Hintsa Girmay ENGL 1301- 73480 Essay-1 Observation Essay (working draft) Why do people go to the mall? I’m sitting on a bench at the Irving Mall. I can smell cinnamon, hints of coffee, cleaning liquids, and other fragrances that I can’t quite make out. I’m wondering why people go to the mall. I know that it’s supposed to be a place to buy things. That’s the whole point isn’t it? To shop? However, as I look around, I notice that a good portion of the people I see, including couples, teens, families, and groups of different subcultures, aren’t even carrying any shopping bags. They appear to be here for other reasons. One couple I saw earlier were holding hands, appearing to just be walking around for the sake of being together. I’m not sure what their reason is for being here, but I wonder if they even bought anything today? The point I would I stop at the Subway and order a six inch meatball sub with extra cheese and a coke. Sitting down nearby, I take a bite. It’s delicious! Of course, in my hunger, I didn’t allow it to cool very well and can feel a slight sting on the inside of my mouth on the top. I quickly drink some pop to cool off the burn. Other people appear to be enjoying their food as well. Some have Mexican, some Chinese, and some dishes I can’t tell from the angle I’m currently sitting in. This leads me to another conclusion about that some people come to eat on the malls. While there are probably many other reasons people like to go to the various malls across the United States, this short essay has examined just a few reasons people come to the mall other than simply to shop. As I exit, I slide my hand down the smooth metal railing that leaves the mall. It’s cold, but I can’t seem to pull my hand away. It’s also just kind of fun to do. I decide that the next time I come back, I want to get a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s. Who knows, though? Maybe next time I’ll go back simply to mall
