Journalist, David H. Freedman, and author of How Junk Food Can End Obesity, dedicates an article to address the situation regarding the wholesome food movement. In his writings, he points out that although this new phenomenon brags about healthier foods being made available, there are some faulty aspects within the cause. Many loyal fast-food customers are put off by the anouncement of healthier menu items, while health fanatics are raving about restaurants catering to their needs. There are two types of consumers in the world of food; both of which are blind to the opposing sides’ work ethics.
Michael Pollan and David Freedman are two reputable authors who have written about different types of food and why they are healthy or why they are damaging to our health. Michael Pollan wrote “Escape from the Western Diet” and David Freedman wrote “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”. Imagine Pollan’s idea of a perfect world. Everything is organic. McDonald’s is serving spinach smoothies and Walmart is supplying consumers with raw milk. The vast majority of food in this world consists of plants grown locally, because almost everyone is a farmer in order to keep up with supply and demand. How much does all this cost? What happened to all the food that is loved just because it tastes good?
Published In his article “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”, David Freedman begins by talking about how misinformed people are about wholefood restaurants and stores. These stores are run by so-called health food experts. Freedman makes himself distinguishable himself from the position of Michael Pollan and his adherents. His adherents are known as Pollanites. They are the people who believe that processed food is the reason we have health and obesity issues. He brings up the phrase small elite minority to talk about how Pollanites think they are better than everyone else. Throughout the article Freedman compares how the Pollanites view the masses, to how everyone else views it. The way to fix the problem according to Pollan and his followers
Governments would just be continuing to cause problems because another huge problem in America is there are already way too many people without jobs. When going to the store to get a soda, is there really much to think about when drinking sweetened goods has become a part of an everyday lifestyle. Why would someone suddenly put a tax on something which so many have loved and became addicted to. If there was a tax put on everything people have come to love there would be a huge tax for everything. Bittman does not think that putting a tax on sugar sweetened beverages would affect the jobs of people because he believes it would get made up by the selling of their other products. However it is important to realize that most places would not be passing this until 2018. Although, people really do need to realize what these sweetened products are doing and the reason why taxing for these goods is not looking so
It is sad. People from all races and backgrounds are obese. In a recent survey done at Henry Ford College, 43 percent of students were overweight. Whether it is because they do not follow a healthy diet or they inherited it from their parents. Being overweight is correlated with lacking exercise or physical activity and not watching what is on the plate. Obesity can cause many illnesses, including diabetes, which is very common. As the debate whether soda tax should take effect arises, critics say that the tax will help those with obesity-related illnesses. What about exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle? These two factors cannot be forgotten knowing they are the most important. Americans have consumed 12 percent of soda and become less active since 1970. A soda tax aims to stop consumers from buying soda to help those who are obese. This will not be effective. Therefore a soda tax will not be good public policy.
Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent American obesity.
Policymakers forget to actually offer solutions, something that we should be working on. Many experts recommend decreasing the amounts of the foods we eat. Food and beverage companies have introduced thousands of healthier alternatives. Consumers need to learn more about healthy diets. A helpful task would allow the government to implement a tax on food that is considered unhealthy. The financially disadvantaged would be less inclined to indulge in fast food dinning. According to the article “Mexico’s Soda Tax is working. The US Should Learn from It” Berkeley, California, became the first city in the United States to pass a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. In 2013, Mexico’s congress passed a one-peso-per-liter tax on sugary beverages that
Sodas are the most consumed beverages in the United States of America, the average american will consume forty-four gallons per year. Currently sixty-eight percent of americans are considered obese or over weight in the United States. Although soda is not the main cause for this as well as other health issues but it is a big part of it. The ban on soda is a good thing because it will help decrease obesity americans, it will help decrease bad behavior in children, and it will help decrease depression in teens.
Obesity has become a major health concern for many and needs to be tackled head on. Is fast food to blame for the growing obesity in America? Obesity affects more than half of the population. With so many Americans gaining weight and so many health problems the matter has to be addressed. There is no one would argue that obesity, especially the children is considered a problem. In any case the cause of childhood obesity is fought about daily. Many people will say that fast food restaurants are to blame. In my research, I will explain the argument that who is to blame for the obesity in America: fast food restaurants or common laziness from the obese society.
Many people eat fast food due to their low prices. Advertisement greatly inspires Americans to try the latest burgers or meals. It is known that anything that is not good for consumers is more likely to result in an increase in taxes. Raising the tax makes a certain product increase in price so it will be less affordable for the consumer to consume and more likely to stop purchasing it, and it will decrease the chances for the consumer to suffer health problems or deceases. Higher tax on unhealthy food can benefit America and it’s proven that it will
When I was a kid, I loved running down to the convenience store with my friends to grab a Pepsi or Coke. My childhood was compromised of the satisfaction of playing for hours on end outside and at the end of the day sitting around with friends drinking sodas and eating random snacks. As kids, no one thinks about the health complications involved with what we eat or drink because…it just doesn’t seem to matter then. The older and maturer we become, the more we start to over analyze and critique the amount and types of food we put into our bodies. Drinking beverages of any sort is a very important aspect to everyone 's life and can even be a bonding experience. For Americans, sugary drinks seem to be a very important aspect when eating any meal throughout the day. Many people seem to think that adding an excise tax will solve the big
