God has put it on my heart many times even when I tried to run away and chose another profession. I was always scared away because of the pay. I grew up poor and never had anything and was always told to get a big buck job for I can change that. Naturally, I would go on google and look at six figure jobs. I would proclaim my new profession about for couple months, but always lost interest. I can and could get a degree in many things and excel that was not the problem. God made me realize time after time my gift of people skills and how I can save many people just by telling my story and if not more importantly listening to theirs. I talked to many people who went through depression and suicidal attempts. I learned just by being there and listening was enough to help them go through day by day. I continued to live my life the way I wanted to and not the way God intended for me to live. Then, I realize what I was doing with my life I was wasting. I had abrupt awakening. My third friend had just got killed from senseless killing in Chicago. His name was Jesus Martinez, he was not a gang banger, drug dealer, or a criminal he was a young man with goals to escape the city life. This is when I realized I need to do something with my life and get far away from this toxic environment. I was way to used to stuff like this happening. While my childhood, had much of my decision to study social work, I had to make amends with my past, for I may have moved forward and not stayed stationary. Even though our conversation relied on a pen and pieces of paper, we had tight relationship. Unfortunately, my aunt split from his husband spontaneously due to my uncle’s adultery. After that, aunt lost her interest in everything, even making communication with their children. She persistently felt anxious and got hallucination lately. When I was in high school, my aunt was diagnosed as suffering from depression, a seriously one. For quite a long period, my mother stayed at Macau to accompany with my aunt. At that time, I wrote many letters to her on the grounds that I believed words could deliver positive energy. Subsequently, my letters seemed to cut ice with my aunt. She told me that reading my letters could ease her anxiety and enhanced her to stay positive in a day.

I will also be staying out of legal trouble so I don’t jeopardize getting a scholarship because if I don’t go to college, I can’t complete this goal.
The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
Social work was not a profession that I had considered prior to this year, but, after I researched it, I quickly learned that it was the perfect fit for me. I feel that this is exactly where the Lord wants me to be and I know that this is the right path for my life. It is a cliché to say that the reason I want to be a social worker is because I want to help people, but there is truth to that. However, there is much more to it than just helping people. I want to make life easier for people by connecting them with appropriate resources, educational opportunities, and/or support. I want to be able to use the skills I have to better the lives of others, ease their burdens, and allow them to live a better life.
Reflecting back on my childhood, I always had a vivid imagination. I would imagine being a doctor, lawyer, or even the first female president of the United States of America. But, I never considered a career in social work. Over the years I realized that I like helping people, but my thoughts of what I wanted to be were indifferent. In high school my counselor had me do a career survey to see what may have interest me. The most common choices were Nursing, Teaching, or becoming a Social Worker. So I went on the Internet and researched as much as I could on each career choice. Nevertheless, at that point of my life I thought that Nursing was the best career choice for me.
I became interested in social work when my dear mother unexpectedly got sick, and the hospital diagnosed her with stage four cancer. The doctors told us she only had a few months to live. I decided against the nursing home option and instead brought my mom home from the hospital to take care of her by myself. The hospital and hospice helped me by sending the registered nurses, the home health care nurses and the social workers in my home to help me provide the best care for my ailing mother. Consequently, I devoted all my time to caring and helping my mom. This experience was my first encounter with a social worker in my life, and I was impressed by the social worker kindness, care and compassion. Immediately, after the passing of my mom, I decided to go back to school to study and work toward becoming a social worker myself.
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. Either way, I feel like I will be doing a great thing. As a professional, I want to help many people with their problems. I will encourage their opinions and ideas as well as help them form plans to better their
