Who Is John Muir's Greatest Accomplishments

John Muir passed away December 24, 1914, at the age of 76. He was a resident of Los Angeles, California at the time of his passing. He passed from complications of pneumonia at the Los Angeles Hospital, he is survived by his two daughters, Helen and Wanda Muir. He lived a wonderful and amazing life full of many accomplishments.

John was born April 21, 1838, in the town of Dunbar, Scotland. His parents were Daniel and Anne Muir, who also had two other children. In 1949, John and his family moved to their farm in Wisconsin. John spent his teen years going to school and spent long hours in the field helping his father maintain the farm. In his free time, he loved to read. John would stay up all night to read or wake up hours before he had to

go work in the field just so he would have more time to read.
He was a very intelligent child, he even built his own alarm clock to wake himself up early so he had time to read every morning. His inventions were submitted to the state fair where he was noticed and accepted into the University of Wisconsin. While he attended the university, he never successfully completed a degree. He spent his time taking classes that he thought would be useful such as geology and botany. He fell in love with learning and found a passion for everything in the natural world. He would take his own field trips to surrounding areas to study the magnificent flora and fauna. On one of his trips, he hiked from Indianapolis, Indiana all the way to Cedar Key in Florida, and along the way, he made sure to document everything he saw.
After he finished his time at the University, he decided to travel to California, again by foot, where he came across the Sierra Nevada mountains. He found so much beauty in the mountains that they forever changed his life. From that point on he only wanted to preserve nature so others could experience the joy and amazement he felt. The mountains made him feel so full of joy and amazement that he refused to continue herding sheep through them because he saw how he was damaging the land. Once he arrived in California, he settled down for a little while and started his family.
John was a loving husband and father to his wife, Louie Muir, and their two daughters. They lived on an orchard just outside of Martinez, California, which his father-in-law owned. While living on the orchard, John was able to improve his horticultural skills and spent a lot of his time growing fruit. As he became more involved fighting for the preservation of land he spent a lot of time away from his family, but they always encouraged him to pursue his love for nature and do what he felt was right.
John was the country's pioneering conservationist and naturalist.

Many people would call him the “father of our National Parks”. He was able to start a revolution of people caring about nature and all it has to offer. His actions lead to the government putting in regulations that preserved certain areas of land from further development and damage. His most important accomplishment was taking president Theodore Roosevelt camping in what is now Yosemite National Park, where he was able to show the president that land as magnificent as Yosemite needs to be protected so future generations will be able to enjoy it. As a result of their trip, Roosevelt decided that land this incredible needs to be preserved, so he set forth regulations that enabled a series of preserved areas and more national parks to be created. John Muir was also founder and president of the Sierra Club, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the environment.

John was a very talented and diverse man, he never had a specific career. He was an inventor, a writer, a naturalist, a geologist and was skilled at many other professions. Later in his life, he ended up doing a lot of research to discover the natural history of many places. He also loved going on adventures and would join groups going on various expeditions in order to get to travel to new places discover and record what they would

find.
For example, on one particular expedition he took to Alaska he and the group he was with were able to discover a never before seen glacier in Glacier Bay Alaska, which was then named after him (the Muir Glacier).
He was also a very skilled writer, he published numerous magazines and wrote 12 books. All of which focused on his discoveries of new places and ideas as well as his love for nature and the desire he had to preserve it. He wanted everyone to feel as wonderful as he did when he was out hiking and enjoying himself. So he wrote his books to get people outside and discovering new things, as well as fighting for the conservation of the land they deserve to be able to enjoy.
John was a passionate and hardworking man who lived a wonderful and adventure filled life. His adventures included hiking across the country, several times, to camping with the president of the United States and everything in between. His numerous and outstanding accomplishments will forever be remembered. He led the way for large-scale conservation efforts around the country, and he was essentially the founder of our nation's National Park system. His actions will allow everyone to enjoy the spectacular land, that is now free from the threat of development and exploitation, for generations to come. His books will forever immortalize the great man he was and the amazing ideas he had. As well as being a true conservationist he was an all around good man as well as a loving husband and father, and he will be greatly missed. John will live on through his accomplishments and will never be forgotten.
