Nikola Tesla wasn’t fully known until the last few chapters of the book, Distant Waves by Suzanne Weyn, although he was the driving force for main plot points in the story. Throughout the novel, Tesla invented many new devices that help to drive the plot of the book forward, like the earthquake machine and the time machine. Tesla was the reason Jane was able to meet Thad and his time machine in the book is what saved Mimi, Thad, Jane and himself from possibly meeting death while the Titanic was sinking. Although, Tesla did have some questionable moments as well. Tesla was debatable character. Some would think he was insane. He exclaimed that he was having one of his flashes and said “I can taste the air. I can see all the food smells in
this room. It’s overwhelming me.” (page 287) Apart from his mental state, Tesla was a tall, gaunt man. his height being 6”4 (page 323.) Jane described him with curly black hair parted to the middle with brown shoes and a laboratory coat. He looked like he was in his mid to late forties. He had a heavy Eastern European accent and his lip would twitch nervously. (Page 19-20) He also could be considered a ‘Mad scientist’ as for Mrs. Brown accused him of being one. Tesla, rather than denying it, said “It would seem so.” (page 286) Tesla did not really have any special connection with any of the characters. Tesla is really only connected with a few characters from the story. Tesla was closest with his assistant Thad. Jane felt that she had a connection with Tesla since they met when Jane was younger. Tesla liked to keep most of his information to himself. Tesla was afraid of people stealing his ideas. Thad was the only person Tesla told his ideas to. Although when Thad and Jane started becoming closer, Thad shared what he knew about Tesla’s ideas to Jane. Tesla knew he could trust Jane because she kept all of his information to herself. Tesla and Jane started having a stronger connection with each other. The unstable, mad inventor, Nikola Tesla had few relationships with characters in the story and although Tesla wasn’t mentioned a lot in the book, he was almost always the main cause of the main plot points in the book Distant Waves.
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and physicist. He was also considered an eccentric genius and recluse. Tesla is best known for his feud with Thomas Edison over AC power Versus DC Power. He was also well known for inventing the Tesla Coil which is still used in radio technology today. Nikola Tesla was mostly forgotten until the 1990’s when there was a resurgence of interest in popular culture.
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was an eccentric man that was many lifetimes ahead of his generation. He was a man that dreamed of giving the world an unlimited supply of wireless energy. His genius imagination allowed him to think outside the box and solve issues that others had thought were unsolvable. Nikola Tesla proposed his vision for a system powered by an alternating current generator to Thomas Edison and was shot down because Thomas Edison’s power structure had already been established using a direct current system. The two butt heads however Nikola Tesla was relentless. After being used and rejected by Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla picked himself and went toe to toe with the most prolific inventor. The stage for David vs Goliath was set. Through Nikola Tesla’s borderline obsession to solve the design for an alternating current motor and sacrificing his own opportunity to become a wealthy man, we now live in a very efficient world where everyone reaps the rewards of his genius, few know his name, and even fewer know what he did.

The major encounters that Tesla and Faraday faced included social, economic, intellectual barriers. Considering socially, Faraday was considered to be a “...high-priest of Nature, revealing the hidden forces...”(Shortland) People saw Faraday as the highest of his field, the one who was the closest to God in relation to understanding his creation. That being said, if given the opportunity to spend the next year of my life in a different time period I would like to live during the year 1942 so I could work beside Tesla. This was the year before Tesla died, a time when he had experienced the full scope of his expertise and could impart that wisdom to me. My questions about his popularity would be answered in full. To heal a wound, though, it must be first isolated: and in the case of the world, it is literal flaw that resides with the mask of a wound - combated, though not incapacitated, by the innovators of the Earth. A telephone, refrigerator, microwave, civil rights and gender equality - not only technology, but even a concept as imperative as liberation or equality have altered the globe (as humans see it), for the better: technology has made life easier for humans, ideal rights and equality have been gifted to those that require it, and efforts have been exclaimed in order to protect the natural amenities that are taken for granted. The reason adhered to by the innovators, dedicated to creating the aforesaid circumstances, is rather simple: they endeavor as they do because of the profit that befits not only themselves, but the world in doing so. When Alexander Graham Bell and Antonio Meucci developed the telephone, they distributed communication among the masses (a profit), and thereby changed the globe for the better; that same reason is reflected throughout the ages: Percy Spencer, inventor of the microwave, gained favorable avail via his invention for not only himself, but the Earth as well. Thus, the innovators of the world retain that reason: they change things for the better because of the positive benefit that would befit doing so - the positive benefit for not only themselves, but the world.
