Suicide, emotions, crying, these all may be effects of depression. One little thing could spark depression in a person and athlete. Therefore, athletes are more likely to experience depression. Three reasons why athletes are more likely to experience depression are athletes have a lot of pressure on them, athletes tend to overwork or overtrain themselves, and a lot of athletes use steroids or illegal drugs. To begin, an additional reason athletes may experience depression is athletes have a lot of pressure on them. McClatchy states that, “The researchers monitored mood levels of 465 collegiate athletes over three years and found 6.3 percent of athletes met the criteria for clinically significant depression and 24 percent were considered ‘clinically …show more content…
What this argument fails to consider is that athletes abusing steroids may lead to depression. As Mueller notes, “Those who do decide to stop taking steroids experience irritability, muscle aches, anxiety, and depression so severe it could lead to suicide” (2001). To explain, there are many symptoms that can happen because of the stoppage of steroids. Most steroids used are used by athletes. If the athletes decide to stop using steroids they can experience extreme depression. Like every drug if someone starts using it they become addicted to it. If someone stops using a drug, their body is used to that drug being in their system. If the drug is not in their system, then their body will not function right or may lead to depression. This depression could be lead to suicide or thoughts of suicide. Suicide and depression is nothing to mess with which this next evidence will explain why. Wilson points out that, “She called husband, Frank, and they told Efrain he needed to stop because steroids are dangerous… Three and a half weeks later, Mrs. Mareno found Efrain in a bedroom at home, a bullet in his head, a .22 caliber pistol in his hand…” (2005). Furthermore, Efrain is a young athlete that used steroids. His parents took away the steroids from him which caused the depression and has lead him to suicide. Athletes should never start taking steroids because eventually they will stop. When the athlete stops depression may take over their life. If someone stops using steroids they will never know what their emotions are going to do to them. It is bad when depression takes over someone's life because the person will never know what they will do. Athletes are in the most danger because steroids will help athletes get the edge on the opponent, but may take their life. The example of Efrain’s suicide is the good example why steroids are bad for someone when they are using the drug and
1 in 4 people will be affected by mental health issues at some point in their lives. Depression affects 20-25% of Americans ages 18+ in a given year (CDC.) Student athletes are students who go to school but participate in athletics at the same time. Student athletes are at a higher risk due to having different stress factors that normal students don't have to go through during their college or high school athletic careers. Major events would be the death of Madison Holleran.
You’ve all seen them, the enormously large muscle-heads at the gym, the participates of the World’s Strongest Man Competition, the amazing offensive tackles, and the lightning fast runners. They were all unnaturally strong, and looked like gods. You tend to obsess over how beautiful their bodies are, how strong they are, or how fast they can run. All you can think about is reaching that level of athletic excellence, and nothing will hold you back. At times like these some people tend to take the quick fit to get closer to their idols, in the form of steroids. But what individuals tend not see is the horrible side effects that accompany the use of these anabolic steroids. These powerful drugs have both positive and negative results from their use. Along with increased strength and size, users of steroids suffer from a wide range of sicknesses such as cancer, shrinkage of testicles, bad acne, hair loss, damage organs, intense mood swings, and impotence.
Depression: a common mental disorder which affects up to one in four female athletes and one in nine male athletes. Being an athlete is a difficult task, and can tear down one's well-being. Therefore, they are more likely to experience depression. Three reasons that athletes are more likely to experience depression is the retirement of a sport creates a void in their life, they’re more prone to injury, and they have a great deal of pressure put on them.
Depression is a serious issue that has no single cause. Depression is likely a combination of many factors such as genetic, biochemical, psychological and environmental. According to research, depressive illnesses are indications of disorders of the brain. Depression can affect all ages and all parts of society. Periods of sadness, irritability, fatigue, and loss of interest are some symptoms of depression.
This paragraph will talk about the symptoms players have developed, committing suicide and research they've done on the individual's brain. Death’s in the sports world is nothing new for example Junior Seau a linebacker in the NFL mainly playing for San Diego but also Miami and New England also a 12 time pro bowler and future hall of famer shot himself in the chest and died without leaving a suicide note. “His once photographic memory was shattered his ability to handle numbers gone and his temper suddenly sharp and violent (9nfl players killed by trauma). Seau suffered many concussions confirmed by an autopsy. Also Derek Boogard a defenseman for the New York Rangers who overdosed on drugs and alcohol while recovering from a concussion. Symptoms of a concussion are forgetfulness slurring aggression and blacking out. In the novel ‘The Best American Sports Writing’ They said ‘they forget I had NFL players walk up to me at a funeral and asked me if I knew the way home, they slur I have wives calling me saying he used to be a nice man now a...
My issue over the concern of athletes have been struggling with the usage of steroids has widely spread among athletes and others; not only do steroids give an athlete a hard times but it’s also an unfair advantage to the other athletes and what they’ve accomplish. “Besides making muscles bigger, anabolic steroids may help athletes recover from a hard workout more quickly by reducing the amount of muscle damage during the session” (“Steroids in Sports”,2005). Now a days steroids are everywhere as an athlete. Many males and female young athletes preferably take it because they want to look and feel good when it comes to impressing someone and trying to become someone they look forward too. Young teens and adults try to cheat themselves in the career of their dreams. When it comes to a sport, teen athletes are not aware of what type of consequences may happen to them at the time. It may come to the time where it’s too late to take care of. In other cases, some athletes may like feeling the aggressive they get when they take drugs such as steroids. Athletes shouldn’t take steroids as the harmful health effects of the anabolic steroid in population wise. Many people have had their lives ruined by the use of illegal steroids and yet the desired effects are overwhelming that people tend to forget about the results and consequences that may effect. Athletes on steroids believe taking steroids will enhance their performance, strength, and size without having to put necessary work. These benefits, however, are associated with much short-term and long term risk.
The exact causes of depression seem to differ immensely, but there are some who believe that it maybe caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or that it may even be hereditary. Still there are others who believe that it is a combination of social, biological, emotional, psychological, and economical influences that may cause someone who has no family history of depression to develop even a mild case of depression.
Steroids became an option to athletes in the Olympics and other major sporting events during the 1950’s. But this use of steroids among athletes only became widely apparent when Canadian sprint runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroid use after winning the gold medal for the one hundred-meter dash during the 1988 Olympics (Francis, 45). Now a skinny fifteen-year-old can just walk down to the local gym and find people who either sell or know how to get in contact with those who sell the drug that will make him envious of his friends. Steroids are an attractive drug. While steroids seem harmless to the unaware user, they can have a risky effect. Most of the time whether the users are new or experienced, they do not know the dangerous consequences steroids can have on their bodies and their minds. Though steroids cause a relatively insignificant number of deaths in our society, the banning of steroids is justified because steroids have a lot of side effects not known to the uninformed user.
Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated about the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is whether performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs. Steroids can seem harmless to the uninformed user, but they actually have harmful side effects. According to the article “News examines relationship between steroids and heart-related deaths,” published by New York Daily News, “The study (presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Chicago on Nov. 12, 2006) shows that deaths jumped from 476 from in 1980-1992 to 987 from in 1993-2005.
People suffering from depression may also experience fatigue, decreased activity and/or ineffective activity. Suffers have a hard time concentrating and making
There is no single cause for depression. Life experiences, lifestyles, personality traits, all of which may play a role in the onset of depression. Something that creates a depression in an individual can suffer no effect in another.
Depression doesn’t just come from one single cause, but instead, “likely results from a combination of genetic, biochemical, environmental, and psychological factors (NIMH: 1)”. The National Institute of Mental Health also goes on to say that “subsequent depressive episodes may occur with or without obvious triggers (NIMH: 1)”. Different from what the Nation Institute of Mental Health says, Access Science, and encyclopedia of science and technology states that depression is caused by at least one occurrence of clinical depression that can happen at earlier ages. Other causes are cardiovascular disease, chronic illnesses, severe life events, and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (AccessScience: 1).
The effects that depression has on someone can truly be devastating. There are a lot of minor effects of depression, but there are also a magnitude of major effects that know how to change a person’s life. A couple of the minor effects may be low self-confidence, being sad most of the time and unexpected mood changes. The major symptoms have a severe negative effect on someone’s life and their body. So dreadful that can drive them insane, they begin to harm themselves by consuming unhealthy substances such as drugs and alcohol. Depression often drives people to commit suicide. Also their lack of self-convince pushes someone to not value their life and kill themselves to escape from a life that has no longer meaning to them. As well, they cut themselves, they think the pain of the wound will make them feel better and they think of it as an alternative way to deal with their problems.
Depression is different from physical illnesses because its cause cannot be traced to one single organ. Possible causes of depression include a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. (Smith & Seagal, 2016) There are a number of risk factors that share a connection with depression a few of them are; traumatic events like the death of a loved one, stressful events like financial problems, a history of mental illness in the family, pregnancy and child birth, being a member of the LGBT+ community in an unsupportive and unconducive situation, personality traits like issues with low self-esteem and confidence, strains in personal relationships, abuse of alcohol and illegal drugs, use of certain prescription pills, diagnosis of chronic life-threatening illnesses. College students are at a higher risk of developing depression because they are very likely to experience one or a combination of the risk
Depression affects everyone. According to Psychology Information Online, women are more at risk for depression. This is due to factors that are directly related to women such as reproductive, hormonal, genetic or other biological factors; abuse and oppression; interpersonal factors; and certain psychological and personality characteristics. In general, it has been found that people who have low self-esteem, who consistently view themselves and the world with pessimism, or who are readily overwhelmed by stress are more prone to depression. Psychologists often describe social learning factors as being significant in the development of depression, as well as other psychological problems. A serious loss, chronic illness, relationship problems, work stress, family crisis, financial setback, or any unwelc...
