In summarizing an active-positive politician, Barber suggests an “active-positive president wants to achieve results,” while an active-negative president “[aims] to get and keep power.” Based on the actions of the candidates in the media, as well as their respective policy platforms and past career actions, I suggest that Hillary Clinton represents an active-positive politician, whereas Trump represents an active-negative politician.
Hillary Clinton’s constant activity during her decades in the political realm proves that she is an active politician. As the First Lady, she expanded the role of her office. Rather than picking up a small or uncontroversial issue, she advocated for issues that were both controversial and central to Bill Clinton’s policy agenda such as health care reform and women’s rights. In the Senate, she worked with both parties to pass important legislation to help New York City recover both immediately after 9/11 and years after the tragedy. As Secretary of State, Clinton visited 112 countries, the most

of any Secretary of State. These accomplishments show that Clinton hasn’t ever sat idle for long during her life in public service. Though in her convention speech Clinton admitted that “the service part has always come easier to me than the public part,” Clinton still appears to enjoy politics. While she does not come across as well on TV like politicians such as her husband or Obama, when she spoke of her experience in politics during her convention speech, she seemed to speak from a place of happiness. She seems to have enjoyed the opportunity to fight for disabled children during her time at the Children’s Defense Fund, as well as for families in her later career, thus making her a positive politician. Clinton’s overall activity during her tenure as a politician and positive nature toward public service makes her an active-positive politician. As mentioned above, an aspect of an active-positive politician is a desire for results. Clinton’s policy platforms suggest that she desires results. Although she did decide to include some less plausible policy items in her policy agenda, such as free public college, for the most part, Hillary Clinton’s platform is relatively mainline and somewhat moderate. Furthermore, her willingness to make allies across the aisle while in the Senate (particularly with the more religious conservatives) proves that she dedicates herself to accomplishing tasks, even if she needs to compromise. Barber also says such politicians see themselves “as developing over time toward relatively well defined personal goals.” Hillary Clinton demonstrates this quality as for most of her career her main policy goals, the well-being of children, improved health care, and women’s rights, have remained consistent as she has worked up to higher and higher offices. Based upon these facts, I suggest Hillary Clinton is an active-positive candidate. Analyzing Donald Trumps’ situation is much more difficult as he has not been a politician, but rather a business person.
Based solely on his business career, Trump would likely be an active politician. He has built a fairly successful enterprise, but an incredibly successful personal marketing strategy. Trump has 33 building projects licensed under his name, as well as seven Trump golf courses. His name has become analogous to success. However, based upon his interactions with the press, he might take a more passive role. Rather than discussing policies that Congress could potentially pass, Trump tends to declare nonsense that isn’t likely to come to pass, such as “I’m going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.” Even more tellingly, Trump prefers to insult those who ask him about his policy agenda instead of actually answering with feasible policy items. If this continues in the White House, nothing would ever get
done. Again, whether Trump will feel positively or negatively towards being a politician is not clear. Trump’s interactions with the media do little to clarify this. His campaign contends that only he can “Make America Great Again.” This may suggest he feels as if running for office is just something he has to do at this point in his career. Alternatively, his convention speech repeatedly suggests that Trump is the only one who can save America. This insinuates that Trump decided to run for president not because he wanted to, but because he had to. However, he also suggests that everything he did, does, or will do is “great,” thus he definitely feels positively toward his past successes, and potentially his future successes. Overall, Trump is best described by either the passive-positive or active-negative descriptors. Barber describes a passive-positive candidate as someone with “low self-esteem… and a superficial optimism.” Trump does not seem to have a low self-esteem at all, though his optimism that he can fix America does seem superficial and short-sighted. He fits better as an active-negative politician. Barber’s description of the active-negative politician sounds more like Trump. Trump seems “ambitious, striving upward, power-seeking” in most of his policies, business past, and interactions. Furthermore, as demonstrated by his various flippant tweets and insults during speeches, “he has a persistent problem in managing his aggressive feelings.” For these reasons it seems Trump will be an active-negative president should he win the election and take office in January of next year.
Stephen Skowronek writes about political time and how one can determine the legacy a president will leave behind at the time their presidency is done. The president has immense powers when he comes to office, but the challenges they each face vary depending on the time they take office. Skowronek analyzes and demonstrates that the most essential factor for a president to attempt to legitimize his actions and orders will be the actions of the president before him. Following the actions of George W. Bush is how we can determine where Barack Obama falls under and follow the chain to the next president. If Hillary Clinton were to win the 2016 election, she would fall under the politics of articulation and Barack Obama would fall under the politics of pre-emption.
The U.S. president is a person deemed to be the most fitting person to lead this country through thick and thin. It’s been such a successful method that it has led to 43 individual men being put in charge of running this country. However, this doesn’t mean that each one has been good or hasn’t had an issue they couldn’t resolve when in office. But no matter what, each one has left a very unique imprint on the history and evolution of this nation. However when two are compared against one another, some rather surprising similarities may be found. Even better, is what happens when two presidents are compared and they are from the same political party but separated by a large numbers of years between them. In doing this, not only do we see the difference between the two but the interesting evolution of political idea in one party.
James David Barber simplifies his theory by dividing character into four different group patterns. He tries to support his theory and convince people that one person can be subjected to one group. A person who is considered active-positive is a person who has a high self esteem, values productivity, and is constantly working towards their own personal goals. An active-positive person is also considered well adapted (Barber 12). Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and John Fitzgerald Kennedy, were all - according to Barber, considered to be active-positive people (McGuire). An active-negative character puts excessive effort into their work but does not receive or feel their own emotional reward. They are rarely satisfied with the work they have done. They are also said to have compulsive and perferctionistic personalities (Barber 12). Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Abraham Lincoln, and Lyndon Baines Johnson were judged to be active-negative. William Taft, and Warren Harding, labeled as receptive, compliant, affection seeking, agreeable, and easily manipulated people. In Barber terms they are considered to be passive-positive (McGuire and Barber 12). The final group, called passive-negative, consists of people who are not enthusiastic about politics, have a low self-esteem, do not have much experience, are vague, but feel that they have a certain civic duty. The best example of a person who was passive-negative would be America's first president, George Washington; he did not necessarily want to be the president, or at least not the first president of America.
To summarize this analysis, Hillary Clinton shows us how as we unite, the stronger our bond is. She uses clever ways to show this action. Though she did not win this presidential election, she is still loved by many. She helped herself because of the way she wrote and persuaded people to join her. Using rhetorical appeals
On August 17, 1998, exactly one year after making the statement above, President Bill Clinton prepared to deliver a speech concerning a scandal that had gripped the nation for months. It is needless to say that this was an important moment during the Clinton administration. After accusations of sexual harassment, Clinton addressed the nation and admitted to having a relationship with Monica Lewinsky. In this critical speech Clinton set out to admit to wrong-doings, provide a few reasons for his action, and ultimately persuade the audience into moving on and forgetting the scandal. This essay will break down his speech into sections and examine the most and least effective strategies that Clinton employed and how well he executed those strategies. This is an interesting speech given under rare circumstances. Not since Watergate had an American president been under such harsh moral criticism from the public. By looking critically at this speech we are able to gain valuable insight into Clinton's motives.
Condoleeza Rice has been a member on the boards of directors for the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Chevron Corporation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Board of Governors. She also has invested time working on various political books, such as “Germany Unified and Europe Transformed,” “The Gorbachev Era,” and “Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army.”
The first lady appears to be trustworthy, in that she holds true to her contract of marriage although her husband has made and abomination of the sacred agreement. The marriage now, however, may actually be more political, but Mrs. Clinton makes it seem that she is not giving up on the marriage, a strong virtue especially in today's society. Mrs. Clinton is also a great liberal and advocates for many minority groups such as homosexuals. This appearance, whether it be true or false, appeals to the greater number of her constituents who are increasingly liberal.
The president has a significant amount of power; however, this power is not unlimited, as it is kept in check by both the judicial and legislative branches. The president is held responsible for passing legislation that will improve the lives of everyday Americans, even though he shares his legislative powers with Congress. The sharing of power acts as an impediment to the president’s ability to pass legislation quickly and in the form it was originally conceived. However, Americans do not take this into account when judging a president, as they fully expect him to fulfill all of the promises he makes during his campaign. By making promises to pass monumental legislation once elected without mentioning that Congress stands as an obstacle that must be hurdled first, the president creates unrealistic expectations of what he can fulfill during his time in office (Jenkins-Smith, Silva, and Waterman, 2005). A president is expected to have the characteristics that will allow him to efficiently and effectively lead the nation and to accomplish the goals he set during his campaign (Jenkins-Smith et al., 2005). There have been a handful of presidents that have been immortalized as the ideal person to lead the United States and if a president does not live up to these lofty expectations the American public will inevitably be disappointed. Since every president is expected to accomplish great things during his presidency, he is forced to created and project a favorable image through unrealistic promises. The combination of preconceived ideas of the perfect president and the various promises made by presidential candidates during their campaign create unrealistic expectations of the president by the American public.
The goal of Hillary’s speech is to persuade her audience that her ideas are valid, by using ethos, pathos, and logos. Hillary is the First Lady and Senator, she shows credibility as an influential activist for woman rights. “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton 2).
On September 5, 1995 Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered a speech to the United Nations 4th World Conference during a Women Plenary Session, located in Beijing, China. Clinton spoke about how women around the world were not treated equally, how women rights should be equal to human rights, and the ghastly abuse and discrimination women faced around the world. The reason for the conference was to strengthen women, families, and societies in order to empower women to taking control of their lives and not be subject to such discrimination. She emphasized how education, health care, jobs, and political rights were not equal between genders and that the world needed to change. Clinton gave a very convincing speech because of her use of rhetorical techniques. The use of pathos, ethos, logos, and anaphora created a powerful, persuasive argument against the way women were treated around the world. Clintons main goal of this speech was to appeal to the audience and convince them that this is unequal treatment is an immense matter and needs to be addressed all over the world.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is a well-recognized woman in the United States. Her great contribution as Secretary of State impacted people’s lives. One of many remarkable speeches Clinton gave was the “The Women Rights Speech” on the 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session, where she used strong words and emotions to appeal the audience. Even though the speech talked about women rights, she wanted everyone including men and children to listen and take action. Her use of ethos, logos and pathos throughout the speech helped people understand women live in a world where they suffer discrimination, and she proposes solutions to solve the issue.
Richard E. Neustadt, the author of Presidential Power, addresses the politics of leadership and how the citizens of the United States rate the performance of the president's term. We measure his leadership by saying that he is either "weak or "strong" and Neustadt argues that we have the right to do so, because his office has become the focal point of politics and policy in our political system. Neustadt brings to light three main points: how we measure the president, his strategy of presidential influence, and how to study them both. Today we deal with the President himself and his influence on government action. The president now includes about 2000 men and women, the president is only one of them, but his performance can not be measured without focusing on himself.
In 1989, President George H. W. Bush named her U.S. Ambassador to where she witnessed the country’s transition to democracy. She later served as U.S. Delegate to several International Conferences and Summits on treaties and human environment. Some of the skills that she possessed have been critical to her success which includes negotiating skills, studying international event and problem areas, and most importantly, teamwork (Biography.com). Some people believe her values are “a result of having lived through the depression” (Harris 673). She has seen the worst and hopes to make things better for her people. As a child, Clinton was “earning merit badges in girl scouts and starring in the girls softball league” (Harris 674). She has always believed women were smart and strong. Earning badges and playing sports might not seem like much, but it taught a young Clinton that women can do anything they set their mind to. Clinton went off to college and met her husband Bill Clinton there. As the couple got older, Bill decided he wanted to run for president. Hillary “went to Indiana to coordinate the campaign” (Harris 678) for Bill. From the start to the end of Bill’s presidency, Hillary was “extremely active in government affairs” (Hurley 204). She “[emphasized] the need for a global feminist agenda” (Hurley 204-205). Even though Bill was the president, Hillary applied herself as if she were the president. She encouraged equality for genders. Her speech “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights” was given right in the middle of Bill’s presidency. She used her economic power to create awareness of the gender inequality in the
Many Americans are beginning to wonder who will run as the Democratic candidate for the next president of the United States. Since the 2008 election, one particular name has been the topic of conversation around most media outlets and households across the county. With over one million supporters who believe in her abilities to lead, Hillary Clinton possesses the qualities that meet the leadership criteria that would help her to become the leader of the free world. I choose to research Hillary Clinton because I admire the drive and passion she puts into her work. She is a unique global leader whose activism has promoted social change around the world.
