Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Sexual harassment towards women is something that has been around for decades, many cases dismissed, many rapists go unpunished. Recently in the news you will hear about an idea known as “victim blaming” where it was the victim’s fault she was raped, and the rapist just simply received the wrong idea, therefore letting him off the hook and leaving her feeling helpless, unsafe, and less trustworthy of our justice system.

Out of every 1,000 rapes, 994 perpetrators will walk free. Only 310 rapes are reported to the police, 57 reports lead to arrest, 11 cases get referred to prosecutors, 7 cases lead to felony conviction and 6 rapists will be incarcerated. If those numbers do not represent a …show more content…

Due to the lack of ability to ask a simple question there should be a more strict punishment when situations like this end up in the courtroom. Sexual abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time, leaving many women to live in fear when traveling or simply walking into a Walmart alone. Seeing that rapists get slim to no punishment at all doesn’t put fear into anyone which makes it less likely for them to refrain from committing the crime. Especially when academic success or a clean looking reputation/ plan for a good future is something that can shorten their punishment, if any. Creating more and/ or stricter laws could make the numbers of how many sexual assaults occur plummet. After the assault victims feel powerless, depressed, suicidal , and anxious. Why would anybody want people to go through this? A stricter law can lower the amount of depression, fear, and suicide of women all over America due to experiencing sexual assault and people are still against it. “The only reason sexual assault is a problem is because we don’t expect it, cause that is totally creepy, weird and awkward. If we would expect it coming, we would get used to it” says anonymous. Personally seeing these articles makes me scared to reject somebody, because you’ll never know how they will handle it, until it’s too late. An article was written about 14 women who were brutally attacked in 2016 for rejecting men but this particular story stuck out to me “It was "easy" for Christopher O'Kroley to kill Caroline Nosal, his coworker at a Madison, Wisconsin, grocery store and the object of his unrequited affection. He said so himself earlier this month, when he was arrested for fatally shooting Nosal because she rejected his romantic advances. He reportedly "wanted more" from their relationship and she turned him down.” What sticks out is the words “he wanted more” and then it was implied that she did not, and he killed her.
