Thomas Jefferson was born on April 2, 1743, and died on July 4, 1826. In the 83 years of his life, Jefferson achieved many lifetime goals. Thomas Jefferson was born into a wealthy, self-educated family with many slaves working around him for his every need. While growing up, Thomas Jefferson was originally Anglican, but was influenced into becoming a deist. After Jefferson’s father’s death, Thomas went to William and Mary to learn Greek and Latin until 1760. After learning Greek and Latin, Jefferson stood as a candidate in the House of Burgesses. As a candidate, Jefferson opposed taxes and believed in a people run government rather than a monarchy. Along with speaking out for a democracy, Jefferson also wanted a law prohibiting any religious establishment that could possibly lead to separation of church and state. …show more content…

He was often accused of being atheist, although he still donated to and went to church. He prefered to keep his religion to himself, but maintained his public views about separation of the church and state. Jefferson was very involved in the education of the public. He proposed a plan that would set up a public education system in Virginia. When that failed, he still reformed the College of William and Mary, his alma mater, and founded the University of Virginia. In conclusion, Thomas Jefferson was different than most leaders in early America. Jefferson was a deist, who believed in God being the one and only, and worked towards his ideas rather than setting them aside.
