Who Is John Proctor Honest In The Crucible

Amongst all the characters in The Crucible, John Proctor is the one of the few who tell a story not just in the novel but within himself. While reading this literary work we find there is a lot more than meets the eye to this seemingly antisocial farmer. We discover that through unintentional meaning John is actually the moving point in this plot. If not for his affair with Abigail, the motive of which started the witch trials in Salem would not have come about. John Proctor is a honest, blunt-spoken, and undaunted man. Now, even though John made the extreme mistake of having an affair with Abigail, he admitted it to his wife and to the court. For example, “God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands. I know you must see it now” (Miller 1206). He’s stating that he knows what he happened was completely sinful and that he leaves the truth in their hands. He knows that what he did was wrong but he also realizes that in order to make a sin right, you have to admit to it and repent and that is what makes him honest. It can be hard to admit to something wrong you’ve done , especially something illegal, so the fact that he does is a true testament to his integrity. John knows that by going to the court to do the things he’s doing he could very well end up in much trouble himself, but rather than cowering out he continues his mission. John doesn’t let Danforth intimidate him and even goes as far as to call Abigail out for the affair in front of everyone. John stares danger right in the face and screams at it. John knows admitting the affair will lead to his arrest but he does it anyway. He knew it was what needed to be done and accepted that. He doesn’t back down in scary or dangerous situations and he does what he needs to
