LeBron James made $71 million last year. That’s way more than the U.S. President! Actually, many professional athletes get paid millions of dollars. Some people think that these athletes shouldn’t get paid so much. Others think that this is all well-earned money. To me, athletes are just here to entertain, but they make way more than they need. And they don’t need to make millions if they can still get lucrative jobs after they retire. Athletes are basically just entertainment. They don’t do much; all they really do is just run around on fields or courts and toss a ball around. People crowd stadiums and pay loads of money to see professional athletes play a game. They spend years of their life traveling and competing in games. Athletes make
way more than they need. They play games for a living and make more than nurses, firefighters, and government officials. Many athletes make more money in a year than a family makes in 40 years! Most athletes live in huge mansions and have copious amounts of money left over. Athletes don’t need to make millions every year if they can still get lucrative jobs after they retire. Most retired athletes become coaches, sports commentators, or public speakers. Some professional athletes even have their own merchandise were they earn money from, too. Yes, professional athletes can get hurt. However, there are lots of scary and dangerous jobs that don’t get paid, in their lifetime, half as much as some athletes do in just a few years. Athletes entertain, earn way more than many other people, and still can get money after they retire. Athletes do deserve money, but do they deserve millions more than all of us?
Tyson Hartnett of The Huffington Post once said “Even with any type of scholarship, college athletes are typically dead broke.” This quote regards a tremendous controversy that has been talked about for the past few years. He talks about whether or not college athletes should be paid for their duties. Despite the fact college athletes are not professionals, they should most certainly be paid for playing for their respective schools due to many factors. These factors include health risks and the income bring in for their colleges as well as to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Isn't it amazing how one little controversial question can cause so much drama? Take the NCAA for instance. Within recent years the question of weather NCAA athletes should be paid or not has arisen and caused them some unwanted attention. Many coaches and sports enthusiast have been interviewed on their opinion. “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses,” (Mitchell). “There has been major discussion recently if college athletes should or shouldn't be paid while they are in school. The first thing opponents say is, "They're already getting a scholarship! That is more than anybody else! Don't be greedy!”(Hartnett). These are just two men’s opinions, but no one needs to give his or her opinion any longer. The answer to this question is unmistakably clear. NCAA athletes do not need to be paid because they get to go to college for free, their living expenses are paid for, and there would not be a fair way to choose which teams are paid and which are not.
Emil Zatopek once said “An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head.” This quote applies to every college athlete. The quote means that an athlete may not be getting paid in college, but if they put in the hard work and dedication they can make it to the big leagues. College football is the second most watched sport in America. And the athletes playing the game do not even get paid a penny to play the game. In the sports world. this has been talked about for an extremely long time. College athletes put their body on the line for injury. They put their grades in on the line because of the hours they put on the court, or field (Keolanui). They also sell their apparel at the game and at stores and they get no money at all (Keolanui).
The argument that college athletes should be paid as been ongoing for many years. With the growing rise of college athletes’ popularity in the media, many people believe that college athletes should be paid, but they do not see the negative effects of the payments. The payments of college athletes could cause their price of enrollment to rise, forcing many students to transfer to other universities or not attend college at all. It may also cause fan ratings to drop because the relatability factor would disappear. Along with university budget cuts appearing, academic scholarships and athletic scholarships would disappear. College athletes should not be paid because college athletes are students and not professional players, the deep connection
Every day, people around the world complain about professional athletes salaries. Even though the top athletes make millions of dollars every year, the majority of athletes do not make any more than the average working class citizen. There are also many risks along with the job, and job security is very unstable. Expenses and taxes also limit the amount of money an athlete makes. Tax rates are extremely high for the men and women who participate in professional sports.
For some athletes money is not an issue. Many, including Griffey and Jay Buhner, defer portions of their salaries to make room for other players the team needs to win. Others, just willingly get paid less than market value for the same reason. As generous as these players are, some still argue professional athletes are selfish and greedy, when that is not the case at all. Multi-million dollar athletes deserve every cent they get paid.
Each year the NCAA (National Collegiate Athlete Association) earns billions in revenue across all college sports, bringing in more money than many professional sports and even many of the countries biggest public companies (Top 10 Reasons college athletes should be paid). However, the student athletes who are the reason behind these earnings do not see any of it in the form of a salary. College athletes should be paid an annual salary due to the countless hours they spend playing their sport while maintaining academic standards, the regulations preventing them from getting a job, and the astonishing amount of money they generate for their school.
ESPN college basketball analyst and former Duke basketball player Jay Bilas once said, “For what reason do we limit athletes, and athletes only, in this multibillion-dollar business?”. The reason for his strong opinion is because there has been an ongoing discussion on whether or not college athletes should receive compensation for the sports that they play. The NCAA’s justification for why student athletes aren’t paid is that they believe that the real compensation is benefitting from academics and being able to receive major professional sports contracts for their efforts. “Rather than push college athletics further and further from academics, we need to bring it closer.”, said NCAA president Mike Emmert, who backs up the explanation set up by the NCAA. While many still consider college
Team sports like soccer or basketball and individual sports are extremely popular worldwide. Famous sportsmen and sportswomen have statutes similar to Hollywood celebrities, and their wages are high. However, no matter how well they play, all of them have once been amateurs; in that way, college athletes don’t have much difference from professionals. At the same time, the NCAA prohibits college athletes to be compensated monetarily for their effort, which is definitely unfair. A multitude of reasons can be listed for paying college athletes.
The salary of professional athletes are always being debated on whether they make too much or it 's the right amount they should make. Some of the athletes do make millions and millions of dollars, but there is some that don 't. Anyways in order to make the millions first an athletes must make it to the professional level. For example in soccer only 1.4% of people actually make it to the professional level. So the rest of the people make it for other sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and others. To be considered a professional athlete you must be getting payed to play a sport. They will be playing for a league and even tournaments and get rewarded with more money if they win. Some may think an athlete
"Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of ones work" ("Professional AthletesÉ"). In today's society, one will be paid more if their job is more economically important. However, teaching is one of the most economically important occupations because our future economy relies on the education of its youth, yet teachers are paid much less than the average professional athlete. The U.S President makes decisions that affect our economy and yet he only makes 250,000 dollars a year (Turner). Professional athletes do not play near as vital role in the economy as the president, but their salaries reflect otherwise. These games are supposed to be played for fun, not for millions of dollars.
First, do these athletes deserve such high pay? Indeed some players do deserve it because of how much time they spend working to get better for themselves and not just the money. It depends on how the athlete may be doing in order to get the pay, say one player just sits around and doesn’t practice waiting on these high salaries, while others are out practicing hard and not getting paid as much as the person
Most importantly, athletes are living luxury lives, while many people in Asia and Africa are ravenous. Athletes work extremely hard to win each and every game they play, but they do not work as hard as the community around them, therefore, athletes should not make as much cash as they do today.
Professional athletes back in the day used to play for fun I think the money is taking the fun from the game. Some athletes are so focused on the money they forget they have to at least enjoy themselves while they are doing what they are doing. I think the people that actually do all the hard work like firefighters and doctors she be the ones getting paid like that. Doctors have to go through a lot of schooling to get where they are at and some professional athletes didn’t even go to college they went straight to the league and started earning more money than doctors do already. Now let me go back to some reasons why they deserve what they are paid. Professional athletes spend a lot of time practicing. They work at least forty hours a week. They have to go over and remember a lot of playbooks. Some people say that professional athletes are actually underpaid. Take LeBron James for example they paid LeBron twenty three million to play almost a hundred games last season. The sports industry is only getting bigger and bigger which means they are making more and more money. People say that professional athletes don’t work they just play. I’m here to tell you that they are wrong. It takes
First athletes give money to family and charities. Next a lot of money goes to family and charities and they don’t even make money when their injured. They only make money when they play, then they make their family's life easier by giving them money. Finally they also give money to charities which leaves them with almost half their money. Athletes give supply money for family and charities.
