Who Is Mahfouz's 'Zaabalwai'?

Mahfouz’s story “Zaabalwai” portrays society’s expectations of a relationship with God to come easy. In other words, they perceive the relationship with God to come unproblematic with no effort and nothing entailed. The correlation between life and faith is significant one concept can’t live without the other, life with no meaning can’t survive. Mahfouz’s shows this within “Zaabalawi”, the narrator is an ordinary man who is inflicted with a mysterious illnesses of unknown origins with no known cure, he is distressed. Until his father mentions a man called Sheikh Zaabalwai, his father testifies to the narrator about Zaabalwai “ May his blessing descend upon you, he’s a true saint of God, a remover of worries and troubles, were it not for him I would have died miserably” (Mahfouz 1). This statement as well as the other citizens account of Zaabalwai as a saint or miracle main who possesses healing powers, embarks the narrator on a quest to find him. As the story proceeds, the narrator gains more information about the miracle man, Zaabalwai is symbol used by the people who have encountered him as a God or a way of life. As mentioned, during his quest the narrator meets a variety of people who’ve experienced the wonders of Zaabalawi, such as the lawyer, the bookseller, the government officer, the calligrapher, the musician and the drunken man, then there are those who don’t know or don’t care for Zaabalwai. Mahfouz not only uses Zaabalwai has a symbol but he also uses the narrator as a symbol as well. The narrator’s illness represents the hardships we all face in life and the narrator’s quest to find Zaabalawi represents us seeking God in our times of need.
