IMPORTANCE OF JUSTICE in society

Chivalry is needed in today's society. Society today lacks respect, justice, and honor. I believe that we as a people need to work together to bring back these important pillars of our foundation. Our culture has changed so much in the last century or so, that it is hard to believe that we are a nation built on respect, justice, and honor. Respect shows the value of others. It is a sense of worth or value to another person. It is often nowadays that people show no value to their fellow man. Respect is a huge part of common decency. Respect can help foster a more peaceful environment. If society would practice a little more respect there would be less wars and more peace. Everyone owes everyone at least a basic amount of respect. Justice in today's society does not occur as much as we think. Everyday, people all around the world, are convicted of crimes they did not commit. Some as simple as shoplifting, others as terrible as murder. We must accept that justice may not always win. Although this is the case we can help justice become more common. Justice should not be an afterthought it should prevail within all of us. The mere definition of justice should make us want to be more fair, more fair to each other and more fair to those closest to …show more content…
Honor is the value of a person not only in his or her eyes but also the eyes of his or her society. In the 17-19th century men would duel on “fields of honor”. In today's society men don’t even come close to doing that. The closest we get is getting into a fist fight that does not even do that much damage to each other. Herbert Hoover once said “When there is a lack of honor in the government the morals of the whole people are poisoned.” If we don’t have an honorable government, then the people following that government are going to learn the ways of that government and will lose their honor. Also if one government has no honor how will other governments respect such a
Every culture in the world has its own unique set of values that they adhere to in life. The most important value to people is their honor. Honor is a very important factor in a person life that they will stop at nothing to make sure it is not lost. This endless pursuit of keeping honor can causes both positive and negative effects to a society. The reason honor is a main driving force in a person's life is for the simple fact that it determines how the society views that person's integrity, honesty and truthfulness to himself and family.
James Bowman, a scholar and writer, suggests that, “we are living in a ‘post-honor society’” (Punn). In short, we are living in a civilization where honor is not as prominent as it used to be. Honor was different during the victorian age, that was a time when men lived to stand up for his principles. In James Bowman’s book he explains that, “over the 20th century honor has been largely ‘discredited’ to the point where the ‘word doesn’t seem to exist anymore’” (Punn). This is to say that currently honor is sort of hidden beneath other things such as loyalty and sacrifice. Honor in our society today definitely is not as important to people as it once used to
Honor can be defined by how one holds them in the public eye. Others may say that honor is how you live your life when none can see your actions. However defined honor can play major roles in how a person will act in a given situation. The Crucible by Arthur Miller has excellent examples of how honor can manipulate people’s decisions in times of importance. John proctor holds his moral standpoint and does not falter into the temptations of selfishness, while Elizabeth would describe honor as how a person lives their lives. Some can even describe honor as what is most important in life; family. Giles believed that his life was the ultimate object he could sacrifice to maintain his family’s happiness. However honor can be defined, one thing is certain; Everyone has some degree of honor in their lives.
The ideals of chivalry are inextricably linked with the medieval period, and even today it is an ideal we still pay lip service to. Many historians however have questioned whether the knights and nobility of the time actually took it any more seriously than we do. Johan Huizinga described it as “a cloak for a whole world of violence and self-interest” , an “illusion of society [that] clashed with the reality of things” , and in our rather cynical age, this is probably the predominant view of the middle ages. Nonetheless, it is not a view that has gone unchallenged by more recent historians, and even Huizinga concedes that for the nobility, chivalry constituted “an amazing self-deception” , an ideal that resonated with many young nobles who wanted to believe in it, for all its impracticalities.
Technically chivalry is defined as the moral code of knights in medieval times i.e.: dignity, courtesy, bravery, generosity, and gallantry. This was the manner of respect in which women were to be treated, and a knight was to uphold the code always. One can imagine courtly ladies strolling through the court in fine gowns, and having a chivalrous knight lay his cloak over a muddy patch so the ladies shan't muss their shoes. These days should some kind man stand for an extra second at a door to keep it open for an approaching woman, she may be amazed at this display of courtesy.
Chivalry isn’t dead is a phrase that we hear regularly, however, not many people apply it in real life. Chivalry is fundamentally being a Gentleman. The basic aspects are opening doors, offering your seat to a woman and, again, being a Gentleman.
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
Chivalry is the type of thing that would be great to have in our society but I don’t believe that it exists too much anymore in the world today. Let me break down here some of the chivalry rules compared with the actions of the people of the current world.
Most people today think that chivalry and honor are non-existent, but really these things are still abundantly in our lives, they just are not taken quite as seriously as they were back in the Middle Ages. If you pay attention to the movies in our culture today most of them display some sort of chivalry, honor, bravery, or loyalty.
How would you define honor? Is it a high self esteem and confidence or it is always doing the right thing even when no one else is looking? According to Dictionary.com it’s top definition of honor is “ honest, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions” which nails my view of honor on top of the head. This two syllable word packs so much meaning when it comes to my core values. Honor is what you stand for as person and you will do anything to uphold the integrity of it.
What does chivalry look like for a 21st century man? My personal code of chivalry is important because this is how people view me. My personal code of chivalry is important to me because this is how I get trust, respect and I can inspire other people to be alike me or become Christians. The most significant morals and values in my life are primary God, others additional, and I am the last. The moral code for the 21st century man has not changed considerably from the Arthurian Legends time.
Chivalry has certain ethical standards that foster the development of manhood. Men are to be: truthful, loyal, courteous to others, helpful and respectful to women, supporters of justice, and defendants of those who are in need. Chivalry offers more
Chivalry came to exist in the Middle Ages around the 12th century. Although the code of chivalry had nothing to do with women until the 15th century and they are mentioned in some versions so that soldiers in war time did not kill women, despite being thought of as a “source of evil”. Exploring and discussing how to act honorably toward each other is a place to start. The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. How can you be a person of integrity? First, figure out what integrity (honor) is. My mother used to say to treat others the way you wanted to be treated. Does anyone do that these days? Well, I know that I don't want to be cut off in traffic, or yelled at, or bumped into rudely at the grocery store, or left picking up garbage all over my yard from the street. So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
