Today there seems to be only one-way people identify the quality, and class of clothing. The way people do so, is by looking at the brand name of the product. Not only does the brand have persuasion on the class and quality of clothing, but it also causes a separation in social groups. Branded clothing makes an argument because the people of our society would rather pay more for an item that’s been with branded with a respected and well know company rather than buying cheaper non-branded clothing. The clothing people wear tends to reflect on their social status, or class. Overall the three things brands do, is change the value and cost, perception of others around you. The clothes people wear reflect their social status. If people wear brands of clothing that are known to be popular and expensive they will be looked upon highly in society. The suit identifies people such as businessmen and leaders of huge corporations that are seen walking around wearing designer suits. They are perceived highly in society because these brands of clothing are expensive and this earns them respect socially because they look classy. Whereas if people wear clothing that isn’t branded or not very well known they won’t be perceived very highly in society and may not receive any sort of social status. This can be someone who just wears casual looking clothing, all day, which can include of not very well known brands. In society this person is perceived as average or someone with not a lot of money because he or she doesn’t wear known and expensive brands. People are often deceived by some famous brands, which they will buy as useless commodities to feel they are distinctive. People require brands to experience the feeling of being special. People spend their money to have something from famous brands, like a bag from Coach or Louis Vuitton which they think they need, yet all that is just people’s wants. Steve McKevitt claims that people give more thought on features or brands when they need to buy a product, “It might even be the case that you do need a phone to carry out your work and a car to get around in, but what brand it is and, to a large extent, what features it has are really just want” (McKevitt, 145), which that means people care about brands more than their needs. Having shoes from Louis Vuitton or shoes that cost $30 it is designed for the same use.
Fashion in the 21th century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Fashion has for the past century been, and is still today, used as an indicator of social change and progress, as it changes with the social norms of the society and the political changes of the world (Finkelstein 3).
It is perpetuated by the way wealth, power, and prestige are distributed and passed on from one generation to the next
The display of luxury signifies individual power and achievements. The manner which people dress reflects economic, political, social standing and self worth. Christian Dior quoted “it seems to me that women and men instinctively yearn to exhibit themselves”. Luxury in the fashion industry is usually defined in elements as: silk, gold, silver, and precious stones. Luxury products are usually identifiable through exceptional quality and high aesthetic appeal and value, and often belong to the range of products which can be clearly identified either through logo, brand name or design elements. The central features of a luxury brand are: perceived exclusivity; well recognised brand identity; high levels of brand awareness and strong sales and customer patronage.
For example, if people saw me wear Concords, they would categorize me as being into basketball or hip hop. It is also mostly guys who are wearing basketball shoes that notice my shoes. Therefore, it makes me feel masculine and makes me feel like I belong to the basketball or hip hop culture, but at the same time, I feel like I do not belong to a certain group. Thus, fashion is different in ethnics group, gender, and class because it serves to unite people or to establish a separation from other groups. There are many reasons why we choose to wear a particular article or style of clothing. Many of us consider our choice in clothing as an extension of our identity. While many others pick items from their wardrobe that reflect their current mood. There are also many times when we choose to dress a certain way in anticipation of being in a particular social setting. Even people who don’t seem to bother with matching clothes or wearing a designer label or walk around wearing clothes that are torn and dirty, are making a statement. What remains to be examined is whether or not there is a clear relationship between the clothing we wear and our social interactions.
Purchasing brand-name clothing can be extremely costly. Imagine this. There are two men named Luke and Gary who are looking for a navy blue dress shirt to wear to an event that they will be attending that evening. However, Luke went to TJ Max, and Gary went to Nordstrom. The shirts that they found were of a similar quality, however Luke saved much more money by going to TJ Max. Now why would someone pay that much money just to wear brand-name pieces? Also, because many brand-name companies don’t have clothes that will mix-and-match, with clothes from other companies, a person invested in brand-name clothing has to purchase more of those extremely expensive outfits. There are some people who believe that if they have the money to waste then why don’t they spend it on the brand-name clothing that they would like to wear. What these people don’t realize is that there are much better causes out there. While they are out there extravagantly spending their money, there are children in Africa who were born homeless and sick and need help.
Sparkly tops, cozy pants; we never know where they come from. Maybe a kid made them under horrible conditions, you never know. My mom used to buy a lot of Gap clothes, but during 2005 she stopped. I was little so I didn’t understand, but my oldest sister did. Some rumors were going around that Gap made kids work. They forced them to produce clothing , only gaining one cent per month, they were paid less than adults. Kids were sewing and packaging the clothes. When my sister became an adolescent she started getting picky about clothing. She always wanted to dress like everyone, and the brand trendy new handbag of year was part of it. Living in Paris during a part of her teen years made her very picky and critical over how people were dressed. Paris is known for being a very influential city on fashion. I shop a lot, and Gallerie Lafayette is one of my favorite places. They have some very famous designer brands, and some very expensive prices too. On Christmas, all of Paris’s shop windows were decorated with moving dolls, created by Karl Lagerfeld. When I shop for outfits, I never know where they come from. Despite the fact I can’t know who made it, I can still know the history behind it.With all the things I know, I hope my presentation will turn out great. Learning about this topic more deeply will also help in life. At first, I didn’t what topic to choose, when Fashion popped out of my head I was very ecstatic. Fashion can be defined as a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette and socialising, or the conventional usage in dress and manners, whereas clothing is defined as garments collectively or something that covers. If fashion and clothing were abolished there would be no room for individuality, the world’s population would be uniform. There also would be a loss of the distinctions between social classes, which was most predominant in the 18th century but is still present today. However fashion being abolished would have little impact on tribal and classless societies as it does not exist there. The abolishment of fashion and clothing would also change the dynamics of the social world and social relationships.
