US and Soviet Union during Cold War
If a country is weak, then other countries might invade and colonize it. Since human realized how useful the power is, leaders in some countries had the ambition to conquer the world. One example is that the Fuehrer from Germany Adolf Hitler started the World War II for dominating the world. However, Germany, Japan and Italy failed. Germany had been destroyed, and England and France were in deep debt and disarray, so there was no dominant country to be the political, economic, and military leader of the region. The U.S. and Soviet Union both wanted to use the opportunity to achieve their goals. The U.S. set up an alliance system in Western Europe, where the USSR did the same in the east. The competition got more intense, followed by the Cold War, which started in around 1947 and ended in 1991. During that period, two superpowers, US and Soviet Union, do alter earlier historical processes in political, economical and military aspects.

Aid program to get allies from Western Europe and military conflicts and affairs to dominant Far and Middle East and Africa helped the US gained more supporters than Soviet Union. The most important strike for Soviet Union was the disintegration in 1980s. If the country has separated and did not share the same goal, it cannot compete with the most powerful country on earth. As for the military equipment part, the US made weapons and sell them to make money; however, Soviet Union used a large amount of money to develop advanced weapons, leading to the depletion of the treasury.
