Can someone survive with no help from others, while competing alone? In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen is challenged to fight to the death against 23 other teenagers. However, this is not the beginning of Katniss’ struggle to survive. Katniss has to take care of, not only herself, but her family too. In The Hunger Games, Katniss discovers that people are too dependent on others to provide for them, that they cannot survive on their own. Survival is show The Hunger Games, through relationships, alliances, and human connections.
Alliances are one representation of depending on others. During the games, Katniss formed an alliance with Rue, which ultimately could have been the decision

maker of Katniss’ life or death. Katniss was trapped in a tree by the Career tributes, and it was Rue who saved her life. “If she’d wanted me dead, all she would have had to do was disappear from that tree without pointing out the tracker jacker nest” (208). This is one example of how Katniss had to depend on someone other than herself in order to survive. It is far easier to make good decisions and prevent bad situations when one has support from another, which was shown by this quote. Not only do people need others’ support in order to survive, but we help each other to survive in return. Due to Rue saving Katniss’ life, Katniss returned the favor by evenly splitting her resources with Rue. Katniss stated, “Before I leave, I make sure Rue’s well stocked with food and matches” (213). If Katniss hadn’t shared her resources with Rue, Rue most likely will have starved during the games. In addition to physical support, people often depend on others for mental support. Rue gave Katniss comfort, compassion, and courage, which helped Katniss stay motivated in the games. Also, Rue constantly reminded Katniss of Prim, her sister, who was at home waiting for her return from the games. “But I want Rue as an ally because she is a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? She reminds me of Prim” (201). Without the support from Rue during the games, Katniss would have been less motivated to compete/win and would have not made as good of choices, which would have led to Katniss’ death in the games. Dependence was a key to Katniss’ survival and was also expressed through her relationship with Peeta. Peeta is the male tribute from District 12, Katniss’ district of Panem. Throughout the entire series of events for The Hunger Games, Peeta showed loyalty to Katniss. Katniss depended on Peeta’s devotion, even though she felt as though she did not like what he was doing. When the Careers chased Katniss up a tree, Peeta was able to convince the Careers to leave her be, rather than killing her. “Finally I hear Peeta say harshly ‘Oh let her stay up there. It’s not like she’s going anywhere. We’ll deal with her in the morning’” (183). Katniss used Peeta’s dedication to her during this situation to make a plan to escape the Careers. If Peeta had not have bought Katniss some time, the Careers would have continued trying to kill Katniss in the tree. Another example of Katniss relying on Peeta was when Peeta helped Katniss hide from the Careers moments later. When Katniss dropped the tracker jacker nest on the Careers, Peeta went out of his way to tell Katniss to run, and distracted Cato and the Careers long enough for her to escape. “Sick and disoriented, I’m able to form only one thought: Peeta Mellark just saved my life” (194). This means that Katniss’ survival at this time was solely based off of depending on Peeta. From reaping day forward, Katniss also relied greatly on her mentor, Haymitch.
Haymitch contributed immensely to Katniss’ survival in the games by getting her wealthy sponsors, to send and provide what she needed, like food or medicine, during the games. “You have good sponsors she says longingly” (201).” Without Haymitch’s hard work and effort to get Katniss good sponsors, the gifts would not have been as helpful, or even sent to her, and Katniss would not have made it to where she did in the games. Another example of Katniss depending on Haymitch was how Haymitch sent messages to Katniss in the games. Haymitch sent vague, almost coded, messages to Katniss, and Katniss used her prior knowledge of Haymitch to understand what he was trying to say. “Maybe he is sending me a message. Then I know, there is only one reason Haymitch is withholding water from me. Because he knows I’ve almost found it” (169).This means that, from her time being mentored by Haymitch, Katniss was able to understand why Haymitch gave her a canteen but no water. Katniss’ dependence on Haymitch worked well for her during the games because she was able to keep her mind thinking and alert, and was able to get resources that she needed. Without being able to think like Haymitch, Katniss would have failed at surviving during the games, because she wouldn’t have been able to understand the hints and find necessary
resources. Gale is another character in which Katniss depended on for her own survival. Gale and Katniss are hunting partners, and Gale taught Katniss how to set up traps and snares for animals. “Good hunting partners are hard to find” (10). Gale is a one of a kind hunting partner whom Katniss bestows a lot of dependence for survival. Katniss used her knowledge from Gale to provide for her family and to catch game in the games. Katniss may not have even survived long enough to make it to the reaping if it were not for Gale’s guidance. Also, Gale continuously tested and improved Katniss’ skills out in the wild, and shared game with her. “Gale and I divide our spoils” (14).
In the novel The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen did many courageous things to help Peeta and try and keep both of them alive as long as possible. By doing so Peeta and her won the Hunger Games. She saved Prim from going into the Games and saved Peeta from dying during
Knowing how tough it would be for herself to lose her sister and how low her survival chances were coming out of a poor district such as her own District 12, she volunteered to participate. In other words, she went against the system to protect her loved one, in exchange she risked her’s. As the reader reads further in the book, he will realize how much Katniss will become more mature and will take more decision with her head. Due to her young rebellious teen mind when the reader discovers her, she takes more decisions with her heart rather than her head such as volunteering for the Hunger Games as a tribute. During the preparations to the Games, she encounters Haymitch
Do you enjoy reading about how to survive? Do you like to see children kill each other? The book, called “Hunger Games” has all the elements of survival. It is the perfect amount of survival and murder. Survival is key in the Hunger Games. You mainly need water, food, and shelter.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
It has often been said that there is nothing new under the sun. In this vein, authors across all literary genres often borrow themes and plot from the stories of long ago. Many of those authors choose to borrow from the rich mythology of the ancient Greeks. Suzanne Collins has been asked on numerous occasions where the idea for The Hunger Games originated. She readily admits that the characters and plot come from Greek mythology and more specifically, from Theseus and the Minotaur (Margolis 30). One familiar with both both stories can easily recognize the identical framework upon which each of these stories are built. Both Theseus and Katniss Everdeen, Collins’ heroine, volunteer to go into battle for their respective homelands, they both fight beasts of strange origin, and they are both brave in battle and emerge victorious, but it is the uniqueness of the characters that makes each story appropriate for the time period and audience to which it belongs. Collins modernizes the classic hero of Theseus by changing his gender, his motivations and altering his selfish personality, and by doing these things she creates a heroine that better resonates with today's audience of young adults.
In a location where life is at stake and a person must carry on as an individual for survival, is it possible to survive with no help from others? In the book Safekeeping, by Karen Hesse, the main character Radley Sherborne is in a place where the circumstances around her can result in imprisonment or even death. This is not the only time Radley had to fend herself, as in Haiti she had to care for the little beings and keep them alive as well as her herself due to poverty. In this novel Radley eventually figures out that an individual can only survive when dependant on someone else for something. This theme is presented through Radley’s understanding between the citizens of Brattleboro, her alliance with Julian and her relationship with Madame Seville.
The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). I will refrain from going any further just in case you have not read the book or have not seen the movie. In terms of soci...
Underestimated by her competitors, she was able to rise her way to the top by pulling out he secret weapons. Her hunting abilities, problem solving skills, and ability to think on the spot may not seem like super powers; however, they helped her survive and win the hunger games. Like Tris, Katniss also had a supernatural aid. Peeta was able to help Katniss make it through the games and they both made it out alive. Two to protagonists , Tris and Katniss, are alike in many ways and they both have the self-respecting, strong, smart, and independent qualities that one would expect to find in a
“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor” (Collins 19). Those were some of the last words Katniss heard before her sister’s name was called out for the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. Without thinking about anyone else, Katniss bravely accepted her sister’s spot in the games, a basic suicide mission. Katniss Everdeen had a vibrant personality, she was bold, intelligent, and a loving person. Her country, Panem, was controlled by President Snow, who let his country suffer in poverty. The capital was harsh and forces every district to send one boy and one girl to take part in the yearly Hunger Games. While a Disney Princess would yell for her
While reading the novel, “The Hunger Games”, written by Suzanne Collins, one could see without difficulty that a running theme flows through the writing. This theme being perseverance, the one thing that had allowed Katniss Everdeen, the main character that a reader follows during the events presented in the narrative, to live on and be crowned victor with her teammate, Peeta, a young man who ventures into the Hunger Games with Katniss. The theme of perseverance appears frequently as it is tied to every trait and skill of Katniss which includes the idea that she is persistent, caring, and resourceful when it comes to surviving in severe conditions similar to the Games. Every thought she has and every action that she performs drives her to
People go through many lengths to try to survive like they’ll do as much as they can in order to live no matter what they’ll have to do whatever it takes to be able to live. They have to know how to hunt or grow crops so they can find a way to live off that and they would also have to try to find a water source.
In The Hunger Games, the main character named Katniss finds her own way around the games. Katniss is not the person who likes to kill, she tried her best to kill as few people as possible, yet not get herself killed. Katniss hated the idea of the hunger games, so she wanted to try to find a way to stop it. Over the course of many books/movies, Katniss was able to go her own way and rebel against the rich people. She was unique, Katniss was able to get many people to respect her and help her fight against the rich. Like any other person, Katniss could have just followed the instructions given to her to be safe. However, this is not who she is, Katniss stuck up for what she believed in. She had a decision to defeat the rich and try to end the games, and she stuck to it. There are many movies and books in the arts that show people not following the crowd. So many show how people can be unique and be there own person. Any body can take there own road, just like
Poverty seems to be the ever present stain on every society. In the current world, poverty is common problem for both developed and undeveloped countries. The aspect of poverty is addressed in the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and plays out in how the characters interact with each other. Katniss Everdeen, one of the key characters in the story, is an example of how poverty shapes ones character and outlook towards life. Katniss and her family originate form District 12, which is the poorest district in the dystopian nation of Panem.
Traits Katniss Everdeen is very determined. If she wants to do something, she tries until she achieves it. This is proved when Katniss wins the Hunger Games after she is told that she should try to win, by Prim, her sister and throughout the games she remembers these words and kind of uses them as her guide. She is also very strong in both mental and physical ways. Her worst character trait is that she lets kind people root into her, so if someone pretends to be kind she will let them root in which means she lets them know about her and becomes easygoing with them.
“There are no winners only survivors.¨ 74th Hunger Games. Trust me when I tell you this, I am a survivor. Never underestimate your opponent, especially when the competition is me. I am standing my ground telling you that I am a survivor and I will do anything to come out of the Hunger Games alive. With my artistic abilities as well as my resourceful creativeness, my will to hunt and to not starve, as well as to fix any injuries that might come along, will assure myself as the victor.
