The play The Crucible by Arthur Miller is about a girl named abigail who lives in the puritan times in salem Massachusetts. The people then were not like today, everything was about god and the church. Anything can be thought of as sinning or as witchcraft by the towns people, dancing being one of them. Abigail and her friends were caught by her uncle, Reverend Parris, in the forest dancing around a fire with paris’ servant Tituba, whom was from Barbados, while singing a song in her native language. Abigail to protect herself from punishment of witchcraft blamed the incident on tituba and said that tituba was working for the devil. That was the only beginning of Abigail's lies. and did not have much remorse for others and their well-being. She used to work for a woman named elizabeth proctor and her husband john proctor. Abigail and john had relations behind elizabeth's back, but elizabeth was not a fool. She had an idea that they were messing around so instead of making a big fuss of it, she let go of abigail instead. Abigail then moved to her uncle's home which his name was reverend parris. He was the pastor of the church so therefore he was a very important person. One day Abigail and her friends went out to the woods with Reverend Parris` slave,tituba. Reverend parris was out looking for the girls when he wondered to the woods and saw the girl singing and dancing around a fire. All of which were considered wrong and the act of witchcraft. One girl, the youngest was named Betty Parris. She was out with the girls but something very strange happened to her. She went into a state where she was not able to talk or move, she just lay there in silence. Because abigail was scared and thought she would be blamed for what happened to her and for using witchcraft she began to put the blame on everyone else, starting with tituba because she was the easiest to blame due to her nationality and her native tongue. But it did not stop there she accused practically the whole town. The lies stretched all the way back to elizabeth proctor only because of Abigail's personal vendetta, Abigail wanted to be with John proctor so bad she threw his wife under the bus so she would be imprisoned or hung. John did not want to be involved in the whole dilema until Elizabeth was brought into it. He,although he was afraid to ruin his good name, went to the court that was prosecuting the people being accused and told the judges about the affair he had with her. John did this in order for the people to realize that Abigail is not as innocent as she claims to be. Abigail being herself started to say that John too was working with the devil and making him say the things he was. John was taken into jail to wait for sentencing and his wife as well. John being the prideful man he is would not give the court what they wanted, which was a confession saying he was working for the devil. He knew he was an innocent man which is why he would not confess because that would ruin his family's name. Abigail and one of her friends were becoming afraid that the people would soon catch on to her so she stole reverend parris` savings and left on a ship. The next morning john and his wife were sentenced to be hung for witchcraft. The crucible is a dark tale full of lies and deceit, because of the fear that was living in the people of salem they began to turn on one another so they themselves would not be tried as a witch. The people were very suspicious and ignorant which cause lots of hysteria in the town. Nobody was safe from the madness going around the town.

In the Town of Salem Massachusetts, 1692, a group of adolescents are caught dancing in the forest. Among the adolescents in The Crucible, Abigail Williams and Mary Warren. The girls are horrified that they have been caught dancing, a sinful act, therefore they devise a story to evade punishment: they claim to have been bewitched. The first person who they accuse of witchcraft is a the black maid, Tituba. This results in her jail sentence as well as fearful suspicion throughout the town. Arthur Miller demonstrates the impact of lying as the girls recognise and manipulate their power in the town. Lead by Abigail, they go further, claiming countless others guilty and dooming them to exile. Miller demonstrates that there power is so great that even when Mary attempts to stand against her friends, she is quickly overwhelmed and once again plays along with their trickery. As the girls’ conspiracy continues, controversy arise over their truthfulness; people choose sides often lying themselves to support their side, further altering the lives of all involved.

The Crucible Throughout reading the crucible I found myself being extremely biased towards what I thought about certain characters, especially Abigail. Having a rotten sister whose name is Abbey, whom of which is never up to any kind of good, made it quite easy for me to see that from the get go Abigail wouldn’t be any saint either. Most of Abigail’s antics resembled the same that I see of my sister at home, aside from the affairs with an older man of course, which I think helped me out a bunch with the story and realizing who was in the wrong and who was not. A lot of the time I felt as if I could see right through Abigail.
