Clive Davis of Aritsa Records discovered Houston while she was performing at a nightclub. He signed her immediately. She sang the song "Home" from the musical The Wiz. Over the next two years she and Davis worked on her debut album. Both of them wanted the best producers and songwriters possible to showcase her amazing talent. The Whitney Houston debut album was “Whitney Houston”. The album became an instant pop sensation. Throughout the next year, the singles "Saving All My Love for You" and "How Will I Know" helped the album reach the top of the charts. The album stayed at the top of the chart for 14 weeks. In 1986 Houston won a Grammy for "Saving All My Love for You". Dionne Warwick, Houston's cousin was the one to present the award, which made the award even more special. Houston continued to be successful with her second album "Whitney", which was released in 1987. Just like the first album, "Whitney" went platinum. She also won a Grammy for the single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," and went on a successful world tour. Eventually Houston in addition to a successful music career, she decided to pursue acting. In 1992 she starred opposite Kevin Costner in the movie The Bodyguard. She set a trend for her films to follow. For each movie she also released hit single. These singles generated sensational record sales for the soundtracks. Her smash single from The Bodyguard was a cover of Dolly Parton's 1974 "I Will Always Love You,". This single proved to be Houston's biggest hit ever, spending a record-breaking 14 weeks atop the U.S. charts. The soundtrack album went on to win Houston three Grammys, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Later in the 1990s, Houston starred in both Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife, each accompanied by hit soundtracks as well. Whitney Houston's death was caused by accidental drowning.
