Steroids in Sports Professional sports the industry worth billions that continues to grow at a rapid pace. “It is expected to reach $73.5 billion by 2019” (Heitner). Athletes competing in these sports earn hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for their actions every season. These competing athletes train countless hours to gain the smallest edge over their opponents. Some athletes turn to steroids in their search for an edge of the competition. Steroids are banned in professional sports for good reasons; such as; harmful mental and physical side effects and producing an unfair advantage to those taking them despite the risks. Fans of pro sports do not want to watch addicts compete which is how most steroid users end up. “Recent evidence suggests that long-time steroid abusers may experience the classic characteristics of addiction including, difficulty in stopping use and withdrawal symptoms” (Wadler). Fans will not support athletes with dangerously unstable tempers capable of snapping over the smallest comment. Nor will fans support athletes liable to collapse mid game due to their bodies giving out from the physical strain of preforming with toxic steroids weighing down their bodies. These things that fans would not support are exactly what athletes pumped full of steroids would bring to pro sports. In conclusion, professional sports are completely justified banning steroid use among athletes. With so many negative side effects and danger associated with steroid use and abuse its painfully obvious how horrible steroids are. There is no reason to allow steroids in pro sports now or ever.
