experience was a constant struggle for survival. To the colonists the New World was their way out of poverty and into the
There were various reasons why the American Colonies were established. The three most important themes of English colonization of America were religion, economics, and government. The most important reasons for colonization were to seek refuge, religious freedom, and economic opportunity. To a lesser degree, the colonists sought to establish a stable and progressive government.
There were many reasons why the colonists came to North America. One reason was because they wanted to escape King Edward so they could fallow freely their own religion and to seek riches. Also the Puritans came to North America because they wanted a lace to practice their religion without fear of the government. Also that the religion they wanted to practice was considered more fundamentalist than what was being practiced from where they came. the English colonies were successful in North America was because the British tried so many times to get more money the colonists got mad and boycotted- refuse to use-the British goods. Then the British government kind of loosened their restraints and gave the American colonists some freedom.
Economic concerns of the British caused the colonization of British North America. Such economic concerns included the opportunity to acquire gold, silver, a North American waterway that would lead directly to China and the Indies, and the prospect of countering Spain's dominance in North America (Boorstin et al. 34). In addition to these economic reasons for colonization, the English were also seeking to obtain the essential "raw materials" in America that they had been previously buying from other European countries for exorbitant amounts of money and gold (Boorstin et al. 34). Great Britain also sought to solve other economic problems through American colonization. For example, England needed to replenish some of its diminishing materials and assets, generate another "market" to export its cargo and merchandise, maintain its powerful navy and "merchant marine" through business with new American colonies, and to provide a new place for the unemployed to settle rather than escalating populace/crime and the economic burden in its own cities (Boorstin et al. 34).
After the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus, European Nations competed in a race against one another to claim pieces of the new land. Before Columbus found this land, the sea separating the New World from Europe seemed endless, and mundane. The Europeans were only interested in the land to the East. But with the New World as a new hat thrown into the ring, the Europeans tossed aside their old toy to go play with a new one. This time period of conquest over the New World was known as the Age of Exploration, and by the 1700s, they kept their pickings. A New World meant more land to build homes and plant crops, and more money to be earned by buying out new houses and selling new crops grown in foreign soil. Spain claimed Mexico, and the Southwest portions of what would be known as America. France got their hands on most of present-day Canada, as well as Louisiana. The Dutch set foot on land they called New Amsterdam, however, The English, who had settled their first colony in Jamestown, Virginia, drove the Dutch out and claimed New Amsterdam for themselves, later renaming it New York. The English claimed more land as time passed, and eventually they had formed 13 different colonies in the Eastern part of America. The English Colonies were separated into 3 different regions. The New England Colonies (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire), the Middle Colonies (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware), and the Southern Colonies (Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia). The New England Colonies were the earliest of the 3 regions, founded by English Settlers seeking religious freedom. The Middle Colonies were also founded by settlers seeking religious freedom. The Southern Colonies,...
During the 17th century, Europeans had unquestionably come to North America to stay, a fact that signaled major changes for the people of both hemispheres. At first, the English sought to benefit from the New Found land by trading across the continents, but later many English people decided to migrate to North America. Unlike other Europeans, the English transferred their society and politics to their new environment. The New England colonies and the Chesapeake colonies were both English colonies but each had different factors that influenced them.
