Diego Velazquez painted a portrait of the princess of Spain and her attendants called Las Meninas. He was the official painter for the king of Spain. Later on the artist Pablo Picasso repainted the portrait, but his style of painting is different. The paintings have many differences and alikeness. I will now tell you the differences i see and the similarity i see between the two paintings.
First of all if you saw Diego Velazquez's painting then after 5 mins later you saw Pablo Picasso’s, you won’t be like “oh these two look alike. “ Their paintings are completely different. If you haven’t noticed then i will now state it, the paintings are by two different artistes; famous artistes by that. That would explain the large differences in their paintings. Velazquez was probably thinking how his painting could look lifelike, while Passco might’ve been thinking how he could make it one thing stand out and he used his unique mind to repaint it. One is that they both have the princess in it. Even though the painting is called” the maids of honor” the princess is in both of the paintings. Second they do both have a maid of honor, at least the left one. The maid of honor is touching the princess’s hand. The way the princess’s hair is done is the same in both paintings. she has a kinda of a flower oh her hair. The princess does stand out in both paintings, i noticed that Velazquez's painting had a brighter light on the princess then the others. And Piacco had the princess 3 times larger than the maid of honor. From both paintings we can tell that they were in a room. The second painting was by George W. Bellows and named Shoghead. This painting brought a sense of ease and relaxation. I can picture myself on the top of the mountain listening to the waves crash on the sides. The open countryside topped by the clouds give the painting a sense of realism. The extremely bright blue water stands out the most, though the focal point is not clear. There is not an excessive use of paint. It is as if Bellows caked it on his brush and made quick short strokes. The use of such dark colors on the hill is a mystery. The terrain has a roughness that makes the painting come to life. The artist did a great job of showing the depth. If I had to guess, he was influenced by Picasso’s work because of the extensive use of thick point.
The first difference between the two are the colors that were used. Van Gogh used bright blues and yellows to depict the night sky that stretches over the quaint town below. On the other hand, Kahlo used more neutral colors in hers. The sky in her painting is grey and stormy, giving the painting a melancholy feel, while van Gogh’s if full of swirling clouds and rather cheerful. The brush strokes in the paintings are vastly different as well. Van Gogh used thick, layered brushstrokes to give the painting an exaggerated, almost chaotic, feel. The painting technique that van Gogh used is called impasto, taking paint straight from the tube and onto the brush ("Van Gogh, The Starry Night"). This made his paintings more abstract while still keeping the subject obvious. You could always tell what he was painting, whether it was the night sky or his own face. On the other hand, Kahlo used a more realistic approach when painting, making her subjects clear and obvious. La Infanta Margarita and her two attendants draw the viewer’s attention, but the dark backdrop dominates the painting with its sheer vastness as it towers over the figures in this scene that are clustered at the bottom. The viewer of the painting is placed in the eyes of the king and queen, as they stand both inside and outside of the painting, reflected in the mirror as observers only. They can watch this scene as the royal couple watched their country crumble because of government debt and loss of territories. Diego Velázquez had always wanted to paint the truth, whether in the bodegón paintings of his earlier years or in the royal portraits he was commissioned during his career as the court painter. He did so in Las Meninas, during the final decade of his life, by depicting the condition of Spain’s government through an informal day-to-day scene of palace life.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
His work is mostly famous with his Cubism events. As he enters its twenty-fifth year, Picasso changed his style of painting. It breaks down and reproduces objects in simple geometric shapes. Cézanne, African tribal art and Iberian sculpture would be the inspiration the painter when it turned to Cubism. (Picasso, P. (1970) With the Demoiselles d 'Avignon that this new style explodes in 1907. That same year, he met Georges Braque with whom he develops the power of Cubism. The two work closely together. To address the problem of representing what exists in three dimensions on a two dimensional surface, Braque and Picasso bring a new answer. They replace the usual codes of color, volume and perspective through a system of geometric signs. They will add to it, in a subsequent phase (synthetic cubism), the use of pieces of various materials (sand, paper, metal, wood, fabric, cardboard ...) to avoid falling into abstract art. Jackson Pollack and Vincent van Gogh are some of most famous artist before and after their time. Each artist has a similar and different painting methods that they use when painting pictures. There most well-known paintings are called “Number 1” and “The Starry Night”. The paintings give off emotion by how they look, but each one is painted in different ways. The public did not find their paintings wanting when they were made. The difference was how long it took for them to get recognized for their work. Lastly, the paintings gave different and similar reactions to people that have changed over the years of their existence.

Cubism is a term that was derived from a reference made to geometric schemes and cubes. Cubism has been known as the first and the most influential of all movements in twentieth century art . Before Picasso did any cubism paintings, there were works exibititing a raw intensity and violence due to his reading of non western art aligned with European primitivism. This contrasting position provided the dynamic for Picasso’s work. In his paintings such as Mother and Child, Picasso showed the fetishistic and simplifying aspects of primitivism. In his paintings Picasso used bright hues and subdued grays and earth colors. Picasso found out that shapes could have meaning and identities by their arrangement .

The Lady has a white “V” neck shaped collar while the Mona Lisa has gold trim on her square shaped collar. Mona Lisa’s dress also looks a lot more flowy and lighter while the Lady’s dress seems more layered and thicker probably due to the colder weather in northern Europe. The Lady only has a dark blue canvas for a background while the Mona Lisa has a clearly defined landscape behind her with trees, water and a dirt road. The veil that the Lady wears is made from significantly thicker cloth and wears a dark colored headband. The Mona Lisa’s veil is barely visible. The Lady has a lighter hair color and is tied up in a bun with some kind of net or cap around it with silver pins tucked into it to keep her veil in place, while Mona Lisa has her dark, wavy hair draping down her shoulders in a casual yet elegant manner. We can see the ears on the Lady, but the Mona Lisa has her ears covered by her hair. The eyes of the Lady are bright and hazel colored. Mona Lisa’s eyes are dark and you can barely see her pupils in her irises. Maybe that is how Leonardo got the effect that her eyes seem to be moving.
