Baseball is like the circus it is entertaining, you never know what to expect and there is good food. There are many different opinions on what America's pastime is. Some people say it is football, some people say it is basketball but it is actually baseball. Baseball is the most unique sport in America. That is one reason why it is the pastime. However that isn't the only reason that baseball is America's pastime. Baseball is America's pastime because it is the oldest sport in America, the history of the sport is more interesting and the rules of the game make the game better than all the other sports.

Basketball Team. Baseballs first professional team began in 1869 (Boyd 154). The first professional basketball team didn't even form until 1898. Basketball isn't even in the pastime talk but football however is and even in relation to football, baseball was around for 43 years before the first NFL team. So the first baseball team was founded in 1869. However, the first World Series wasn't until 1903 (Abrams 3). That makes it sound like for the first 34 years of baseball there was no end goal in the season so nobody would want to watch baseball. Yes that is true but the first Super Bowl wasn't for another 64 years. That means there were 64 World Series before Super Bowl I. That is why baseball is America’s pastime due to the age of the sport. Baseball has been around for a while so it has had a lot more interesting happenings throughout the years.
Baseball also has more icons than football or basketball. Some of baseballs icons are Pete rose who had 4256 career hits, Babe Ruth who had 714 career home runs or Barry Bonds who had 73 home runs in a season (Boyd 154). When thinking about football names like Joe Montana or Dan Marino come to mind. Those names aren't as big as a Babe Ruth, they aren't even as big as Michael Jordan. Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player (Duckett 1). Basketball and Football never had anyone like Jackie Robinson who showed their passion for the game as much as Jackie did. There is no story like it in any other sport, Jackie Robinson was ridiculed greatly and yet he still played. pastime. The last reason that baseball surpasses other sports as America's pastime is that the rules of the game make the game more fun than the others.
Baseball is probably the least complicated sport in fouls and penalties and the scoring system is better. Baseballs scoring system is better because there is nothing more exciting than a Home Run (Chen 2). In football the only way to score is a touchdown or a field goal and there is nothing that can give any excitement like a home run. In basketball there isn't anything either the closest to a home run would be a three pointer and those aren't even a fun a home runs. In baseball there is also a lot more freedom (Chen 16). In football after every play there is always a flag and you have to wait a minute for the refs to tell what the penalty was. In basketball there are also a ton of fouls and you have to wait another minute for the guys to shoot their free throws. In baseball you just pitch and hit and no fouls expect foul balls. Baseball has a lot more freedom and excitement so that is why it is America's
pastime. That is why baseball is America's pastime. The main reason why it is America's pastime is that it is an old sport. The second reason why it is the oldest sport is because of its history. And the last reason is because it is a more entertaining sport than the other sports. That proves why baseball is America's pastime.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
No other game appeals so much to the foreign born youngsters and nothing, not even the schools, teaches the American spirit so quickly, or inculcates the idea of sportsmanship or fair play as thoroughly. No matter where Babe Ruth was, be it on the diamond or off the diamond, the fans respected him, forgetting his flashy ways and brash behaviour. Ruth helped socialize and bring together all Americans, sports lovers, baseball lovers and non-sports lovers alike.... ... middle of paper ...
Although Jackie Robinson was not the best African-American baseball player of his time, his attitude and ability to handle racist harassment led the way for the rest of his race to play Major League Baseball, amongst other sports. Being accepted into professional sports also helped African-Americans become more easily accepted into other aspects of life. Jackie's impact in the world for the black population is enormous.
[1] Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. When people hear the word "America," they think of apple pie, meat and potatoes, July 4th, and inevitably the everlasting love of this country, baseball. The credit is given to a man named Alexander J. Cartwright, who drew up a set of rules for a game played with a bat, a round ball, and a glove. Along with the rules came a sketching of a diamond-shaped field on which the game was to be played. The rules that Cartwright wrote up in 1845 may have very well changed somewhat, but the game of baseball has remained remarkably constant throughout history into today.
While Jackie Robinson’s effect on American sports was very significant, as it improved all sports, not just baseball, it was not the largest impact he made. His impact on sports was huge, but he only affected the athletes and fans for the most part. Also, it made a very positive impact, but for no real significant purpose for the entirety of society. Sports are nothing but entertainment for fans that are not on the teams or in the organizations, and this effect did not have a significant effect on their lifestyles. Robinson left a substantial mark on other areas of American society, though, that have much more meaning to society as a whole, such as the military and human rights.

...es and records came out of the 1920s which set goals for young ones. Many icons and models were created as the growth of baseball continued. Children named people like Babe Ruth an icon and role model as they reached their own standards in later years. Baseball impacted others in new job opportunities, entertainment, and more
Baseball and football are very popular in America Sports today. Some people think that baseball is just a laid back sport and just boring then other people say football is better because it is more physical and harder and it's a man's game. But that is not true because it comes down to the mental and the physical part of the game baseball over rules all of that.
In America, it all began in the industrial age, which brought long work weeks and boring jobs. The employees across the nation were in need of a break. Ever since the mid-nineteenth century, white American settlers began to participate in organized sports such as baseball, football, basketball, curling, and bowling. In as early as 1820, a game involving a bat, bases, and a ball was evolving in the
Hot Dogs, Apple Pie, and Baseball are American icons of summer. Baseball is also known as America’s favorite pastime. Many kids start playing baseball in the streets, school-yard, or on formed T-Ball and Little Leagues as young as 3 or 4 years old and will play well into adulthood. Satchel Paige was the oldest Major League Baseball (MLB) player. He retired at the age of 59 (Satchel, n.d.).
“America’s favorite pastime” is undisputedly baseball. Ever since the start of baseball in the United States in the late 1700s, baseball has been a game enjoyed by the majority of America. Baseball has not only had a profound effect on the United States but has spread its reach into foreign lands. Perhaps the most effected by baseball’s foreign outreach is the Caribbean. The Caribbean (mainly Cuba and the Dominican Republic) have embraced baseball as a way to a better life.
“The way I figured it” said Jackie Robinson, “I was even with baseball and baseball with me. The game had done much for me, and I had done much for it” (Robinson). Many people will not publically stand up for what they believe in due to fear of retribution. Jackie Robinson stood up for what he believed in even though people didn’t agree with him. Jackie Robinson is still famous today due to his outstanding baseball skills, his love for the game, and breaking the color barrier.
Since the sport first emerged, baseball and America have shared the same values, responded to the same events, and struggled with the same social and economic issues. To learn of the ideals concerning the sport of baseball in America, is to know the heart and mind of America. Baseball developed before the Civil War but did not achieve professional status until the 1870s (The Baseball Glove, 2004). In 1871, the National Association of Professional Baseball Players was formed. Unfortunately, the organization ran into financial hardships and was abandoned in 1875.
Americans began playing baseball on informal teams, using local rules, in the early 1800s. By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's "national pastime." Alexander Joy Cartwright of New York invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Alexander Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball.
For most sports fans there is nothing like opening day and a baseball field. In recent years I have over heard several people say Baseball is not the National Pastime or National Game any longer. When I query these people the typical response is Football is our new National pastime/game. Frank Deford (Nov 7, 2012) a writer for Sports Illustrated said, "Baseball is what we used to be. Football is what we have become." I refuse to believe this based on my knowledge of both games. In this paper we will exam the facts and I would submit to you that Baseball is still the National Pastime/Game and it cannot be disputed.
