There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.

Even though a person feels uncomfortable becoming something they are not, there is the utmost respect because that leader displays an act of bravery, and gives others a chance for hope. A leader in the Lord of the Flies is responsible for the welfare of the boys. To ensure the well-being of everyone while they are on the island the leader must be able to make good decisions, listen to every member of the group, and maintain a clear mind despite the uncivilized environment. Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy are those whom are on the island and that are capable of doing all of. The qualities are essential to a good leader as without them, the little civilization remaining would be abolished. A good leader is someone who can think with a clear head while under pressure. He is someone who can unite people to a common cause. He should be able to be as good with logistics as he is in battle. He should be able to accept that there are others above him, and when assigned a task to do it faithfully. Finally, he should stay loyal to his cause even during hard or difficult times. Nathanael Greene was one of George Washington’s most trusted generals and close friend. He remained loyal to Washington throughout the entire war. When things started going bad for the colonists, Greene didn’t desert the cause. Instead he fought harder and continued to inspire his soldiers to stay strong. He accepted his position of power humbly, and when it was taken away from him he handled it gracefully (Golway). Nathanael Greene was a strong leader and a loyal friend during the American Revolution.
Anne Frank was a German-Jewish diarist. She was known for the diary she wrote while hiding from anti-Jewish persecution in Amsterdam during World War II. Her diary describes with wisdom and humor the two difficult years she spent in seclusion before her tragic death at the age of 15. Since it was first published in 1947, her diary has appeared in more than 50 languages. Perhaps more than any other figure, Anne Frank gave a human face to the victims of the Holocaust.
Is based on perception and how people perceive a leader and how well the person is able to communicate and inspire others will greatly affect how successful they can become. For example, a principal in a school has to have a certain amount of charisma, being able to communicate to the staff, parents, and student to about the vision of school. Character is important, in a study the US army has over twenty-three character traits that define what a leader is. Character as defined By the Merriam-Webster dictionary is this, “the way someone thinks, feels, and behaves : someone's personality.” In leadership it is paramount that a leader has the introspective and the wisdom to understand what is happening with themselves.
When I think of someone who is a great leader I automatically think about current and previous managers I have had over the years, and honestly I cannot say that any of them are the definition of a great leader. So after I looked up many different definitions of a leader all of them basically defined a leader in the same way, someone who leads people. So, a leader does not typically have to be a manager it could be a teacher or a parent. That is when I realize that a great leader has always been right in front of me teaching me great values, and that is my mother.
