Jack the Ripper chose to kill prostitutes, he only struck at night and he only killed people in London. Jack the Ripper did not think twice about his actions, he had to ask himself should I really do this and what will be my consequences? Jack the Ripper killed most of his victims while they were exiting their wagons or if they were walking in a dark alley. Jack the Ripper covered his victim's mouth so they would not scream. Jack the Ripper was one of the most famous serial killers because of who he killed.
Prostitutes were seen as moral failures that preferred walking the streets in their tatty clothing than going to work a job which encouraged them to improve themselves.Within the social circles of the upper class, conversations about prostitutes were unknown but this changed from 1850 when prostitution became a subject of fierce debate. These debates were argued through the social classes apart from the lower classes where prostitution was a part of everyday life.

A letter sent into the Times from an unknown writer laid the blame for the murders on society, not the killer. The reverend Samuel Barnett who was the bishop of the church in Whitechapel believed that the “public conscience was awakened to the life that these horrors revealed”(Rumbelow 43) suggesting that the murders forced opened the eyes of all them who wanted to keep them shut and ignore that the east end was part of London. One London paper protested that “surely Jack the Ripper is not to be our modern John the baptist”(Emsley 9). During this period women tended to walk in fear of their lives and hatred began to build up towards foreigners and Jewish people. Judith R. Walkowitz is a Professor Emeritus at John Hopkins University, specializing in modern British history and women’s history. In her book City of Dreadful Delight, she explores nineteenth century England’s development of sexual politics and danger by examining the hype of Jack the Ripper and other tales of sensational nature. By investigating social and cultural history she reveals the complexity of sexuality, and its influence on the public sphere and vice versa. Victorian London had upheld traditional notions of class and gender, that is until they were challenged by forces of different institutions.

In City of Dreadful Delight, Judith Walkowitz effortlessly weaves tales of sexual danger and more significantly, stories of the overt tension between the classes, during the months when Jack the Ripper, the serial murderer who brutally killed five women, all of them prostitutes, terrorized the city. The book tells the story of western male chauvinism that was prevalent in Victorian London not from the point of view not of the gazer, but rather of the object. Walkowitz argues that the press coverage of the murders served to construct a discourse of heterosexuality in which women were seen as passive victims and sexuality was associated with male violence. Much of City of Dreadful Delight explores the cultural construction and reconstruction of class and sexuality that preceded the Ripper murders. Walkowitz successfully investigates the discourses that took place after the fact and prior social frameworks that made the Ripper-inspired male violence and female passivity model possible and popular.

While there were other murders during this time period, they did not showcase the same modus operandi as the murders of Mary Jane Kelly, Catherine Eddowes, Annie Chapman, Mary Ann Nichols, and Elizabeth Stride. Though many scholars have conducted cases studies, even with modern forensics analysis of the case, we are no closer to closing the case on Jack the Ripper. There have been many serial killer cases that have attracted the attention of not only the media but of mental health experts as well. Many experts from a variety of different fields have come together to answer one question: Why did they do it? It is believed that most, if not all, serial killers have a mental illness, motives, and/or trauma during their lives that made them start killing. Serial killers are not only the effect of nurture but also nature. The environment of their country, the United States is our focus, can cause the number of serial killers to increase especially if the country itself is unstable.

In London of 1888 there was an unknown serial killer that was named Jack the Ripper. The name “Jack the Ripper” originally came from a letter from someone that claimed to be the killer. The killer was also called, “the Whitechapel Murderer” and the “Leather Apron.” In this essay I will talk about the mystery of Jack the Ripper and the killings and talk about some questions, such as, who was Jack the Ripper, why did he kill those women, and all in such a similar manner, and how did he know so much about the human body.
It all started in the East End of London in 1888, from August 7 till November 10.
Since prostitution has been around there have been labels and stigmas behind the workers, their morals and the job itself. Leaving these men and women to be rejected rights, health care, insurance, etc. Weitzer observes, “[i]nstead of viewing themselves as ‘prostituted,’ they may embrace more neutral work identities, such as ‘working women’ or ‘sex workers’ […] These workers are invisible in the discourse of the anti-prostitution crusade precisely because their accounts clash with abolitionist goals.” Weitzer is hinting at the fact that these women and men see themselves as workers too, deserving of workers rights and protection, just as you and I would expect. But they are declined help and benefits because of the stigma following their line of work, based on societal values.
