Who Is Mr Morrison A Hero

Heroes live all around and show kindness in many different ways. In the historical fiction novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, written by Mildred D. Taylor there are several people who portray heroism. There are several heroes in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, which demonstrate heroic attributes. A hero is outstanding to that of an ordinary individual, acting with loyalty, trustworthiness, and confidence. In this novel, Stacey, Mr. Morrison, and Uncle Hammer possess these leadership qualities. Stacey, is a kind older brother, who shows his unending strength when his troubled friend asks for help.

Throughout the novel, Cassie's older brother Stacey, demonstrates many heroic traits. It was after T.J. was beaten by the Simms brothers, that he

desperately found Stacey to help him return home safely. Even though T.J.'s previous actions resulted in Mama getting fired from her teaching position, Stacey felt for T.J., who was in obvious need of support. A shocked Cassie tries to reason with Stacey by declaring, "You don't owe him nothin', especially after what he done to Mama," to which Stacey replied, "He's hurt bad Cassie and I got to get him home" (Taylor 249). Even though T.J. betrays Stacey and the Logans in the past, Stacey selflessly overlooks T.J.'s poor choices and decides to help him in his time of need. Stacey puts his own safety at risk, for a friend that betrayed him in the past. At that moment, Stacey knew that leading T.J. home, was the right thing to do. At another time, Stacey shares what happened to Papa, Mr. Morrison, and himself by explaining, "Soon's I could. . . I tied Jack to a tree and run back to Papa" (Taylor 215). Recalling Stacey's mental and physical strength during this Wallace ambush, the reader realizes this young boy quickly responds when under pressure. Whether it is running towards Papa to provide him assistance, or secretly aiding TJ who was severely injured, Stacey is unwavering and confident when he is needed. Just like Stacey, Mr. Morrison illustrates heroic properties throughout the story.
Mr.

Morrison is another heroic character in the novel Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry. He is a strong and confident acquaintance of Papa's, who came to live with the Logan family after losing his job on the railroad. Honestly admitting to being fired for a fight with some men on the railroad, Mr. Morrison eagerly accepts the position of hired hand on the Logan farm. Papa explains to the family why Mr. Morrison is at their house by stating, "when I asked he wanted to work here, he said he would" (Taylor 37). Mr. Morrison is hardworking because he never gives up and continues to stay strong after losing his job. Mr. Morrison is straightforward with Mama, describing the need to stand his ground, which led to him being fired from his paying job. Working for little money, food and shelter, no job was beneath Mr. Morrison, who began to form a strong bond with the members of the Logan family. The connection the family had with Mr. Morrison is tested when Stacey explains, "After them men shot Papa, they come down trying to get Mr. Morrison, but he was too fast... Mr. Morrison picked up one of them like he wasn't nothing ... and fling him down on the ground so hard it must've broke his back" (Taylor 215). During the Wallace ambush, Mr. Morrison stays loyal to Papa and Stacey. Mr. Morrison is loyal, because after seeing what happened to Papa, he had the opportunity to run for his own safety. Instead, he bravely fought off the ambush until Papa and Stacey were safe again. Along with Mr. Morrison and Stacey, Uncle Hammer proves to be a

hero.
Like other heroic characters in the novel, Uncle Hammer, travels down from the north to stand proud with his family against racism and injustice. After buying an expensive car, Uncle Hammer sped first over a creaky bridge while Big Ma cried, "Hammer! They think you're Mr.Granger" (Taylor 139). Confident Uncle Hammer wants to show the people at the end of the structure that a man of his color could own a high class car! The people on the other side are shocked to see that an African American man is driving a high society car. After reaching the end of the structure, Uncle Hammer is overjoyed to see the Wallaces' faces at the end. Even though Uncle Hammer worships his new car, he will do anything for his family. After hearing about his families financial troubles, Uncle Hammer sold his car and says, "What good is a car? It can't grow cotton. You can't build a home on it. And you can't raise four fine babies in it" (Taylor 236). Uncle Hammer's unselfish act helped his family pay mortgage for their land. After realizing that the selling his car would be able to help his family pay for their land, Uncle Hammer does not hesitate. Uncle Hammer shows that he will do anything for his family. His courage and giving behavior has proven him to be a hero.
Stacey, a cultured older brother showed great strength and selflessness when he had to save his father and best friend. Mr. Morrison has been a loyal and loving friend to the Logan family through all of their hardships. Uncle Hammer's proud and giving personality has proven him a hero. These three character in, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, have shown the qualities of a hero.
