Screen time for children should be limited, because it can cause fragmented attention spans and mental fatigue. This, in turn, causes said children to be less alert during school, resulting in low test scores, or in the case of preschoolers, the inability to fully complete a given task. Obesity can be connected to excessive TV watching, as well. It has also cut into children's "play" time, resulting in less and less creativity in children. All in all, too much screen time can be pretty bad for a person, and solutions to these problems must be found. According to scientific journels, light from screens confuses a persons body clock, which in turn confuses their sleeping time. As TV viewing ofter involves sitting on the sofa staring at a screen without moving, this happens quite often, unless it were to be limited to only a few hours at a time, with breaks in between for exercise. Play is importent for kids, as it helps develop emotional health, imagination, and problem solving. This is an argumentative essay to contradict the argument found in “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time” written by Danah Boyd. In that article social media is consider just a medium of communication and does not have any real serious consequences in users life. However, there is evidence that supports that new technologies because, in short, can create addiction in users if is used irresponsibly.
Before the time of 1947, the number of homes in the United States that had television sets were measured in thousands, not everybody in the U.S had a television set. By the 1990s, at least 98 percent of Americans had a television set. Most of the TVs in that Americans had been on at least more than 7 hours a day. “The typical American spends (depending on the survey and the time of year) from two-and a half to almost five hours a day watching television.” (Stephens) It is so amazing how a television can bring more and more people in to watch TV, instead of engaging in other activities, such as being crafty, or reading, or going to the gym. A person that watches TV too much, hurts the human eye, also causes stress in the brain which causes headaches, and sometimes seizures. It is not healthy to watch TV; a human should only be watching TV for 30 minutes a day.
These research articles are giving us information about how to much screen time can cause children under the age of four to have developmental delays and language delays. And how we can control the amount of time our children are spending on electronics. And to maintain a healthy balance between sleep and physical activity.
While I see nothing wrong with screen time, I do believe that to much is a bad thing. With my children, I limit screen time to 1-2 hours a day for my 2 year old son and 2-4 hours for my 6 year old daughter. I didn't want to cut out screen time all together because I personally think it is a good way for kids to learn in some parts. My daughter has had bad social anxiety for many years now that has hindered her from making friends. I decided that it was time to do something about it. On one hand, too much time can cause a few problems with the younger ones. It can promote obesity in kids, making them unhealthy and more likely to die younger. More time on the screen can also influence the kids, making them mimic what they see on TV, raising a more disrespectful generation.
Television can disrupt our children’s education and creativity. Time is taking away from our children’s study. The kid’s attention span is smaller. Instead of concentrating on their own imagination, they are concentrating on others creativity. Despite all this negativity, television can be very beneficial. Children who watch educational programs have better math and verbal skills. High quality programs can provide our children with a well rounded education like history, science, humanities, religion, the environment, and much more.
I grew up with a lot of media devices around me so there was a lot of screen time for me and my siblings. I dont remember as far back as 2 years old but I've always rememberd being in front of a television screen or playing on a Leapfrog. That didn't stop anything though. My siblings and I still spent plenty of time enjoying the outdoors and doing other fun activities such as playing school when we were inside. Media devices didn't effect us in a negative way. So I feel that children should not be restricted from spending time in front of media screens. They shouldn't be because it reduces anger and fear, improves vocabulary in toddlers and older children, and it builds online relationships and offers chances for social and contact learning.
