Why Do People Use Self-Driving Cars?

“Self-driving cars are the natural extension of active safety and obviously something we should do” -Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors. 1925 was where the buildup of autonomous vehicles started. In this time, a radio company named Houdina Radio Control made a radio controlled car. It drove its way through the streets of Milwaukee and New York by itself. It was later named “Phantom Auto.” Ever since then, other car companies took a shot at making autonomous vehicles. Each time they did it, through trial and error, they made something new each time. For example, in 1958, Chrysler made the first car with cruise control, the Imperial. Cruise control is even used in regular cars, which is a huge step towards the autonomous car dream. Americans spend about an hour each day commuting to work. This amount of time can be used on other productive things. People can email on their phones, work on their papers, or even take a nap in the car before they arrive at their destination. This could better their focus and productivity in work, since they already got some stuff done beforehand. For instance, according to the research of Morgan Stanley Blue Papers from analysts, economists, and strategists, they state, “Productivity gains would come to $507 billion annually in the US, where Americans spend some 75 billion hours a year driving. Instead of staring at the blacktop, worrying about the right exit ramp, wondering whether the incoming call or text is important, commuters are free to catch up on work... [and] more sleep” (Author Unknown, 2015). In other words, the time people have in their car can be used for getting their work done. The evidence proves that autonomous cars can help with humans to become more productive. This shows that autonomous cars should be used more often because people can get more work done in the times that they are in the car, waiting to get to their destination. This matters because this can prevent people from stressing out from the amount of work they have to do when they can do it in the car. Even catching up on sleep is productive because then people would have …show more content…

Car pollution are one of the most deadliest sources of air pollution, in which they kill 53,000 people every year. Some of these deaths include children, with developing body systems that can’t handle this type of air. Unfortunately, some these kids can’t go to a hospital and would have to carry the heavy burden of suffering through their lungs for the rest of their lives. To illustrate, In the Huffington Post, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island states, “Rhode Island works hard to reduce air pollution in our communities. We passed laws to prohibit cars and buses from idling their engines and to retrofit school buses with diesel pollution controls. But there is only so much a single state can do, particularly against out-of-state pollution” (Whitehouse, 2007). In other words, other states besides Rhode Island should make an effort in reducing air pollution from vehicles. This proves regular cars are one of the reasons why many lives are shortened from air pollution. However, this connects on why we should use autonomous cars more often, and that is because these cars are eco-friendly. We are in an era where self-driving cars are either electric or aren’t hard on gas. If we put humans into the equation, they might use too much gas because of how much pressure they are putting on
