John Proctor, the most important and successful character in The Crucible, surprisingly decided to break one of the most important commandments. During his normal working life as a farmer, John Proctor decided he was going to cheat on his wife. He had several affairs with Abigail Williams throughout the dramatic play. Proctor was asked by Hale to recite all Ten Commandments to confirm he was a true man of faith. Although he was wise and stubborn at different times, John was the leader and head spokesman for the community.
John Proctor was a dynamic character throughout the drama. He was a Puritan farmer who influences the townspeople of Salem, Massachusetts in a big way. Proctor was a husband and a father who held very dearly to his family. Occasionally John would be out in the fields on Sunday, said his wife, Elizabeth, "My husband is a good and righteous man. He's never drunk, as some are, nor wasting his time at the shovelboard, but always at his work". At one point in the …show more content…

John decided to cheat on Elizabeth with Abigail Williams, Elizabeth's servant. Elizabeth was sick and Abigail Williams was hired to work for the Proctor's. While John was out in the fields, Abigail was in the house taking care of Elizabeth. While Abigail supposedly was taking care of Elizabeth, they went into the woods and preformed their witch hunts.
Abigail was in love with John Proctor. She accused Elizabeth of being a witch. John loved Elizabeth very much, but kept his thoughts to himself. Abigail wanted John for herself. She made up the false story thinking Elizabeth would go out of the picture.
John shows both of his character traits when he goes to court and claims Abigail as lying to the town when she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft. After the trials, everything returned back to normal, except Proctor did not want to go to church due to the greed of Reverend
