Kennedy signed the equal pay act it has been illegal to pay men and women working in the same job equal pay. However even after 55 years women still do not receive equal pay. This article talks about the history of pay for women in the U.S, Facts and statistics on how much a women makes, why women receiving unequal pay is a problem, and how we can solve this problem. History of pay for women in the USA The history of equal pay for women begins in 1869 when a letter was written to the editor of the New York Time. The letter asked why female government representatives were paid less than their male peers.
“Very few persons deny the justice of the principle that equal work should command equal pay without regard to the sex of the laborer,” the author of the letter wrote. “But it is one thing to acknowledge the right of a principle and quite another to practice it.” The author of the letter also said that men were being paid 2 times the amount women were “Many of these women are now performing the same grade of work at $900 per annum for which men receive $1800. Most of them, too, have families to support; being nearly all either widow or orphans made by the war.” Later that year a decision was made by the house of representatives to make sure that female government employees got paid the same as men. However when the law passed in 1870 it was dulled down. Another very important part in the history of pay for women is that by 1911 a lot of progress had been made teachers were started receiving equal pay as well. Finally in 1963 John F. Kennedy passed the equal pay act which stated that giving men and women unequal pay was now illegal in the US. In different states women get paid differently. For example in California women get paid 10-15% less than men and in Wyoming women get paid 31-35% less than men. Immigrants get paid even less. Why women not receiving equal pay is a problem There are lots of problems with women not receiving equal pay. First, It hurts there moral and brings them down. It prevents them from rising in their career and reaching the top because they do not think they can do it. I mean have you ever seen a woman president? Second they wouldn’t have enough money to support their familys as 40% of children have single mothers and that would hurt women in low wage jobs the most. Less money can also lead to poverty as they might not have enough money to buy a house. Plus when they are old and they retire they would not have enough savings to get medical support and such. What people are doing to fix this problem Acording to the NWLC some things we can do to fix this problem are strengthen our equal pay laws, allow women to go to better paying jobs,and lift up the wages of women in low-wage jobs so they single mothers will also be able to support they kids.

Considering many men went off to war, so many women took over the jobs they use to have. However, when men returned from the war, they took their jobs back. Companies who hired women before stopped and only hired men. Even the newspapers had a separate listing of jobs for men and women. Both genders would work the same jobs, but would be paid on a different pay scale. Women fought for their rights of equal pay by organizing marches and protests in the nation 's capital. Therefore, the government proposed the Equal Pay Act, which was a victory for women once again. The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, the Equal Pay Act required employers to give men and women equal pay for the same work. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
On June 10, 1963 President John F. Kennedy signed the historic Equal Pay Act of 1963 into federal law. The act was one of the first federal antidiscrimination laws to address specifically the gender wage gap, it became illegal to pay men and women a different salary if they are at the same place doing similar work. After the Equal Pay Act, it took forty four years for the gap to close from fifty nine cents to eighteen cents. Although the act was signed over fifty years ago, the gender wage gap remains a prominent issue throughout America. On average women’s pay is seventy seven cents of a man’s one dollar, with an even wider gap for women of color. African American women earn sixty four cents to a white man’s one dollar, while Latina and Hispanic women only earn fifty four cents. While the gap is not as bad as it once was, at the rate it is going now, less than half a penny a year, the will gap not close for another 124 years. Equal Pay Day is a national movement working towards closing this wage gap between men and women.
When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1).
Since the nineteen twenties women of America have been considered equal citizens of our country, and had to work hard in order to obtain that equality in the workplace. One may reconsider the success rate of females in America, and if they really have made it as far as popular belief may have it. Of course, American women can vote, can hold office, and they can work, which is more than can be said for some countries. But do both sexes really hold equal in the workplace regarding manners of salary and respect? Does the corporate executive world really take women seriously? These are some of the arguments made by women today that do not feel that they are being treated equal in the workplace. On the other hand, those who believe women are treated equally usually reason that differences balance out in statistics, things such as majority of teachers are women, and women also have a hold on the entrepreneur side of businesses. The voices that are still screaming come from an audience who feel that women still have a long way to go before achieving a status of total equality.

Once stance taken is that women are specifically targeted and that they are payed less than the average income of a man who has the same education and who works in the same profession while the other stance states that men and women are paid as close to equal as possible considering the careers taken. Do women deserve equal Prize Money and why? It is outrageous that today women are getting paid 77 cents to a men’s dollar for doing the same job every day and it’s disappointing that women are getting less prize money for winning the same championship sports etc, tennis, football and other sports because of the definition of a women’s physique. From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.

It is very important to be concerned about the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women make 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
