Have you ever stopped for a while and think about your past? Do you remember your childhood or some parts of it? If so, do you remember going to the doctor and being scared and fully aware, that it was that time of year for your annually check-up? Yeah, you probably do remember that it was also time for you to get your vaccinations. Maybe you remember your doctor or your parents telling you it was for your own good to be vaccinated or you will get sick. Then maybe, you became upset afterwards you have had your shot and wonder do I really need these vaccinations. Why is it so important, and who invented this concept of vaccinating people? Frist of all, many do no not know what a vaccination is and it is an injection of a weakened microbe in a person, which helps a person’s immune system become immune to the virus and helps prevent the disease. An English physician Edward Jenner first developed vaccinations in 1796. Some of the reasons Jenner invented the vaccination was there was a disease called smallpox that caused an outbreak in the Europe and killed millions of people. “Jenner took a few drops of the fluid seeping from a pustule of a woman who was infected with cowpox, and injected it into a healthy young boy. Six weeks later, Jenner injected the boy with fluid from a smallpox pustule, and the boy did not develop smallpox ” (Lutwick, Larry I., et al.). This is when vaccinations were born and now there are over 20 different types of vaccinations all over the world helping people built immunization for various disease. Many parents have been refusing to vaccinate their children over the past century. The parents have various reasons why they do not want to vaccinate their children. Some of the reasons are, their religion has something to do with the way they view vaccination, or sometimes it against their beliefs or they are unable to do it. In between the years, 1905 to 2016 there has been several cases in where there have had courts cases of parents who have not keep up to date with children vaccination or they were refusing to vaccinate their children. One of the case described in the article, “Parental Refusal of Childhood Vaccines and Medical Neglect” by Parasidis, Efthimios and Douglas J. Opel, the case took place in the District of Columbia in the Columbia court of appeal in 2013. In case of Columbia, a mother was incapacitate, has several health issue, and would have a health care aid to help her throughout the day. Since, she was a immobilize mother, she had a very difficult time accommodating her children needs, since most of the time she was heavily medicated. The woman had a 5-year child and a 13-year-old child and she would often have her child late to school and would as well fail to keep her child’s immunization up-to-date.
