White Americans or being seen as White in general is not only a racial identity, but also is associated with a certain privilege. As mentioned previously, whites certainly hold a position of power in the social world. Whites work in positions of privilege and power, and therefore are seen or visible in society. While, people of colour are invisible and with that invisibility privilege and power is lost along the way. Richard Dyer believes that white people create dominant image of the world, and construct the world in their own image. He then goes on to says that White power nonetheless reproduces itself because it is not seen as Whiteness, but as normal (Seidman, 2013, 237). It is obvious throughout history that white rules and interests rise above the interests of any other racial group, and being able to associate yourself with the title of being white automatically brings a sense of privilege or some sort of benefit to ones life. Historically, race has been taught or understood by particularly focusing on people of colour, or more specifically Blacks. The theory of Whiteness however, only arose around the 1980s and 1990s (Seidman, 2013, 234). Brought forth by this theory are similar ideas and theories seen throughout history, however with Whiteness Studies it is seen in a different approach. The aim of Whiteness studies is to expose the social origin of Whiteness and to challenge its privileged status, and the approach is structured by not only the lives of Whites, but also non-Whites (Seidman, 2013, 237). When observing the different arguments and approaches by both Dyer and Roediger and comparing it to other Critical Race Theories, it is clear that there are many similarities, however there are also some

Skin color is something that you carry with you your whole life. It cannot be changed and it will most likely be used against you or in your benefit at some point in your life. Tim Wise’s book White Like Me provides a picture of what it is like to be white in America. A main topic covered in White Like Me is white privilege. On pages 24 and 25 Wise illustrates what white privilege is and shares his opinion regarding how to address white privilege in society today. Wise’s plan for addressing white privilege is one not of guilt, but of responsibility, a difference Wise highlights. The concept of feeling guilty for white privilege lacks reason because white privilege is something built up through generations and its existence is not of any one person’s fault.
According to “The White Racial Frame”, the author Joe R. Feagin states that to “framing” is “the idea of a perspectival frame that gets imbedded in individual minds (brains) as well as in collective memories and histories, and helps people make sense out of everyday situations.” (Feagin). Feagin discusses upon how most of whites believe they are greater to those of color. El Teatro Campesino serves as a great way to break down the rationalizations of the white supremacy by demonstrating how Chican@s and Latin@s rose up as a community.
Race-thinking: what is it? Isn’t the world past the issue of race? Do races even exist and if so, what does it mean to have a racial identity? Is colorblindness possible and how important is it? These are the questions Paul Taylor addresses in the book “Race: A Philosophical Introduction”. Paul Taylor is a self-proclaimed “radical constructionist” who will maintain that race is very real in our world and in the United States as a whole (p. 80). Taylor takes care to ensure he addresses the real needs concerning racial dynamics in the U.S., referencing historical events, prevailing policy affairs, and even pop culture to explain that everyone capable of forming opinions ought to have some sort of grasp of the concept of race-thinking. As Taylor will analyze, race and race-thinking “has shaped and continues to shape private interactions as well as the largest political choices” (p. 8). In other words, race-thinking encompasses everything we do and every interaction we have. In this paper I will attempt to interpret and expound Taylor’s views and definitions of race, concepts associated with race, and input my own interpretations as they are appropriate.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) began in the field of law and has been used as a theoretical framework in educational research for over 15 years (Savas, 2014). Gloria-Ladson-Bilings and William F.Tate IV’s wrote an article, “Toward a Critical Race Theory of Education”, in 1995 and began the use of Critical Race Theory as a lens for future studies in education. The first tenet of CRT looks at race and racism through historical contexts. To explore this tenet, I will take a brief glance back to the beginning of our country and the beginning of white as a superior race.
As a European immigrant in the USA, I have encountered many new cultural phenomena in the last 4 _ years that have challenged me to perceive who I am differently. This experience has been even more polarized by the fact that I have lived most of that time in Los Angeles, a melting pot to be reckoned with. Coming to America, I expected these adaptations to my Irish self but the intensity of becoming cognizant of my label of 'whiteness' has mocked the limitations of my anticipations.
The article being analyzed is called “The Intersections of Race, Class and Gender in the Anti-Racist Discourse" by George Dei. The purpose of the article is to outline the idea that race cannot be analysed by itself, rather it has to be separated and looked at in connection to other types of identities. The author argues that the current theory about race does not provide a concise understanding of “human and social development”. The ideas surrounding race that already exist do not consider the “totality of human experiences”. This is where the author argues that the study of anti-racism is "integrative". This mentality derived from the idea of profits. This was evident when white workers decided to call Africans/Native Americans as “colored” and how much wage they should received. Race was one of the ways to maximize profits through the recognition of cheap labor and the value of blacks/Native Americans to society. By putting labels of ‘colored’ or ‘freeman’, it prolonged the notion of ‘whiteness’ through acknowledgement of who has independence and freedom vs. who did not have it. The focus was not on labor alone because it also focused on property and enforcement of power to white folks and the powerlessness to the ‘others’.
Race has been a difficult topic to discuss and grasp ever since race problems began. Not only is it a sensitive topic that carries a lot of baggage to the name, but it is a continuous problem that we still today, after many years, battle with. “The Code Switch Podcast, Episode 1: Can we talk about Whiteness?” is a podcast with many speakers of different colors that discusses white ignorance and white uncertainty of talking about racial issues.
Many white Americans are living with the fear that they didn't really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain in importance only when are different importance given to certain differences, so it creates privileges. People who are privileged in one society are often not aware of their privilege. It is very easy to be oblivious to the privilege. The problem of discrimination is very complex and there is no unique formula that would solve it. There are general patterns in a white supremacist culture, that all white people have privilege, whether or not they are racist themselves.
In society, race clearly affects one’s life chances. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience for progression. The social construction of race is based on privileges and availability of resources. Looking at society and the formation of race in a historical context, whites have always held some sort of delusional belief of a “white-skin privilege.” This advantage grants whites an advantage in society whether one desires it or not. This notion is often commonly referred to as reality.
To completely understand white privilege you first need to understand what white privilege is. White privilege is defined as a set of advantages and/or immunities that white people benefit from on a daily basis beyond those common to all others. White privilege can exist without white people 's conscious knowledge of its presence and it helps to maintain the racial hierarchy in this country.(mtholyoke.edu) There are many examples of white privilege. They range from people’s thoughts to people 's court cases, to actions. Basically to sum that up you have more privileges and fewer assumptions get made because you 're white. These privileges are not a conscious bias and do not make the person a racist.
